PURPOSE: This study was conducted to compare the rates of industrial accidents in workplaces that adopted the 2011 Workplace Health Promotion Subsidy Scheme before and after the implementation. METHODS: The study analyzed the raw data of industrial accidents of 304 workplaces which received subsidies for health promotion activities in 2011. The raw data covered the period from February 2010 to July 2012, based on the dates of industrial accidents. RESULTS: Workplaces subsidized for health promotion activities reported fewer occurrences in staff injuries and illnesses than before the subsidization, as the total number of industrial accident victims dropped from 0.35 to 0.24. The rate of industrial accidents also dropped from 0.49 to 0.35, with the number of working days decreased from 35,433 to 23.867, about 33%. CONCLUSION: The study showed that financial support for health-promoting activities contributed to the decease in industrial accidents, which is an important indication advocating the need for corporate and government investment on workers health promotion programs. Furthermore, this study is also significant as it is the first research conducted in Korea to examine the impact of a workers health promotion project using a direct indicator, the rate of industrial accidents.

Intraluminal duodenal diverticulum (IDD) is a rare congenital abnormality, consisting of a sac-like mucosal lesion in the duodenum. Cases of IDD can present with gastrointestinal bleeding, duodenal obstruction, or pancreatitis. Here, we report a rare case of a 25-year-old female presenting with IDD complicated by duodeno-duodenal intussusception and recurrent pancreatitis. The diagnosis was based on findings from radiologic examinations (CT and MRI), upper gastrointestinal series (barium swallow), and gastroduodenofiberscopy. Laparoscopic excision of the presumed duodenal duplication was performed. The subsequent histopathologic evaluation of the excised sac revealed normal mucosa on both sides, but the absence of a proper muscle layer confirmed the diagnosis of IDD. PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and satisfaction with volunteer work in a population of health care center volunteers. Ultimately, the results from this study would help to find ways to keep volunteers continuing their work. METHODS: The participants of this study were 179 volunteers who were affiliated with three health care centers located in Gyeonggi-do. Descriptive statistics and multi-stage regression were conducted to analyze data. RESULTS: Self-esteem was significantly associated with the satisfaction with volunteer activity. In addition, the relationship with clients rather than volunteers' general characteristics was also significantly related to the satisfaction with volunteer work. CONCLUSION: Therefore, it is necessary to increase a volunteer's self-esteem so that the volunteer can keep continuing his or her volunteering activities. Also, in order to promote good relationships between the volunteers and the clients, it will be important to teach communication skills to volunteers.

Pilomattiaoma, aften called calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, is a benign tumor originating from the outer root sheath cell of the hair follicle and extending into the hair matrix, Pilomatricoma usually occurs as a single, asymptomatic dermal or subcutaneous nodule. Multiple lesions are quite unueuel, comprising only 2-3.5% of cases. We report two patients with multiple pilomatricoma.

We produced two murine monoclonal antibodies designated S2E1 and S2C11, which recognize S antigen of hepatitis B virus (HBsAg). S2E1 could bind to denatured form of recombinant HBsAg as well as native form of HBsAg, but S2C11 could bind only to native form of HBsAg. Both antibodies reacted with HBsAg in the hepatocyte of patient infected with hepatitis B virus. Analyses of the nucleotide sequences encoding the variable regions of these antibodies revealed that S2E1 and S2C11 utilize variable gene segment which belong to V4/5 gene family and utilize the J5 and Jk4 gene segments, respectively. In addition, the heavy chain of S2E1 express a member of V14 gene family and a member of DSP2.9 and Jh3 gene families. S2C11 is related to the V1 gene family and expresses DFL16.1 gene regions in conjunction with the Jh3 gene segment.

