Subsepsis allergica's main characteristics are high intermittent fever, irregular recurring exanthemata of different types, neutrophil leukocytosis, increased sedimentation rate, negative culture, no demonstrable cause and good prognosis. This disease usually oecurs in children under age of fifteen. We had opportunity to observe a case in 30 year-old fernale presenting most of the above mentioned charactristics and presumably belonging to this disease entity. Other fever producing diseases were excluded by clinical featuree, serologic tests and skin biopsy. It was treated by antibiotics and salicylate without effect, but it responded to corticosteroid.

In management of foot deformity, the operative procedures such as tendon transplantation and bone stabilization are of the relatively recent origin. The first tendon transfer was performed by Nicoladoni in 1881. Since that original report, a voluminous literature was appeared on the subject of tendon trasplantation. During the period, from Jan. 1960 to May. 1992, we have done clinical studies of the 189 feet on 167 patients who had been undergone tendon transfer. The results are as followes, 1. Residual poliomyelitis, leprosy, cerebral palsy and club foot are common etiology. Among them, residual poliomyelitis was the most common, especially in 1960 to 1969. Recently trauma and aged leprosy were increased. 2. Among 189 feet, the equinovaurs deformities were 90 cases. 3. Posterior tibial tendon, peroneus tendons, anterior tibial tendon, Achilles tendon and extensor hallucis tendon were transferred. 4. Posterior tibial tendon was mostly used. 5. The evaluation for surgery, for Good to Excellent was 114 feet 60. 3% 6. The poor results were noticed in the cases of the calcaneal deformity and showed in the age below 5 years old.

PURPOSE: Nowadays pharmacologic provocation tests and physiologic tests are usually used to determine growth hormone(GH) deficiency in short stature. But this method has many problems. We know GH stimulates the release and synthesis of insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I) and measuring the level of IGF-I is relatively simple. So we measured plasma IGF-I to watch the correlation with the GH levels and to determine it may replace the complicated stimulation tests. METHODS: At the department of Pediatrics in Dong San Hospital from Dec. 1996 to Aug. 1998, childrens who visited for evaluation of short stature and measured GH and IGF-I simultaneously were reviewed. After clonidine and insulin administration, exercise and sleep, we measured their peak GH level and IGF-I level by the immunoradiometric assay(IRMA) kit. RESULTS: The ratio of boys and girls were 22 to 31 and the cases below 3 rd percentile were 26 which was the most. With phamacologic provocation test, there were 43 cases whose level of peak GH below 7 ng/mL(group I) but with combined phamacologic provocation and physiologic tests there were 27 cases of group I. The mean IGF-I level showed correlation with aging in both male and female(r=0.53, P<0.05). The relationship between peak GH and IGF-I level are found when we tested both phamacologic and physiologic combined tests. The mean IGF-I level did not correlate with height percentile. CONCLUSION: Measuring the IGF-I value was useful to detect GH deficient children but combined tests were more helpful.

Patients under age of 14 years usually does not require imaging because they are likely to have a benign abducens nerve palsy, unless they develop additional signs or symptoms of neurologic disease during observation. Here we report a case of an isolated abducens nerve palsy caused by overt hemorrhage from de novo formation of cavernous angioma in the pons. Cavernous angiomas of the brain stem should be considered as a possible cause of isolated abducens nerve palsy in young adult and MRI, including gradient-echo sequences should be performed.

Ginseng root, as a folk medicine, has been used in for eastern countries for thousands of years. Ginseng extract has been shown to have a variety of effects on the activity of the central nervous system, promoting simulation as well as inhibition of the cortical activity. A survey of the relevant literatures has indicated that the putative anxiolytic activity of red ginseng has not been scientifically investigated. Therefore, the present study was designed to assess anxiolytic effect of ginseng total saponinis(GTS). The putative anxiolytic effects of several fractions of GTS were investigated in mice using an elevated plus maze paradigm. Single dose administration of TS Fr.- I showed anxiolytic action in mice. Anxiolytic effect induced by TS Fr.-I was similar to that induced by diazepam. TS Fr.-II, TS Fr.-III and TS Fr.-IV did not show the anxiolytic action compared with that of TS Fr.-I. It was suggested that regulation of GABAergic neurotransmission may be important in the action of GTS. The Interaction of GTS fractions with benzodiazepine receptor was performed using rat cortical membranes. GTS inhibited the binding of [3H] Rp 15-1788 on the benzodiazepine receptor. Among from TS fractions, the binding activity of GTS in the TS Fr.-IV was highest, which did not show the anxiolytic activity. From these results, we conclude that GTS has anxiolytic action, and the is not related to benzodiazepine receptor binding activity.

Angiographic findings were analysed in 11 cases of Behcet'sdisease which was diagnosed clinically in Seoul national University Hospital from July 1982 to June 1983. Arterial involvement was noted in 5 cases and venous involvement in 6 cases respectively. Arterial aneurysm and occlusion were arteriographic findings. Arterial aneurysm was noted at large arteries in all 5 cases and multifocal involvement was noted in 4 cases. Characteristic finding of arterial involvement was protruding saccular aneurysm. Venous involvement was thrombotic occlusion of deep veins in iliac, femoral and tibial areas in all 6 cases. Behcet's disease should be differentiated whenever these arterial or venous angiographic findings are revealed in a young adult.

This 22-year-old female patient has had a lozenge shaped hair tuft with terminal hair on the lumbosacral area since birth. A limping gait due to discrepancy of the length of the lower extremities has also been noted since 5 year age. Subsequently multiple, recurrent trophic ulceration developed on the left foot because of sensory loss. Simple cervico-lumbar spine x-ray showed spina bifida occulta of L-2 to sacrum. Lumbar myelography revealed widened vertebral canal without other spinal anomaliea.

The authors studied psychoticism, using Derogatis's SCL-90, in the subjects of 3,499 male and 1,335 female college freshmen of Yeungnam University. The authors collected the reports of Self-Rating Psychoticism Scale during the periods from January to February, 1986, and applied ANOVA and t-test on psychoticism scores in order to compare them between various psychosocial factors, and sexes. The results are as follows: There was significant difference in the mean averages of total psychoticism scores between male and female students: male students scored 4.62+4.01, female students scored 5.03+3.89 (P<0.01). Thirteen male students (0.4%) showed high psychoticism scores of 20 or higher, while seven female students (0.5%) showed the same scores. The male students who have maturated in city and the female students whose educational fees were paid by self, showed higher level of psychoticism scores (P<0.05). The male and female students who believed Protestantism showed higher level of psychoticism scores (respectively P<0.05, P<0.01). There was a strong tendency toward higher psychoticism scores in the students who were dissatisfies with their home atmosphere, college, department and familiarity of parents and those who had pessimistic views of self in the past, present or future in both groups (P<0.001).
