1.Clinical Evaluation of Conditioned Media of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Improvement of Symptoms of Sensitive Skin: Prospective, Single Blinded, Split-face Study

Background:
The exact definition of sensitive skin is not established yet. Since its high prevalence and significant influence on quality of life, it has become an important topic of research. Among various ingredients, conditioned media from umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSC-CM) can be a promising source for the treatment of sensitive skin.
Objective:
We evaluated the efficacy and safety of UCB-MSC-CM on patients with sensitive skin.
Methods:
We designed a randomized, single blinded, prospective, split-face comparison study and enrolled thirty patients. All patients underwent nonablative fractional laser over the entire face before UCB-MSC-CM or normal saline was applied. Each facial area was randomly assigned to undergo treatment with either UCB-MSC-CM or normal saline. We performed three sessions at two-week intervals, and final results were assessed on six weeks after the last session. As an outcome measure, we evaluated a five-point global assessment scale, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), erythema index (EI) and Sensitive Scale-10. Twenty seven subjects were included in final analysis.
Results:
The treated side exhibited greater improvement compared to the untreated side based on a five-point global assessment scale. TEWL, EI of the treated side were significantly lower than those of the untreated side throughout study period. Sensitive Scale-10 was significantly improved after treatment.
Conclusion
The application of UCB-MSC-CM resulted in improved skin barrier function and reduced inflammatory responsiveness, which could provide beneficial effect on sensitive skin.
2.Identification of Antigenic Proteins in Trichomonas vaginalis.

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease due to infection with Trichomonas vaginalis, and it can cause serious consequences for women's health. To study the virulence factors of this pathogen, T. vaginalis surface proteins were investigated using polyclonal antibodies specific to the membrane fractions of T. vaginalis. The T. vaginalis expression library was constructed by cloning the cDNA derived from mRNA of T. vaginalis into a phage lambda Uni-ZAP XR vector, and then used for immunoscreening with the anti-membrane proteins of T. vaginalis antibodies. The immunoreactive proteins identified included adhesion protein AP65-1, alpha-actinin, kinesin-associated protein, teneurin, and 2 independent hypothetical proteins. Immunofluorescence assays showed that AP65-1, one of the identified immunogenic clones, is prevalent in the whole body of T. vaginalis. This study led us to identify T. vaginalis proteins which may stimulate immune responses by human cells.

PURPOSE: As a result of various independently proposed nomenclatures and classifications, there is confusion in the diagnosis and prediction of biological behavior of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs). A comprehensive nationwide study is needed in order to understand the biological characteristics of GEP-NETs in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected 4,951 pathology reports from 29 hospitals in Korea between 2000 and 2009. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to determine the prognostic significance of clinicopathological parameters. RESULTS: Although the GEP-NET is a relatively rare tumor in Korea, its incidence has increased during the last decade, with the most significant increase found in the rectum. The 10-year survival rate for well-differentiated endocrine tumor was 92.89%, in contrast to 85.74% in well differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma and 34.59% in poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma. Disease related death was most common in the biliary tract (62.2%) and very rare in the rectum (5.2%). In Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, tumor location, histological classification, extent, size, mitosis, Ki-67 labeling index, synaptophysin expression, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, and lymph node metastasis showed prognostic significance (p<0.05), however, chromogranin expression did not (p=0.148). The 2000 and 2010 World Health Organization (WHO) classification proposals were useful for prediction of the prognosis of GEP-NET. CONCLUSION: The incidence of GEP-NET in Korea has shown a remarkable increase during the last decade, however, the distribution of tumors in the digestive system differs from that of western reports. Assessment of pathological parameters, including immunostaining, is crucial in understanding biological behavior of the tumor as well as predicting prognosis of patients with GEP-NET.
