A histopathological study was carried out on the duodenum of mice and rats experimentally infected by F. seoulensis. Each mouse was infected wit 500 metacercariae and killed after 1, 2, 3 days, 1 and 2 weeks from infection. Each rat was given 1,000 metacercariae and was examined after 1, 2, and 4 weeks from infection. The duodenal tissue sections of mice and rats were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and PAS stained for the rats of 1 week group. The pathological findings are summarized as below. There were no differences in mucosal findings between the mice and the rats, adn between the location of duodenum, 1 and 5 cm distal to the pylorus. Each worm embraced a villus exclusively with its foliate forebody which was inserted into the intervillous spaces. The fluke pinched villous epithelia using its oral and ventral suckers. The tribocytic organ destroyed the villous epithelia deeply up to the stroma after 3 days from infection. Apparent villous changes were observed in the mice after 3 days from infection. Villous changes were shortening, widening, blunting or fusion. The villous stroma showed edema, microscopic hemorrhage, capillary congestion, dilatation of lymphatics and inflammatory cell infiltration. The cells were lymphocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils and giant cells. Rarely submucosal and transmural inflammation was encountered.

Unilateral peripheral vestibular deficit can occur from a different etiology including viral infection, trauma, ear surgery or idiopathic. Patients with sudden unilateral vestibular deficit usually complain of whirling vertigo, postural imbalance and ipsilesional lateropulsion, which gradually recover over a few weeks by vestibular compensation mechanism. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy has been accepted as helpful exercise based training program with strong evidence for acceleration of vestibular compensation in unilateral vestibular deficit. Here the authors described the current issue regarding vestibular rehabilitation in unilateral vestibular hypofunction from the informative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Since 2005, the commercial patch test panel, the TRUE-test, has been available. However, there have been no reports regarding the results of the TRUE-test compared with previously used Korean Standard Series in Korea. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of the contact allergy, causative allergens, and source of allergens in patients who were diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis, and to compare the findings with previously used Korean Standard Series. METHODS: We reviewed the results of the TRUE-test from 2005~2010 in Wonju Christian Hospital. We patch-tested 843 patients who were diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis. The patch test reading was performed on day 2 and days 3 or 4, according to the patients' needs. Epidemiologic findings of patients and the results of the patch tests were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 843 patch-tested cases were compiled and analyzed. Of 843 patch-tested patients (male, 309; female, 534), 65.8% had at least 1 positive reaction and 30.2% at least 2 positive reactions. The highest age distribution was the 5th decade in females. The face, with the exception of the eyelids, ears, and lips, was the most frequently affected site (comprising 50.3%). The highest sensitization rates were found with nickel (29.1%), thiomersal (10.9%), and cobalt dichloride (9.7%). The lowest positivity included caine mix (0.7%), mercaptobenzothiazole (1.2%), and quinolone mix (1.2%). Metal allergens displayed higher positive rates than any other standard allergens. The overall prevalence was similar with a recent report in Korea. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in the overall prevalence of the most sensitized allergen compared with the reports about previously used Korean standard series.

This study was carried out to confirm the infection source of the human case of Fibricola seoulensis, and to reveal out a part of its life cycle in Korea. Also the morphological characteristics of the metacercaria were described. The results were summarized as follows: Rana nigromaculata and Natrix tigrina lateralis were found to be infected naturally by the metacercariae(diplostomula) of F. seoulensis. The metacercarial capsule was round to elliptical in tissue of the intermediate hosts with a long diameter 0.232 - 0.385 mm. Liberated metacercariae were ovoid with small conical posterior body. Body length measured 0.199 - 0.312 mm and width 0.153 - 0.252 mm. The infection rate of R. nigromaculata by the metacercariae ranged from 87% to 100% by area, and the number of the larvae ranged from 3 to 390 by frog. The metacercariae were found in skeletal muscle of frogs, from head to hindlegs. All examined N. t. lateralis were found to be infected by the metacercariae with the range of numbers frome 3 to 35,918. The larvae were collected from all viscera and body segments except for the head of the snakes. However, a great majority of the metacercariae were collected from the stomach. Hematoxylin-eosin stained preparations of frog skeletal muscle and snakes stomach revealed that the metacercariae had no cyst wall of worm origin, but encapsulated by the host tissue. Some of them were found in dilated lymphatic vessels. The larval infection was associated with slight or severe inflammatory reaction even with granuloma formation. By above results, it was concluded that the frog, Rana nigromaculata, was the second intermediate host, and the snake Natrix tigrina lateralis was a paratenic host of F. seoulensis in nature in Korea.
