1.Histochemical studies on Clonorchis sinensis The distribution of carbonic anhydrase.
Jung Kyun CHU ; Sung Moon HONG
The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1963;1(1):11-13
The authors carried out histochemical studies on Clonorchis sinensis, especially, histochemical demonstration of carbonic anhydrase activity. Kurada's method was applied for the histochemicl staining in this study. The result obtained were summerized as follows : Carbonic anhydrase activity was intensely positive in oral sucker cells, reticular tissue cells, epithelium of the intestine and testes, more or less intensely positive in vitelline gland cells and yolk of eggs as well.

Korean Circulation Journal 1998;28(8):1414-1419
A twenty four-year-old female patient had suffered progressive dyspnea for 6 years until death. She denied any symptoms suggestive of connective tissue disease, or deep vein thrombosis. She suffered an episode of pontine infarct in 1995. Four years after diagnosis of primary pulmonary hypertension, she died of sudden death during hospitalization. Gross features of pulmonary arteries at autopsy were as follows: left main pulmonary artery showed dilation of the lumen and thickening of the wall, and right main pulmonary artery was markedly dilated and contained fresh thrombus. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of lung tissue showed plexiform lesions of pulmonary arteries, complete luminal obliteration of pulmonary arterioles and dilated lesion of pulmonary arterioles, and capillaries. This patient represents a typical case with a primary pulmonary arteriopathy with plexiform lesions with thrombotic lesion, demonstrating the importance of thrombosis in situ in the pathogenesis of primary pulmonary hypertension. To our knowledge, this is the first autopsy report on the primary pulmonary hypertension in Korea.

7.The Effect of Lens on the Contractability of Ciliary Muscle.
Seong Heon MOON ; Changwon KEE
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1998;39(12):2959-2963
There are many factors affecting the outflow facility. Structural changes of aqueous outflow channel by ciliary muscle contraction play major role in the control of outflow facility. Although many studies on the physiology of outflow facility have been done by many authors, the lens effect on the ciliary muscle contractability has not been reported. We performed clear corneal phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens implantation in 42 cataract patients and measured intraocular pressure(IOP) pre and postoperatively by Goldmann applanation tonometer and determined outflow facility with and without 2% pilocarpine before and after cataract surgery, respectively. We analysed IOP changes after surgery, and assessed ciliary muscle contractability by analysing outflow facility changes. Statistical analysis was done by Wilcoxon`s signed rank test. IOP decreased by 2.4+/-0.4mmHg(mean+/-SEM)(P<0.001): outflow facility with and without pilocarpine increased by 0.080+/-0.012microliter/min/mmHg(P<0.001) and 0.045+/-0.006microliter/min/mmHg(P<0.01), respectively after lens extraction: outflow facility increased 2.8+/-0.4 times by pilocarpine itself after lens extraction(P<0.001). The lens connected to the ciliary muscle muscle by zonnule may have an influence on ciliary muscle contractability.

9.Expression of beta Defensins in the Human Middle Ear Mucosa.
Korean Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery 2004;47(2):103-107
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It is believed that the innate immunity plays a critical role in protecting the tubotympanum from being infected because the middle ear cavity is normally sterile despite of a paucity of immune cells. Among known antibacterial molecules, defensins have been shown to contribute significantly to innate immunity. However, it is still unclear whether or not beta defensins are expressed in human middle ear mucosa. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Immunolabeling and RT-PCR were performed with the mucosal specimen from normal subjects and otitis media patients, respectively. Expression of beta defensin 2 mRNA was compared between the control group and experimental group that was treated by inflammatory stimuli in the animal models using RT-PCR. RESULTS: beta defensin 1 was expressed in both normal and inflamed middle ear mucosa of human, but beta defensin 2 and 3 were found only in the inflamed mucosa. The expression of beta defensin 2 mRNA was up-regulated when the interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was treated in the middle ear mucosa of the experimental animals. CONCLUSION: We could show that beta defensins are expressed in the human middle ear mucosa and that beta defensin 2 is up-regulated by the inflammatory stimuli, IL-1alpha or LPS.
