It is a rare occurrence that cervical cancer and aplastic anemia are combined, but eight cases were reported since Fujiu's report in 1968. There has been no one who have reported the case of like this in Korea. And so, we report this case for the support of idea of treatment in aplastic anemia patient combined with cervical cancer. The knowledges required are early detection of malignancy and the individualization of the treatment according to the status of the patient, the bone marrow function saving procedure and the prevention of the patient from death involved with bleeding and sepsis induced by infection.

BACKGROUND: The placenta from a pregnancy that is complicated by intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) tends to be smaller than that from a normal pregnancy. To investigate this difference, we analyzed the telomerase activity, the proliferative activity and the mRNA levels of apoptosis mediators in placentas. METHODS: In 20 placentas from normal third-trimester pregnancies and 22 placentas form pregnancies that were complicated by IUGR, the telomerase activity was detected by a telomeric repeat amplification protocol assay. The proliferative activity was assessed by immunohistochemical staining using the MIB-1 monoclonal antibody. The expression of the apoptosis mediator was evaluated by semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reactions for fas and fas ligand. RESULTS: Telomerase activity was detected in 2 (10%) of 20 normal placentas, whereas it was not observed in all tested 13 placentas that were associated with IUGR. The proliferative activity was significantly low in the placentas that were associated with IUGR (7.44+/-2.96%), compared with the normal placentas (11.0+/-3.48%, p=0.002). There was no statistically significant difference in the mRNA levels of fas or fas ligand between two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Low telomerase and proliferative activities in the placenta may play a role in the pathogenesis of IUGR.

Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1980;21(3):247-250
Timolol malate, a potent beta-adrenergic antagonist, reduced intraocular pressure. The use of timolol malate ophthalmic solution was reduced intraocular pressure without pupillary alteration, alteration of anterior chamber and fluctuating myopia and hyperemia compaired with other reducing agents. We compair the effects of timolol maleate ophthalmic solution with pilocarpine and epinephirine solution in the view of the changes in intraocular pressure. We divided 30 white rabbits randomly into 3 groups, group 1 was 0.5% timolol malate, group 2 was 2% pilocarpine, and group 3 was 0.5% epinephrine. Each solution was instilled one drop on right eyes daily. and cheeked intraocular pressure after 15 minitues, 1 hour, 3 hours, 8 hours and 24 hours for 1 week duration. We evaluated the statistical significance of all changes according to the T-test and P-value. The results of observation as follow; In group I, the mean intraocular pressures was reduced 1 hour, 3 hours, 8 hours after instillation and the effect lasted 24 hours after dropping(p<0.05). In group 2, the similar result as group 1, but lasting effect was shorter than group 1 (p<0.05). In group 3, the mean intr.a.ocular pressure was reduced 8 hours after instillation (p<0.05). And compair with group 1 and group 2 we no statistical significance (p>0.05).

Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease 2001;11(3):233-239
PURPOSE: To evaluate the valuability of dipstick IgE detection method as a screening test for allergic diseases, we compared the results of dipstick test to that of RAST and skin prick test. METHODS: Twenty children who visited to pediatric allergy clinic in Soon Chun Hyang University were enrolled to comparative study of dipstick IgE detection method to Skin prick test and RAST. Dipstick IgE detection method was performed by using AllergodipR(Allergopharma Joachim Ganzer KG). We compared the sensitivity and specificity of dipstick IgE detection method to RASt and skin prick test. RESULTS: The sensitivity and specificity of AllergodipR for inhalant allergen(D.pteronyssinus) to RAST were 100%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of AllergodipR for inhalant allergen(D. pteronyssinus) to skin prick test were 77.8% and 90.9%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of AllergodipR for food allergen to RAST were 0% and 100%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of AllergodipR for inhalant allergen(D. pteronyssinus) to skin prick test were 0% and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSION: The dipstick method(AllergodipR) can be used as a screening test for detection of specific IgE to inhalant allergen.

Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease 1999;9(1):56-64
PURPOSE: Cough variant asthma may be defined as a presentation of asthma that fulfills all the criteria of asthma, inflammatory process of the airways and airway hyperresponsiveness. Because of the cough is only the manifestation in cough variant asthma especially in children, it may be very difficult to assess by the physical examination and routine spirometry. Airway function may be further evaluated by bronchial provocation, usually with methacholine or exercise, to supprot or exclude the diagnosis of asthma. In children too young to perform pulmonary function tests, a therapeutic trial can serve as a diagnostic tool. In this study we evaluate the effectiveness of inhaled bronchodilator and corticosteroid treatment to the children with cough variant asthma. METHODS: Forth-eight children who visited to our pediatric allergy clinic having a chronic cough more than 3 weeks were enrolled to our study. We defined a children who showed bronchial hyperresponsiveness after exercise challenge as a cough variant asthma. We analyzed the changes of PEFR before and after exercise and treatment for 4 weeks. RESULTS: 1) All the patients with cough variant asthma or sinobronchitis have a night aggravating cough as a sole manifestation. 2) The baseline % predicted PEFR showed within normal range in the study subjects. But there was significant decrease of % perdicted PEFR after execise challenge in the patients with cough variant asthma. 3) There was significant increase of % predicted PEFR after treatment with inhaled bronchodilator and corticosteroid in the patients with cough vatiant asthma. Also it is noted in the patients with sinobronchitis treated with antibiotics. CONCLUSION: We can find significant improvement of clinical manifestation and pulmonary function in the patients with cough variant asthma who treated with inhaled bronchodilator and corticosteoid. Because of many children suffering from chronic cough may have a cough variant asthma, we emphasized that inhaled bron-chodilator and corticosteroid treatment is effective for long-term control of cough variant asthma.

Korean Journal of Orthodontics 1999;29(4):425-434
Dr. Youn-Sic Chun and coworkers invented the new machine for getting information about the relative effectiveness of the orthodontic appliances and we named it Calorific machine. The author and colleagues used this machine to compare with tooth moving mechanism by 3 types of the insertion method of precision-TPA for derotating the posterior teeth. We measured the distance of tooth movement and found out the rotational center on the occlusal X-ray film and the tooth movement on the occlusogram and then processed paired t-test by SAS program. The results were as follow : 1. In the intermolar width, the mesial insertion method showed the loss of distance, and the other methods(-distal insertion method, mesial expansion method-) showed the increase of distance. 2. In the arch length, the distal insertion method was exhibited as most recommandable way for increasing the arch length. 3. The rotation center of the mesial insertion method for derotating the molar, was located between mesial pit and central pit of the lower 2nd molar. and, in the distal insertion method, it was located between distal pit and distolingual cusp, and in the mesial expansion method was located at distal pit.
