Purpose: Sleep disturbance is among commonly reported symptoms associated with leukemia and its treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify the symptom experience, anxiety and depression, and sleep disturbance in patients with acute leukemia undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 82 patients with acute leukemia who were undergoing chemotherapy were recruited. Data were collected using a self-reported questionnaire, which included the M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory, the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Patient Activation Measure 13. Results: Sleep disturbance and symptom experience, and anxiety and depression were shown to be positively correlated, and patient activation was shown to be negatively correlated. Use of sleeping pills and symptom severity were significantly associated with sleep disturbance. Conclusion The psychological and physical symptoms patients experience during treatment should be accurately identified, and effective nursing interventions should be provided. In addition, patient activation in patients with acute leukemia under inpatient treatment was not correlated with symptoms. However, supportive care should be provided to develop and accurately measure patient activation tools suitable for disease characteristics to increase patient activation.

Background: To identify the differences in the vancomycin pharmacokinetics between multiple trauma patients and medically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) stratified by the use of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and the factors affecting vancomycin clearance (CLvan ). Materials and Methods: All the included patients received at least three consecutive doses of vancomycin, then, therapeutic drug monitoring was conducted. Patients' serum vancomycin trough levels and other clinical variables were identified retrospectively. The vancomycin pharmacokinetics and associated factors were compared and analyzed between trauma ICU (TICU) and medical ICU (MICU) patients. Results: In the non-dialyzed group, the CLvan was higher among the TICU patients than the MICU patients. However, in the continuous renal replacement therapy group, there was no significant difference in the CLvan between the multiple trauma and medically ill patients. The only factor associated with CLvan in the non-dialyzed group was creatinine clearance; none of the factors was associated with CLvan in the CRRT group. Conclusion In the case of non-dialyzed patients in the TICU, vancomycin dosages must be adjusted, depending on the patient's actual body weight changes. In the case of patients undergoing CRRT in both ICUs, vancomycin can be infused with fixed doses regardless of the patients' characteristics.

The combination of Müllerian agenesis with inguinal ovaries accompanied by primary ovarian insufficiency is extremely rare. A 21-year-old Korean woman was referred to our center with primary amenorrhea. The patient was diagnosed with Müllerian agenesis with inguinal ovaries. Her hormonal profile showed hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism suggesting primary ovarian insufficiency. We performed laparoscopic neovaginoplasty using modified Davydov's procedure and reposition inguinal ovaries in the pelvic cavity. Oral estrogen replacement was applied for the treatment of primary ovarian insufficiency. This is a rare case report on Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome accompanied not only by inguinal ovaries but also with primary ovarian insufficiency. We present our first experience on the laparoscopic neovaginoplasty performed on the patient with müllerian agenesis accompanied by inguinal ovaries and primary ovarian insufficiency.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify menstrual distress, coping method and relief of symptoms among female nurses who worked with 3-shift. METHODS: A total of 185 participants were recruited from November 18, 2011 to January 30, 2012. The measurement included menstrual distress and coping method questionnaire and relief of symptoms. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients with SPSS 19.0. RESULTS: The level of menstrual distress was moderate (mean 3.0), and there were significant differences in menstrual distress by age, education, stress, regularity of menstrual cycle. Among the coping methods, coping according to menstrual cycle specific was the most frequently used, followed by active recognizing coping, active behavioral coping, and avoidance coping. Among the degree of symptom relief, symptom relief score was the highest when used coping according to menstrual cycle specific. Menstrual distress was associated with stress, adequate amount of sleep, dysmenorrhea and number of coping method total. CONCLUSION: Nurses experienced moderate levels of menstrual distress and used various types of coping to relieve it. There is a need for hospital nurses to develop an effective nursing intervention to relieve the menstrual distress and utilize active coping methods.

Plasma carotenoid levels were compared among 64 healthy male subjects (control) and 38 patients of ischemic heart disease(IHD) and 20 ones of cerebral infarction(CI) all of whom were over 50years of age. Another 98 healthy male subjects aged 23 to 58 were selected to compare their plasma carotenoid levels by age groups, Levels of lutein, zeaxanthin and crpytoxanthin were lower in IHD(34+/-2, 13+/-1 and 62+/-7 microgram/dl)and CI(36+/-3, 12+/-2 and 41+/-6 microgram/dl)patient groups than in control group (84+/-5, 16+/-2 and 69+/-3 microgram/dl) while those of lycopene, alpha-and beta-carotene varied little among the three groups. The sum of the six carotenoid levels were levels were, therefore,highest(205+/-14 microgram/dl) in the control group followed by IHD(155+/-15 microgram/dl) and CI(128+/-17 microgram/dl) patient groups, Among the 98 healthy male subject for the age group study, levels of the three major carotenoids increased with age from the twenties to the fifities ; lutein, from 64+/-6 to 89+/-8 microgram/dl, cryptoxanthin, 57+/-8 to 73+/-4 microgram/dl and beta-carotene were more significantly correlated(r=0.30 to 0.61, p<0.01), whereas levels of lycopene and alpha-caroteme were significantly(r=0.21 - 0.23, p<0.05) correlated.

To enhance the quality as well as global competitiveness of clinical trial professionals (CTPs), a certification program of the human resource is needed. Accordingly, in Korea the first and the second certification examinations were implemented in February and October 2012, respectively. In this paper, introduction of the certification program of the human resource is described, and results of the certification examinations and questionnaire survey are presented. METHODS: Data including the examination results and questionnaire survey was collected by cooperative officials in Korea National Enterprise for Clinical Trials. Applicants who were selected eligible for examination by the steering committee were asked to complete questionnaires provided with the test papers on the day of the certification examination. RESULTS: In the first certification examination, a total of 221 eligible participants completed the examination. 99.5 % of the participants responded the questionnaire survey. In the second examination, a total of 223 applicants participated. The examination consisted of 50 multiple-choice questions with cut-off score of 70 per cent score.176 & 194 CTPs passed the first & second examinations respectively. CONCLUSION: This paper that described the results of the two certification tests and questionnaire surveys might be helpful in establishment and activation of the certification program in the future. Quality improvement of CTPs and international competitiveness of clinical trial in Korea can be anticipated by the certification program.
