In this animal study, comedones were induced by topical application of oleic acid onto the rabbit ear canal and the histopathologic and ultrastructural changes in response to topical application of HO and hexane extracts of red ginseng, and saponin were measured. No microscopical difference was observed between treatment groups. Nucle ir remnants were observed in the horny cell layer as well as the thinning of the granular cell layer. Scattered and decreased keratohyaline granules were also noted. Six weeks after initiation of treatment, we observed the thinning of epidermis and veappearance of granular cell layer with normal keratohyaline granules. After treatment, scanning electron microscopy showed a decrease in the size of comedones, and loosened and desquamating horny cells in the comedones. From the above results, it could be concluded that Panax ginseng extracts might have effects on the keratinization process of the skin.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between quality of life (QOL) and psycho-socio-spiritual characteristics in male patients with alcohol dependence. METHODS: The sample consisted of 109 men with alcohol dependence defined by DSM-IV criteria. We assessed QOL by the WHO QOL assessment instrument-BREF (WHOQOL) and SmithKline Beecham QOL (SBQOL). Sociodemographic and alcohol related data were collected, and 7 questionnaires were administered: MAST, BDI, STAI, Drinker Inventory of Consequences (DrInC), Scale of Social Support (SSS), Religious Beliefs and Behaviors (RBB) and Spiritual Well-being Scale (SWBS). The correlations between each QOL score and other variables were examined, and stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed. RESULTS: The WHOQOL score positively correlated with education level, SSS (support) and RBB and negatively correlated with MAST, DrInC, BDI, STAI (trait) and SSS (conflict) scores. In stepwise regression analysis, the scores on the STAI and BDI contributed to the score on the WHOQOL. The SBQOL score correlated with the income level, and negatively correlated with BDI and STAI score. STAI score was a weak predictor of SBQOL score. CONCLUSION: The significant predictors of QOL in patients with alcohol dependence were psychological factors such as anxiety and depression.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of guided tissue regeneration(GTR) technique using chitosan nanofiber membrane and to compare it to the clinical efficacy following GTR using PLA/PLGA(copolymer of polylactic acid and polylacticglycolic acid) membrane in mandibular class II furcation defects in human. The chitosan nanofiber membranes were applied to the mandibular class II furcation defects of 13 patients(test group) and PLA/PLGA membranes were applied to those of 11 patients(control group). Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession, plaque index and gingival index were measured at baseline and 3 months postoperatively. Vertical and horizontal furcation defect depth were measured at surgery. Both groups were statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon signed Ranks Test and Mann-Whitney Test using SPSS program. The results were as follows: 1. Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment loss and gingival index were significantly reduced at 3 months postoperatively compared to values of baseline in both groups(p<0.05). 2. Gingival recession and plaque index were not significantly decreased at 3 months postoperatively compared to values of baseline in both groups. 3. No significant difference between two groups could be detected with regard to changes of probing pocket depth, gingival recession, clinical attachment level, plaque index and gingival index at 3 months postoperatively. In conclusion, chitosan nanofiber membrane is effective in the treatment of human mandibular class II furcation defects and a longer period study is needed to fully evaluate the outcomes.

A 61-year-old woman with a left cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula presented with left 6th nerve palsy. Initial brain MRI showed findings consistent with left-sided pontine infarction. Follow-up MRIs revealed an enlarged pontine lesion, and additional lesions in the right hippocampus, both basal ganglia and centrum semiovale mimicking a brain tumor or a demyelinating disease. We suggest that the MRI lesions are venous congestions caused by the shunting of blood flow from the left carotid artery into the venous system. (J Korean Neurol Assoc 19(5):520~525, 2001)

Cubitus varus deformity following elbow fracture in children rarely limits the function of the upper extremity, but the patients and/or their parents often request an operation for the aesthetic purpose. Various surgicsl techniques have been proposed to correct the deformity, however, the complications following operation are still common. We critically reviewed 55 patients with cubitus varus deformity treated by supracondylar closing osteotomy at Seoul National University Hospital between January, 1980 and April, 1989, and report on 25 patients who had at least one year follow-up (average 4.0 years). The results were graded as excellent (13 cases), good (8 cases), and poor (4 cases). The average amount of correction was 29.1 degrees by humero-elbow-wrist angle. There were two cases with ulnar nerve palsy and one case with radial nerve palsy, however, all of which were spontaneously recovered with time. The factors related to poor results were age at operation, degree of deformity, improper wedge size, and nerve palsy. In this article, we also illustrate our new, simple and safe technique of supracondylar closing spring (incomplete) osteotomy based on careful preoperative planning and special attention to surgical details.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine, when measuring prostate volume by TRUS, whether height is more accurately determined by transaxial or midsagittal scanning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients who between March 1995 and March 1998 underwent both preoperative TRUS and radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer were included in this study. Using prolate ellipse volume calculation (height x length x width x pi/6), TRUS prostate volume was determined, and was compared with the measured volume of the specimen. RESULTS: Prostate volume measured by TRUS, regardless of whether height was determined transaxially or midsagittally, correlated closely with real specimen volume. When height was measured in one of these planes, a paired t test revealed no significant difference between TRUS prostate volume and real specimen volume (p = .411 and p = .740, respectively), nor were there significant differences between the findings of transaxial and midsagittal scanning (p = .570). A paired sample test, however, indicated that TRUS prostate volumes determined transaxially showed a higher correlation coefficient (0.833) and a lower standard deviation (9.04) than those determined midsagittally (0.714 and 11.48, respectively). CONCLUSION: Prostate volume measured by TRUS closely correlates with real prostate volume. Furthermore, we suggest that when measuring prostate volume in this way, height is more accurately determined by transaxial than by midsagittal scanning.
