We compared the clinical and radiographic outcomes between femoral varus osteotomy (23 hips) and Salter innominate osteotomy (18 hips) for treatment of Catteral is groups III and IV Perthes disease after 3-12 years follow-up. There were no statistically significant differences in the clinical outcomes using the lowa hip rating score and leg length discrepancy and in the final radiographic outcomes using the femoral head sphericity and Stulberg type between the two groups. However, neckshaft angle and center-edge angle were closer to normal value in the Salter innominate osteotomy group compared with the femoral varus osteotomy group. When the patients underwent femoral varus osteotomy at the older age (7 years), articulotrochanteric distance ratio and neck-shaft angle were significantly less than those of other patients. Salter innominate osteotomy may be better indi- cated as compared to femoral varus osteotomy, when physeal damage of proximal femur is obvious or highly suspicious particularly in the older children (7 years) with severe Perthes disease.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the direct and indirect composite restorations which had been placed for 1 year. METHODS: The composite restorations which had been placed between 1999. Mar and 1999, Dec was evaluated after 1 year. For direct restorations, Spectrum (Dentsply, USA) and Z100 (3M, USA) were used in the anterior teeth and Surefil (Dentsply, USA) were used. For class V restorations of anterior and posterior teeth, Spectrum was used. For indirect restorations, Targis/Vectris system (Vivadent/Ivoclar, Liechtenstein) was used. 2 examiners evaluated marginal quality, proximal contact, discoloration, presence of 2nd caries, loss of filling and hypersensitivity of restorations. The restorations was clinically evaluated by modified methods based on USPHS. RESULTS: 60 teeth were evaluated. 59 were clinically acceptable and 1 restoration which was placed in class v cavity in the posterior tooth was fallen out. In most cases, the restorations were clinically acceptable. For restorations which had been directly placed in the class II cavities, loose proximal contact was indicated as the main complaints. CONCLUSIONS: Most of Anterior and posterior restorations which bad been directly or indirectly placed for 1 year were clinically acceptable. For posterior teeth, loose proximal contact was indicated as the main problem in the directly placed Class II restorations. Long term clinical study is needed.

The primary culture of human nasal epithelial cells was performed using the inferior nasal turbinate tissues, and infected with Hantaan virus to examine the hypothesis of airborne transmission of Hantaan virus in humans. The primary culture cells were identified as epithelial cells by morphologic and immunologic analyses. The viral antigens were detected in the primary human nasal epithelial cells infected with Hantaan virus by immunofluorescence staining. The ICAM-1 induction by Hantaan virus or IFN-gammawas examined in the primary human nasal epithelial cells and human lung fibroblasts (WI-38). Hantaan virus induced the surface ICAM-1 in Wl-38 cells in a time-dependent manner, and IFN-gammainduced the surface ICAM-1 in a dose-dependent manner in HNEC and WI-38 cells. These results revealed that the human nasal epithelial cells are susceptible to Hantaan viral infection supporting the hypothesis of airborne transmission of Hantaan virus in humans. The human lung fibroblasts also might have an important role in the pathogenesis of Hantaan virus through the induction of ICAM-1.

In situ hybridization was performed in ten cases of condyloma acuminata in order to study the applicability of digoxigenin-11 dUTP(Dig-dUTP) labelled probe compared with radioactive isotope labelled probes. Although signal intensity was denser in radiolabelled probes, high positive rates were obtained with Dig-dUTP labelled probes. From these results, Dig-dUTP labelling is found to be more efficient in typing of human papillomavirus DNA than radiolabelling.

There have been reported cases that the Krukenberg Tumor had been primary ovarian carcinoma. But the Krukenberg Tumor is generally known as one special type of metastatic ovarian carcinoma, which histologically consists of nest of mucin filled signet-ring cells in a cellular, nonneoplastic stroma. The most common gastrointestinal tract origin for Krukenberg tumor is the stomach, and the next frequent is the large intestine. Generally the Krukenberg tumor is difficult to diagnose and treat until somewhat enlarging its size. We experienced a case of the Krukenberg tumor on the remained ovary after the previous unilateral adnexectomy, which was metastasized from adenocarcinoma of stomach. We present this case with a brief review of literature.

BACKGROUND: It is traditiqnally considered that the non-bullous fonn of impetigo is primarily of streptococcal origin and the bullous form is of staphylococcal origin. However, recent reports have shown that Staphylococcus aureus (SA) has become the predominant cauative pathogen of non-bullous impetigo as well as of bullous impetigo. Objective. Our purpose was to evaluate the predominant causativi. pathogen, and to establish a therapeutic guideline for impetigo. METHOD: We described the characteristics of lesions and gerformed bacterial culture and susceptibility tests in patients with impetigo. Patients were treatecl by one of three frequently used antibiotics(erythromycin, cefuroxime, fusidic acid). RESULTS: Of 77 patients, there were 47 cases of crusted type(61.9%), 18 cases of mixed type with crusted and bullous lesiona(23.3%), 7 cases of mixed type with crusted and pustular lesions(9.1%) and 5 cases of bullous type(6.6%). SA was grown from 90.1% af the cases, in 83.1% of cases it was the only organism to be foind and no gowth of streptococcus was faund even in mixed infections. An antimicrobial susceptibility test of 63 strains of SA demonstrated high susceptibility to vancomycin(98.4%), cefuroxime(97.1%), oxacillin(96.4%), cephalothin(95.2%), fusidic acid(91.7%) etc, and high resistance to penicillin(93.7%), gentamicin(90.5%), tobramycin(88.9%) and erythromicin(80.9%). Of 19 patients treated with erythrornycin, 12(63.1% ) showed treatment failure at a weeks, while no treatment failure occured in groups treated with cefuroxime and usidic acid. There were statistically significant differences iri therapeutic effect between cefuroxirne and erythromycin(P=0.005 by two tailedy test), and betweer fusidic acid and erythromycin(P=0.0040. But there was no significant difference between cefuroxime and fusidic acid. CONCLUSION: The predominant pathogen of non-bullous impetigo a well as bullous impetigo was SA which were highly resistant to erythromycin and highly sensitive to efuroxime and fusidic acid. In the clinical response, cefuroxinie and fusidic acid treatment were most effective and erythromycin was inadequate for treatment of impetigo.
