Tumor angiogenesis has been found to have prognostic significance in many tumor types for predicting an increased risk of metastasis. We assessed tumor vascularity in 28 cases of borderline malignancy and 71 cases of carcinoma of the ovary which had been resected and diagnosed, using the highly specific endothelial cell marker CD34. The numbers of microvessels were counted in 200 magnification in three highly vascularised areas. The numbers of microvessels in carcinomas were higher than that in the borderline malignancy of serous and mucinous tumors. The number of microvessels of mucinous carcinomas was significantly higher than that of serous carcinomas. There were neither significant differences in the number of microvessels according to histological tumor types (p=0.075) nor significant differences in the number of microvessels according to FIGO stages (p=0.072). But in serous carcinomas, the number of microvessels was higher in the FIGO III-IV stage than in the FIGO I-II stage (p=0.017). This study showed higher neovascularization in malignant tumor than borderline malignancy, and in the advanced stage (FIGO III-IV) than less advanced stage (FIGO I-II) of serous carcinomas.

Allergic contact dermatitis from aroma oils has long been recognized and with increasing frequency. Contact dermatitis of the allergic type of fragrances used for aromatherapy has been reported rarely, and only in patients exposed due to their occupation. We report herein a case of allergic contact dermatitis to aroma oils in an aroma therapist. A 25-year-old woman, an aroma therapist, had been treated with topical steroids under the impression of contact dermatitis. She had had pruritic erythematous maculopapules on the arms extending to the hands for the previous 6 months. Patch tests showed strong reactions to aroma oils(3% fennel and 3% juniper). The skin lesions were cleared after she stopped her job. However, re-exposure to aroma oils caused eczematous lesions repeatedly at the sites previously involved. We predict that increasing popularity of aromatherapy will lead to increasing number of patients developing allergic contact dermatitis from aroma oils. This has to be taken into consideration when testing patients with suspected contact dermatitis.

Cutaneous pseudolymphoma (CPL) has a microscopic appearance that resembles that of cutaneous lymphoma, but shows a clinically benign course. The differential diagnosis of CPL with cutaneous lymphoma is very important because clinical outcomes of them are quite different. We herein describe two cases of B-cell pseudolymphoma, which were difficult to differentiate from cutaneous B-cell lymphlma. All of two cases, Polymerase chain reaction of immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement showed polyclonal pattern.

Therapeutic irradiation can induce angiosarcoma. Radiation-induced angiosarcoma constitutes 20% of all angiosarcomas. Although its common site of origin is the skin and subcutaneous tissue, it rarely arises in small or large bowels with a presentation as multifocal abdominal angiosarcomatosis. We report a case of intra-abdominal angiosarcomatosis involving the jejunum, ileum, transverse colon, mesentery and right ovary in a 63-year-old female. It developed 10 years after therapeutic irradiation for squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix. She developed panperitonitis due to intestinal perforation. She died from sepsis 3 days after segmental resection of the small bowel and right oophorectomy. We reviewed the previously reported cases and describe the clinicopathologic features of this tumor.

We report a case of actinic granuloma in a 39 year-old woman who was presented with multiple anetoderma on non-sun exposed skin such as the neck, upper arms, elbows and calfs. The anetodermic presentation of actinic granuloma has never been reported and the common pathogenesis involving reduction of elastic fibers link the two disorders. Anetoderma secondary due to actinic granuloma should to be included in the list of secondary anetoderma and may suggest one of the possible pathogenesis of anetoderma.

PURPOSE: To report a case of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy accompanied by carotid artery plaque in a patient with retrobulbar optic neuritis. CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old man visited our clinic complaining of headache, decreasing visual acuity and defect of inferior visual field in his left eye for 3 days. The best corrected visual acuity was 1.0 in the right eye and 0.1 in the left eye. The anterior segment state, intraocular pressure, fundus examination and optical coherence tomography were normal in both eyes. Relative afferent pupillary defect, color vision deficiency and total scotoma were observed in his left eye. The results of the laboratory test and brain magnetic resonance imaging were normal. He was discharged from the hospital after 3 days of systemic steroid treatment on the basis of retrobulbar optic neuritis. A week later, fluorescent angiography and carotid ultrasonography were performed because of his history memory loss and left upper limb weakness before admission. A focal filling defect of the peripapillary area was found on fluorescent angiography. A plaque with a thickness of 1.9 mm and a length of 1.4 cm was found on carotid ultrasonography. After 6 months, the best corrected visual acuity was 0.4 in the left eye and the visual field showed a partially improved defect. CONCLUSIONS: Fluorescent angiography is recommended for potential posterior ischemic optic neuropathy in patients with retrobulbar optic neuritis, even though it is rare. Carotid ultrasonography is useful in finding atherosclerosis to prevent stroke or cardiovascular disease if ischemic cause is suspected on fluorescent angiography.

PURPOSE: We report a case of meningioma diagnosed as ischemic optic neuropathy. CASE SUMMARY: A 45-year-old women presented with decreased visual acuity in her left eye without eye movement pain. Her best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in that eye was 0.3. She showed a relative afferent pupillary defect, abnormal color vision test, and inferior visual field defect in her left eye. The optic disc showed slight blurring superiorly and pallor temporally. Fluorescein angiography showed choroidal filling defect, and ischemic optic neuropathy was suspected. The carotid artery sonography showed normal results. The BCVA of the left eye was 0.5 after 7 months. The visual field test and color vision test were improved after 7 months. The optic disc was pale. The magnetic resonance imaging was performed because of persistent headache, and that showed a suprasellar mass that was removed by surgical resection and diagnosed as meningioma on biopsy. CONCLUSIONS: The possibility of compressive optic neuropathy should be considered in presumed ischemic optic neuropathy if the patient complains of persistent headache.
