1.Effect of Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling in Idiopathic Macular Holes Stage 3, 4.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2001;42(3):446-452
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the surgical results of internal limiting membrane peeling during pars plana vitrectomy for the treatment of idiopathic macular holes. METHODS: Ten patients(10 eyes) with idiopathic macular hole stage 3 or 4 underwent pars plana vitrectomy with peeling of the macular internal limiting membrane, and total fluid-gas exchange, and were positioned face-down for 2 weeks. RESULTS: Anatomic success was achieved in 10 eyes(100%), and visual improvement of 2 or more lines on Han Chun Suk visual acuity chart was achieved in 5 eyes(50%). Eyes with symptoms of less than 6 months showed better functional recovery than eyes with symptoms of more than 6 months. Transmission electron microscopic examination showed internal limiting membrane in the removed specimens. Complications attributed to the operation included nucleosclerosis, transient high intraocular pressure, and retinal pigment epithelial degeneration. CONCLUSIONS: Internal limiting membrane peeling may be a useful adjunct for the successful macular hole surgery.

The effects of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) on movement and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive (ir) neuronal changes in young (5~6 weeks) and aged (10~12 months) C57BL/6 mice were studied. Locomotor activity was measured during 180 minutes after a single injection of 30 mg/kg of MPTP. For immunohistochemistry both young and aged mice were injected four repeated dosages of 10 mg/kg of MPTP 12 hours apart. We counted the numbers of TH-ir cell bodies using immunohistochemical technique in substantia nigra (SN), ventral tegmental area (VTA) and locus ceruleus (LC) 7 days after the last injection of MPTP. There was a marked decrease of locomotor activity in MPTP-treated young and aged mice, and a delay in recovery of locomotor activity in MPTP-treated aged mice. In young mice, there was a decrease in the number of TH-ir cell bodies in the SN of young mice, but not in VTA or LC. In aged mice, there was a significant decrease in the number of TH-ir cell bodies in VTA as well as SN. It was concluded that aged mice were more sensitive to MPTP than young mice, and MPTP-treated aged mice a more useful animal model for studing the characteristics of Parkinson's disease.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common subtype of primary hepatobilliary cancer. Despite advances in surgical and medical therapy, its survival rate remains poor. Compared to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common liver malignancy, the underlying mechanisms of cholangiocarcinoma carcinogenesis are poorly characterized. P-cadherin (CDH3) is a cadherin super family member. Although CDH3 is frequently over-expressed in cholangiocarcinoma tissues, its roles have never been characterized. To determine the roles of CDH3 in cholangiocarcinoma, we investigated CDH3 function in HuCCT1 cells using specific siRNA. Transfection with CDH3 siRNA did not affect proliferation of HuCCT1 cells. However, cell migration and invasion were significantly reduced when CDH3 was down-regulated. In addition, expressions of several biomarkers for epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) were not changed by CDH3 down-regulation. These results suggest that CDH3 regulates cell migration independent of EMT in cholangiocarcinoma cells.

Endovascular treatment of isolated bilateral common iliac artery aneurysm (CIAA) requires salvage of at least one internal iliac artery to prevent complications such as ischemic buttock claudication. We treated a case of bilateral CIAAs using an internal iliac branched stent graft. We report a case of a 58-year-old man who presented with bilateral CIAAs. The left internal iliac artery was occluded with coil embolization. The right internal iliac artery was saved by using a branched stent graft. The aneurysms were excluded with conventional endovascular aneurysm repair. Completion angiography showed technical success. Follow up computed tomography angiogram at three months showed complete exclusion of bilateral CIAAs, no endoleaks, and patent right internal iliac artery. There was no pelvic ischemic complication. We treated successfully a case of isolated bilateral CIAAs using an iliac branched stent graft.

Diagnosing pseudoaneurysms of the popliteal artery is usually straightforward in physical examinations and imaging findings. However, when a pseudoaneurysm shows a soft tissue mass with adjacent osseous change, it can mimic a bone tumor or a soft tissue sarcoma. We present a case of a 65-year-old man who had a pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery showing soft tissue mass and insinuating into the intramedullary cavity of the tibia. This presented case emphasizes the importance of considering pseudoaneurysms in the differential diagnosis of an apparent soft tissue mass with pressure erosion in adjacent bone.

Korean Journal of Psychopharmacology 2002;13(2):113-119
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor on MK-801-elicited behaviors in rats in an attempt to elucidate the participation of NO in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and to identify the possibility of NOS inhibitor's antipsychotic property. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 250-300g, were given MK-801 in order to know behavioral changes induced by MK-801. Next time, animals were pretreated with Nomega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA) as a NOS inhibitor and haloperidol before administration of MK-801, respectively. Separate behavioral rating scales were introduced for quantifying MK-801-induced locomotor activity, stereotyped behaviors and ataxia in order that these behaviors might be assessed independently. Animals were observed for 30 seconds and scored once every 10 min. during a period of 1 hour. RESULTS: 1) Locomotor activity and stereotyped behavior were significantly increased by MK-801 in rats. 2) Locomotor activity and stereotyped behavior were significantly diminished by pretreatment with haloperidol. 3) Locomotor activity and stereotyped behavior were also significantly diminished by pretreatment with L-NA. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that NO may, in part, mediate behavioral changes induced by MK-801, and that inhibitors of NOS may have antipsychotic action.
