Defect of the radius should be managed with either fusion of radius and ulna forming “one-bone forearm”, or restoration of its continuity by bone graft. Reported hereia are two cases in which the radius developed defect following sequestrectomy and treatment of open infected fructure respectively. Reconstruction of the radius was tried with bone graft; utilizing the ulnar end resected from the same side in one case and fibula in other. Both Sowed sound bony union of the graft about four months postoperatively.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster(HZ), caused by reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus, is manifested by dermatomal distribution of skin rashes, acute pain and post-herpetic neuralgia by pathologic involvement of the sensory ganglia. Low-energy laser(LEL) deliver a small amount of energy without elevation of the tissue temperature. LEL is reported to have various biologic effects such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, regenerative, antiallergic, immunocorrective, and antibacterial effects. OBJECTIVE: We attempted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of LEL on an acute phase of HZ. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with acute HZ were enrolled in the study. The control group(30 patients) received medications including analgesics, antihistamine, and topical care without LEL irradiation. The experimental group(30 patients) were irradiated with LEL daily for 7 days in addition to the same kinds of medications for the control group. The efficacy of LEL irradiation for HZ was assessed by analyzing changes in skin rashes, pain scores, and postherpetic neuralgia.

The closed reduction has made an important contribution to the treatment of children under the age of 24 months. The authors report a clinical experience of 20 patients(21 hips) with congenital dislocation of hip who were treated by closed reduction at the department of Orthopaedic Surgery of Chonnam University Hospital. There were total 230 patients(237 hips) disgnosed as having congenital dislocated hip for 10 years from 1978 to 1987 and 20 patients of them were included in this study. The follow-up period ranged from 1 year to 10 years with an average 3 years. The results are as follows: l. All but one were girls, comprising 19 (20 hips) of 20 patients. 2. The age at closed reduction were under 6 months in 2, 7 to 12 months in 4, 13 to 18 months in 10 and 19 to 24 months in 4. 3. Of the 21 hips treated by closed reduction, 17 hips achieved a satisfactory result(81%). The other four hips had redislocation(2 hips) and subluxation(2 hips). 4. PURPOSE: It has been reported that exposure of the testes to elevated temperatures results in decreased spermatogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of temperature change on the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP 70) during spermatogenesis in rat testes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven Sprague-Dawley rats (200-230g) were randomly divided into control, hot bath and hot bath followed by cold bath, groups. The hot bath consisted of immersion in a 41-43 degrees C water bath for 10 minutes, and the cold bath consisted of immersion in a 18-20 degrees C water bath for 3 minutes. Each bathing was performed twice a day, three times a week, for a total of four weeks. Hematoxylin & Eosin staining was performed to evaluate the degree of spermatogenesis, and Western blot & immunohistochemistry were performed to investigate the expression of HSP 70 in the rat testes. RESULTS: From the histological tests, the spermatogenesis was severely impaired in hot bath group, but preserved in hot bath followed by cold bath group. The expression of HSP 70 in the hot bath group increased 1.5 times compared to that in the control group (p=0.075). However, the hot followed by cold bath group showed similar findings to those in the controls (p=0.934). Immunohistochemical analysis for the expression of HSP 70 demonstrated significant elevations in the hot bath group, and HSP 70 immunoreactivity was found in the Leydig cells and fibroblasts in all three groups, but the levels of expression of the HSP 70 in the control, and the hot followed by cold bath, groups were similar. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study demonstrate an elevation in the expression of the HSP 70 only occurred in the hot bath group, which suggests the induction of a coping mechanism for exposure to high temperature. As the levels of expression of the HSP 70 in the control, and hot followed by cold bath, groups were comparable, is suggestive of the levels of HSP 70 being consistent with those seen with normal spermatogenesis.

We report a case of 17-year-old female with juvenile onset systemic lupus erythematosus Who developed symptomatic unilateral sacroiliitis. She had neither HLA-DR3 nir B27 antigens. Though sacroiliitis have been reported in mail SLE patient. it has been rarely reported in female patients. The rare coexistence of SLE and sacroiliitis. described in this case. may not be determined soley by genetic factors; sacroiliitis may be just an infrequent manifestation of SLE.

Study of dentofacial structure relationships relative to TMJ internal derangement is required to increase the predictability of TMJ internal derangement. But few studies have been reported. The purpose of this study is to reveal any correlation of dentofacial characteristics with TMJ internal derangement by lateral cephalometric analysis. Patients were devided into two groups. (1) Symptomatic patients with TMJ internal derangement (2) Asymptomatic volunteers with no TMJ internal derangement. Twenty symptomatic patients with TMJ internal derangement(7male, 13female) were selected from our clinic and had undergone a standarized clinical examination, panorama, transcranical view, TMJ tomography. Twenty asymptomatic volunteers(9male, 11female) were selected from our clinic with no pain, no limitation of motion. All subjects had undergone lateral cephalometric analysis. The results were obtained as follows. 1. No significant difference between ID and normal group is detected in cranial base. 2. Maxilla position of ID group is located more posterioly than normal group. 3. Mandible position of ID group is located more posteriorly than normal group and facial profile is hyperdivergent. 4. Posterior facial height of ID group is less than normal group thus facial profile is hyperdivergent. The patients, as mentioned, have a high prevalance of ID thus it should be careful in TMJ ID diagnosis and treatment.
