1.MR Findings of Choroid Plexus Papilloma: Case Report.

PURPOSE: Choroid Plexus papilloma is a rare intracranial neoplasm that is most commonly found in the trigone of the lateral ventricle in children or in the fourth ventricle in adult. Extraventricular extension of choroid plexus papilloma has been rarely reported within the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) cistern. Authors report two cases of choroid plexus papilloma in the posterior fossa seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI findings of two cases of choroid plexus papilloma in posterior fossa were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: In the first case, the tumor was in the fourth ventricle and extended to the left CPA cistern via the foramen of Luschka. In the second case, the tumor presented as an expansile mass of the of fourth ventricle and right lateral recess. Multiple signal voids of low intensity due to prominent feeding vessels and calcifications within the tumors were noted. CONCLUSION: This report demonstrates MR findings of choroid plexus papilloma in the posterior fossa with the brief review of the literatures.

2.CT findings of early acute cerebral infarction.

The CT findings of the acute cerebral infarction are well known. However the CT findings of early stroke within 24 hours of the onset have not been sufficiently reported. The purpose of this study is to evaluate early acute cerebral infarction on CT within 24 hours after ictus. The early and accurate CT diagnosis could lead to the appropriate therapy and improved outcome of the patients. Authors retrospectively analyzed 16 patients with early acute cerebral infarction. Acute cerebral infarction was confirmed by follow-up CT in 11 patients, SPECT in 4 patients, and MRI in 1 patient. The CT findings of early acute cerebral infarction include effacement of cortical sulci or cistern (n=16, 100%), hyperattenuation of MCA (n=3), obscuration of lentiform nucleus (n=6), loss of insular ribbon (n=6) and subtle low density in hemisphere (n=5). The most frequent findings was effacement of cortical sulci in our study, and it was though to be the most important sign of early acute cerebral infarction.

3.The Effects of Mutant p21 Protein on DNA & Protein Synthesis in the Cultured Colon Cancer Cell Lines.

PURPOSE: The products of the ras oncogene are proteins of 188 or 189 amino acids and 21,000 molecular weights, termed simply p21 proteins. But the exact roles of c-ras proteins in cell proliferation and differentiation as well as in neoplastic transformation are little understood. The purpose of this study is to investigate the function of the p21 protein to the human colon cancer cell lines according to the exposure time and dosage of p21. METHODS: The authors divided tumor cell lines into 3 groups as follows; group 1 (control, colon cancer cell lines without administration of p21 or polyclonal antibody), group 2 (administration of p21 with labelling of 3H-thymidine and leucine), group 3 (simultaneous administration of p21 protein and polyclonal antibody with labelling of 3H-thymidine and 3H-leucine). After deciding the most effective dose of p21 protein and culture time with target cells in preliminary studies, the morphologic changes of target cells with administration of p21 protein and the p21 expression and interaction with anti-p21 polyclonal antibody were examined by phase contrast microscopy each other. RESULTS: The results were obtained as follows: 1. The most effective dose of the p21 with the colon cancer cell in increase uptake of 3H-thymidine and 3H-leucine were 50 ng but there were some differences in culture time of the 3H-leucine; 96 hours in SBA-1, 72 hours in HT-29 and 120 hours in SW-1116. 2. The increase uptakes of the 3H-thymidine by the different dosage of p21, 50 ng vs 200 ng were 131% (50 ng), 160% (200 ng) in SBA-1, 203% (50 ng), 123% (200 ng) in HT-29, and 127% (50 ng), 189% (200 ng) in SW-1116; and increase uptakes of 3H-leucine were 130% (50 ng), 159% (200 ng) in SBA-1, 113% (50 ng), 165% (200 ng), and 164% (50 ng), 169% (200 ng) in SW-1116. 3. There were some cellular proliferation and morphological changes of the colon cancer cells such as ruffling of the cell membrane, vesicle formation or rounding of the cell after administration of the mutant p21, but such changes were not observed after simultaneous administration of the mutant p21 and anti-p21 polyclonal antibody. CONCLUSIONS: The role of p21 protein has not been to make manifest wholly. In our study, the p21 protein induce the cell proliferation and morphological changes.

4.Congenital Giant Pigmented Nevus with Malignant Melanoma of Brain.

We report a case of congenital giant pigmented nevus with malignant melanoma of brain in a 14-year-old male patient. He had giant pigmented nevus on the back and neck, and multiple satellite lesions over the whole body since birth. One year prior to visit to our hospital, the patient suffered from various neurologie symptoms including headache, nausea, vomiting, seizure and right side motor weakness. Flistologic findings of skin lesions were benign nevocytic nevi. Computed tomogram of brain demonstrated increased densities in the both fronto-parietal leptameninges and brain parenchyme. Histologic findings of brain parenchyme by stereotaxic long needle biopsy showed the infiltration of melanin containing atypical melanocytes. There was no evidence of malignant melanoma at other organs. All of these findings suggested that origin of malignant melanoma of brain parenchyme was leptomeninges rather than skin.

5.MR findings of spinal epidural mass.