Cholangiography is essential to demonstrate a choledochocele. Because choledochoceles are often associated with characteristic structual alterations of the papilla of Vater and the peripapillary area, ERCP is helpful in demonstrating a choledochocele. We present the clinical, endoscopic and radiographic (ERCP) findings in a patient with choledochocele.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been known to increase the rate and degree of bone formation by virtue of growth factors in concentrated platelets. Although its great healing effect on bone defect or pre-implantation site preparation in conjunction with bone substitute has been reported, the effect associated with implant is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of PRP on rapid osseointegration of endosseous dental implants in the rabbit tibiae. Twenty two adult female New Zealand white rabbits, weighing approximately 2.7-3.3kg, were used for this study. Twelve of the 22 animals were used for histomorphometric analysis and ten of the 22 were for removal torque test. Each animal received two implants in each tibia (two treated with PRP and two as control) and was given fluorochrome intramuscularly. For histomorphometric analysis, rabbits were divided into four groups according to the healing period. At 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks postoperatively, each three animals were sacrificed serially and the amount and rate of bone formation around dental implant were examined on the undecalcified sections under fluorescent microscope, polarized microscope and light microscope connected to a personal computer equipped with image analysis system. For removal torque test, rabbits were divided into two groups and removal torque tests were performed at 4 weeks, 10 weeks after implant placement. In total, 88 screw shaped, commercially pure titanium implants (Neoplant, Neobiotech, Seoul, Korea) were used in this study. Labeling pattern reflected differences of two groups in bone formation rate at each period. Histomorphometrically, PRP group showed significantly higher bone volume within threads compared to control group at 2 weeks (70.30+/-4.96% vs. 50.68+/-6.33%; P<.01) and 4 weeks (82.59+/-5.94% vs. 72.94+/-4.57%; P<.05). PRP group at 1, 2 and 4 weeks revealed similar degree of bone volume formation comparable to control group at 2, 4 and 8 weeks, respectively. On the other hand, while PRP group showed higher bone-implant contact (47.37+/-8.09%) than control group (33.16+/-13.47%) at 2 weeks, there were no significant differences between PRP group and control group for any experimental period. Removal torque values also showed no significant differences between PRP group and control group at any experimental period (P>.05). These findings imply that PRP could induce rapid, more bone formation around implant during early healing period and get faster secondary stability for reducing healing period, though it has not induced bone maturation enough to resist functional loading.

BACKGROUND: A hand hygiene policy has been introduced by the Joint Commission International Accreditation Standards for Hospitals (JCI); the purpose of this policy is to ensure that systematic standards are continuously practiced at hospitals in order to improve the quality of medical care and the safety of patients and health care workers. This policy requires that phlebotomists wear new gloves and disinfect their hands before attending a patient to prevent nosocomial infections and to protect the phlebotomists. This study aimed to assess the responses of patients and guardians regarding the hand hygiene procedures. METHODS: Between January and February 2010, a questionnaire survey was performed at our hospital for 310 outpatients, 93 inpatients, and 189 guardians. RESULTS: In all, 70.8% of respondents answered that phlebotomists did not require considerable time to remove and wear gloves, and 69.9% responded that phlebotomists could readily detect veins even with their gloves on. Besides, 81.9% respondents thought that it was sanitarily important for phlebotomists to remove their gloves and disinfect their hands after a venipuncture, whereas only 2.8% thought that this practice caused discomfort. CONCLUSION: The patients and guardians recognized that the hand hygiene procedures were important for their own safety and encouraged their application rather than considering them uncomfortable or inappropriate. Introduction and maintenance of the hand hygiene policy of JCI would not be difficult because patients or guardians recognized its importance.

The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the association between periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease. A search of Embase, PubMed and The Cochrane Library databases was performed up to April 17, 2016. Article selection was based on cohort study design and the study subjects were patients with periodontal disease or severe periodontal disease. The final result was development of chronic kidney disease and kidney function decrease based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate values. The quantitative synthesis of the final selected articles was assessed using Review Manager statistical analysis software. A fixed-effects model meta-analysis was performed to estimate the degree of association between periodontal disease and chronic kidney disease. The search strategy identified 3,018 potentially eligible articles, of these, four studies were finally selected for meta-analysis, revealing that periodontal disease was significantly associated with the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (odds ratio, 1.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.44~1.90; p<0.001). In order to prevent the development of chronic kidney disease and kidney function decrease it is important to prevent periodontal disease, as well as minimizing the traditional risk factors known to reduce the quality of life of patients and increase disease burden.
