Mullerian agenesis or dysgenesis, rare developmental anomaly presenting as primary amenorrhea, is characterized by absence of vagina and absence or rudimentary development of the uterus. Anatomic anomalies of the axial skeleton and kindney often accompany this psychologically devatating condition. There are various methods of surgical treatment for congenital absence of the vagina. The six cases reviewed in this paper were all treated with McIndoe technique. All of 6 women experienced satisfactory sexual activity and were satisfied with vaginal depth following vaginal creation using a split thickness skin graft technique. Despite the existence of several alternative methods, the McIndoe technique is a relatively simple and highly successful procedure and hence is still prefered by many surgeons.

OBJECTIVE: Flow cytometric deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content analysis has been shown to be of prognostic importance in some cancers. In this study, DNA patterns obtained by flow cytometry in patients with cervical cancer have been shown to be related to a prognostic importance in cervical carcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We retrospectively reviewed 59 cervical cancer patients who admitted to the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Samsung Medical Center firom January 1995 to May 1997. RESULTS: A total of 59 archival paraffin-embedded blocks were proc 42.4 percent were found to be DNA content aneuploid (DNA-A) and 57.6 percent DNA content diploid (DNA-D). The S-phase fraction was significantly increased with stage. The incidences of aneuploid and relative DNA index were not significantly increased with the stage(P=0.280) and age of patients(P=0.088). The results had no significant differences between the squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, and no relationship between the groups with keratinizing cell type and nonkeratinizing type(P=0.409). The DNA ploidy patterns were not significantly correlated with metastasis to lymph node(P=0.179), tumor size(P=0.109), invasion depth(P=0.361) and recurrent group(P=0.285). High S-phase fraction had a tendency to correlate with the invasion depth(P=0,011), size(P=0.027), lymph node metastasis(P=0.039) and recurence(P=0.099) of cervical cancer. CONCLUSION: Flow cytometric DNA content analysis is being used more frequently in the management of different malignant tumors. Our study shows that DNA content analysis may not serve as an important biological indicator in determining the prognosis in cervical carcinoma, but High S-phase fraction has been connected with more aggressive tumors.

Fractures of the tibial plateau involve a major weight-bearing joint, Thus, to achieve good joint function one must strive to achieve joint congruity, axial alignment, stability, and a satisfactory range of motion. Present operative treatment of tibial plateau fractures utilizes the principles of anatomical reduction, elevation of the plateau en masse, bone grafting of the defect in the metaphysis, stable internal fixation and early joint motion. Authors reviewed the 45 tibial plateau fractures operatively treated at Dong-Kang Hospital from Jan. 1983 to Dec. 1988 and analyzed the possible factors that could influence the results. Factors that may adversely affect the results were 1) old female. 2) Hohl Type VI, 3) delayed operation, 4) inadequate reduction, 5) no bone graft, 6) meniscectomy, 7) cruciate ligament injury, and 8) delayed exercise.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chest pain are common among outpatients. Several researches shows that chest pain patients can suffer from psychiatric illnesses such as hypochondriasis, depression, anxiety, somatization, panic disorder and so on. This study aims to examine the pschogenic symptoms in patients with noncardiac chest pain METHODS: In this study, the 98 people who have undergone treadmill test for chest pain during the three months from June 1st to September 30 of 1998 were selected, and the 98 patients were asked to respond to the prepared questionnaire and SCL-MPD(symptom check list-minor psychiatric disorders) before they underwent treadmill test. And then, they were classified into two groups. One group consisted of patients with noncardiac chest,pain, and the other group of patients with cardiac chest pain. These two groups were compared in 10 measures, and the compared results were analyzed by t-test. RESULTS: Among the 25 patients with cardiac chest pain, 15 patients were males and 10 patients (38%) were females, and among the 44 patients with noncardiac chest pain, 31 patients (70%) were males, 13 patients (30%) were females. The average age was 47 years old. The average age in patients with noncardiac chest pain was 48, and the 46 for those patients with cardiac chest pain . In the statistical analysis between the patients with cardiac chest pain and those with noncardiac chest pain, significant difference(p<0.005) was shown in the measures such as somatization, depression, phobic anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, neurasthenic, hypochondriacal, anxiety, anger-hostility, interpersonal sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: As in the analysis the patients with noncardiac chest pain showed significant difference in the symptom check list-minor psychiatric disorder compared to those with cardiac chest pain. We conclude that primary care physician should take more interest in evaluating psychiatric symptoms in patients with noncardiac chest pain.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease is an acute febrile illness with systemic vasculitis which primarily affects children, We examined the production of leptin in plasma and gene expressions of CXC chemokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from patients with Kawasaki disease. METHODS: Consecutive 39 samples from 13 patients according to the different clinical stages (acute, subacute, convalescent) of Kawasaki disease were collected. The plasma leptin levels according to clinical stages of Kawasaki disease were examined by ELISA and the expression of IP-10, Mig and IL-8 mRNAs in 39 samples (13 samples of each stage) from 13 cases were examined by RT-PCR. RESULTS: There were not significant changes of plasma leptin levels according to the clinical stages of Kawasaki disease. The mean values of plasma leptin concentrations during each of the stages (n=13, p>0.05, pg/ml) were 335.8+/-549.0 in acute, 358+/- 347.6 in subacute, and 443.6+/-645.9 in convalescent stage. The mRNAs of IP-10, Mig, and IL-8 were expressed in 13/13 (100%), 2/13 (15%), 9/13 (69%) during acute stage, 13/13 (100%), 6/13 (46%), 13/13 (100%) during subacute stage, and 13/13 (100%), 4/13 (31%), 10/13 (77%) during the convalescent stage, respectively. In three patients, the production of leptin and expression of IP-10 mRNA were dramatically decreased according to the process of the clinical stages. In five patients with prominent cervical lymphadenopathy, the expression of IL-8 mRNA during the subacute stage was more elevated than the acute and convalescent stages. CONCLUSION: This data suggests that the production of leptin and the gene expressions of IP-10, Mig and IL-8 seem to have no significant correlation to the clinical stages of Kawasaki disease. However, expression patterns of IP-10, Mig and IL-8 mRNA may be related to the specific clinical manifestations, and the expression of IP-10 may also be correlated to leptin levels with pericardial involvement.
