The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2005;43(4):141-147
A practical and convenient method of rearing Eucyclops serrulatus in a microculture environment is described. A complete life cycle of E. serrulatus was maintained in a narrow space on a microscope slide glass on which a cover glass of 22 x 40 mm in size was mounted at a height of 0.8 mm. The culture medium was constituted by bottled mineral water boiled with grains of Glycine max (soybean). Chilomonas paramecium, a free-living protozoan organism, was provided as live food. Growth of nauplii hatched from eggs to the first stage of copepodite took an average of 7.7 days, and the growth of copepodite 1 to the egg-bearing adult female took an average of 20.1 days in the microculture cell with an average life time of 44.7 days. Continuous passage of copepods was successfully maintained as long as sufficient medium and food were provided. The microculture method enables an in situ microscopic observation on the growth and developmental process of helminth larvae experimentally infected to copepods as well as of copepod itself. Furthermore, it does not require anesthetization and, therefore, minimize the amount of stress exposed to copepods during the handling process.

Korean Circulation Journal 1990;20(1):11-18
One hundred seven consecutive patients aged 3 years to 34 years with simple ventricular septal defect were prospectively investigated with 2-dimensional Doppler echocardiography to assess the echocardiographic criteriae in defining the anatomic site of the VSD. The anatomy was confirmed in all patients at operation. Two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography correctly categorized the site and extension of VSDs in 104 of 107(97%). All doubly committed subarterial VSDs were correctly diagnosed as an area of discontinuity beneath the pulmonary valve in the parasternal short-axis plane taken at the aortic root level. Forty eight of 49 perimembranous VSDs with infundibular extension showed an area of discontinuity beneath the right aortic cusp in the parasternal long axis plane of the left ventricle. Of 17 perimembranous VSDs with trabecular extension, 16 had an area of discontinuity around the medial papillary muscle in the short axis plane taken at the level of high left ventricular outflow tract(LVOT). All 5 perimembranous VSDs with inlet extension showed an area of discontinuity adjacent to the septal leaflet attachment in the short axis plane taken at the level of high LVOT. One muscular trabecular VSD was categorized correctly by the short axis view and the apical 4-chamber view. Thus, these 2-dimensional Doppler echocardiographic criteriae are a simple and reliable in identifying the anatomic site of VSDs.

The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery 2000;33(7):601-604
Actinomycosis is an indolent, suppurative infection caused by an anaerobic gram-positive organism (usually actinomyces israelii) which usually causes infection in the face, mediastitum, lung, and abdomen. Primary esophageal actinomycosis which is not related with pulmonary or mediastinal actinomycosis, is very rare, especially in immunocompetent host. A 58-year-old woman has been suffered from dysphagia, odynophagia, and chest pain after insertion of esophageal stent in esophageal acid stricture. She underwent a esophagectomy with esophagogastrostomy for above mentioned symptoms. Pathologic diagnosis was a esophageal actinomycosis.

7.Effects of Psychiatric Nurses' Perception of the Healthcare Accreditation System and Safety Climate on Patient Safety Management Activities.
Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 2016;25(4):375-385
PURPOSE: This study was done to provide a basis for effective patient safety management activities and quality improvement by identifying the relationship among psychiatric nurses' perception of the healthcare accreditation system, safety climate and patient safety management activities. METHODS: The study participants included 163 psychiatric nurses from 8 mental hospitals and data was collected using self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 using mean, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: Main factors which affect patient safety management activities are education and organizational structure for accreditation, and the total career record. The explanatory power for patient safety management activities of these variables was 41%. CONCLUSION: Findings indicate that psychiatric institutions have to develop their own effective measures, work out plans to support administrative and financial nursing services, and continuously provide useful information and educational opportunities.

8.Comparison of Gender Factors Affecting Middle School Students' Smartphone Addiction.
Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing 2015;24(3):145-155
PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study was done to compare factors influencing smartphone addiction in middle school boys and girls. METHODS: Participants were 390 middle school students (boys 198, girls 192) who were living in Seoul. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program. RESULTS: Factors influencing smartphone addiction for boys were stress, the motivation to use smartphone as a tool of ostentation and fashion, depression, self-control, and teacher control over the use of smartphone. Factors influencing smartphone addiction for girls were stress, the motivation to use smartphone as a tool of ostentation and fashion. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that it is necessary to consider gender characteristics in order to develop effective management programs for smartphone addiction in middle school students.

9.Actor and Partner Effects of Health Status, Marital Satisfaction and Self Efficacy on Retirement Preparation of Middle Aged Couples: Actor-Partner Interdependence Model Analysis.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2018;48(2):154-166
PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify the actor and partner effects of health status, marital satisfaction, and self efficacy on retirement preparation in middle aged couples using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model. METHODS: Participants were 121 middle aged couples living in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Daegu City, Korea. All measures were self-administered. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 20.0. RESULTS: 1) Wife's self efficacy and marital satisfaction showed direct actor and partner effects on retirement preparation in middle aged couples. Wife's health status showed an indirect actor effect through wife's self efficacy and marital satisfaction on wife's retirement preparation, and showed an indirect partner effect through husband's self efficacy on husband's retirement preparation. 2) Husband's self efficacy and marital satisfaction showed only direct actor effect on retirement preparation. Health status among the husbands showed an indirect actor effect on husband's retirement preparation through their self efficacy and marital satisfaction, and an indirect partner effect through wife's marital satisfaction on wife's retirement preparation. 3) The actor effect size of health status on self efficacy and marital satisfaction was larger among husband's than wife's. Additionally, the partner effect size of health status on self efficacy and marital satisfaction was different between the two groups; however, the actor and partner effect size of self efficacy and marital satisfaction on retirement preparation was the same for husband and wife. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that nursing intervention strategies for improving self efficacy and marital satisfaction are strongly needed to enhance retirement preparation of middle aged couples in Korean community.

10.Effects of Weight-Bearing Exercise on Bone Metabolism in College Women.
Ju Sung KIM ; Myung Hee KIM ; Jae Shin SHIN
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2004;34(5):760-770
PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the effects of weight-bearing exercise(WBE) on bone metabolism. METHOD: WBE was performed for 12 weeks by healthy college women. Bone-related parameters were measured four times during this period by evaluating the immunoradiometric assay and enzyme immunoassay. Bone mineral densities(BMDs) were measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry before and after the WBE program. Data was analyzed using t-test, paired t-test, x2-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. RESULT: Osteocalcin, a bone formation marker, increased more in the experimental group than in the control group based on the interaction between time and group(F=3.29 p=.024). Little difference between the two groups was found for the other parameters: urinary deoxypyridinoline, insulin-like growth factorI, parathormone, serum calcium, and serum phosphorus without showing any time interaction between the groups. The femoral trochanter BMD rose in the experimental group while that of the control group fell, showing a significant difference for BMD(t=3.06 p=.005). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups for changes in BMD of the forearm, lumbar spine, femoral neck, and femoral ward's triangle. CONCLUSION: These findings supported the WBE is beneficial for increasing bone formation in college women and long-term application is needed to substantiate the effects of WBE as a intervention in promotion of bone-health.