We analyzed the MR findings of spinal epidural mass in 23 patients retrospectively. MR images were performed at 1.5T unit. The lesions were confirmed as metastasis(12 cases), lymphoma (2 cases), leukemia(1 cases), multiple myeloma(2 cases), meningioma(3 cases), neurofibroma(1 case), dysraphism with lipoma(1 case) and lipomatosis(4 cases), Most MRI examinations consisted of T1, proton density and T2 weighted sagittal imaging of the spine, with additional pulse sequences or image planes as needed for clarification. The level of the spinal epidural mass was cervical spine level in 2 cases, thoracic in 15 cases, lumbar in 7 cases, and sacral in 2 cases. The location of epidural mass within the spinal canal was eccentric in 20 cases, multiple in 2 cases, and encircled in 4 cases. Paraspinal mass was seen in 11 cases. Signal intensity of epidural mass was variable. The marrow of spine revealed low signal intensity(SI) on TIWI and high SI on T2WI in 14 cases. In conclusion, MRI is a useful diagnostic tool for the evaluation of spinal epidural mass.

6.Xanthogranulomatous oophoritis: a case report.

A case of xanthogranulomatous oophoritis is presented in a patient who had a 3-month history of intrapelvic mass protruding into the vagina. The sonographic findings are a well defined mass shadowing lower echogenicity than the echo of the uterus at the posteosuperior aspect of the uterus. The CT findings are an enhancing solid mass with central necrosis containing a multiseptated cystic component.

7.The Structural Properties of Israeli Carp ( Cyprinus carpio L. ) Immunoglobulin.

Serum immunoglobulins from Israeli carp (I. carp) were purified using affinity chromatography. Fish were immunized with purified mouse IgG, and the specific fish antibodies purified from the immune serum on a mouse IgG-immobilized agarose gel. Rabbit anti-carp Ig (Raclg) antibodies were produced following hyperimmunization with mlgG specific I. Carp Ab. SDS-PAGE analysis under reducing condition showed that I. carp Ig (clg) were composed of two u-like heavy chains with about 82 and 50 kD, respectively and one light chain with about 25 kD. On immunoblotting analysis, however, Raclg failed to react with light chain. When both protein A and protein G purified normal clg were compared with mlgG specific clg, no significant structural differences among them were observed. To investigate if there is any homology between other fish Ig molecules, cross-reactivity of Raclg against Ig molecules from 6 different fish sera and mouse control serum was checked on immunoblotting analysis. As a result, Raclg responded to only carp and tilapia Ig molecules, indicating that both tilapia and carp are very closely associated, especially, in the genetic basis of immunoglobulin structure. In flow cytometry study, Raclg appeared to recognize 45.8% of carp Ig+, 14.5% of catfish Ig+ and <5% of tilapia Ig+ cells. The result suggest the heterogeniety between receptor immunoglobulins on B-like lymphocytes and soluble immunoglobulins in serum. It is crucial to obtain pure fish immunoglobulins to produce reagent antibodies as tools for the study of their specific immune response.

8.Bile duct changes in rats reinfected with Clonorchis sinensis.

This study describes an evaluation of the sonographic, cholangiographic, pathological, and immunological findings, and the protective effect shown by rats reinfected with Clonorchis sinensis. Eight experimental rat groups were, namely, a normal control, a primary infection control, a reinfection I (reinfection 7 week after treatment following 3-week infection), a reinfection II (reinfection 2 week after treatment following 8-week infection), a reinfection III (exploration of the intrahepatic bile ducts 1 week after reinfection 4 week after treatment following 4-week infection), a superinfection, a secondary infection control, and an infection following immunization group. Sonographic and cholangiographic findings showed moderate or marked dilatation of the bile duct confluence in the primary infection control, reinfection II, and secondary infection control groups. Juvenile worms survived in the intrahepatic bile ducts 1 week after reinfection following treatment in the reinfection III group. It was concluded that reinfecting juvenile worms found during the first week following reinfection failed to survive or grow further. Anatomical, pathophysiological, or immunological changes may induce protection from reinfection in rats.

9.Benign compression fractures of the spine: signal patterns.

Fifteen patients with 38 compression fractures of the spine underwent magnetic resonance(MR) imaging. We retrospectively evaluated MR images in these benign compression fractures. MR images showed four patterns in T1-weighted images. MR imaging patterns were normal signal(21), band like low signal(8), low signal with preservation of peripheral portion of the body(8), and diffuse low signal through the vertebral body(1). The low signal portions were changed to high signal intensities in T2-weighted images. In 7 of 15 patients(11 compression fractures). There was a history of trauma, and the remaining 8 patients(27 compression fractures) had no history of trauma. Benign compression fractures of trauma, remained 8 patients(27 compression fractures) were non-traumatic. Benign compression fractures of the spine reveal variable signal intensities in MR imagings. These patterns of benign compression fractures may be useful in interpretation of MR imagings of the spine.

10.A Clinical Study on Pathologic Fractures of Long Bones

Pathologic fracture is a bresk of bony continuity within an abnormal bone. The abnormslity ma be due to systemic skeletal disease, infection, primary benign and malignant tumor, or metastati carcinoms. Among these, metastatic carcinoma to bone is most common cause of pathologic fractur excluding those due to osteoporosis. When considering the msnagement, pathologic fractures due to systemic skeletal disease usually heal with conservative treatment, while others often require operative treatment. We have experienced 20 cases of pathologic fracture in long bones for 8 years from 19 to 1987. The results were as follows ; 1. The average sge was somewhat different according to underlying diseases Malignant tumorous lesion; 53 years Benign tumorous lesion ; 17 years Chronic osteomyelitis, 42 years 2. The most common cause was malignant tumorous lesion, 8 cases(40%). 3. The most frequent site was femur, 17 cases(85%). 4. Surgical treatment was done in 17 cases(85%), and conservative treatment was done in 3 cas(1sw). 5. In 3 cases of pathologic fractures due to metaststic tumor, the pain was markedly relieved and essy nursing care was possible immediately after operation.
