Transient hyperkalmia following intravenous administration of succinylcholine chloride is well known in normal patients. Increase in serum potassium(K+) can be greater in disease state, such as burn, massive trauma, uremia, neuromuscular disease, and tetanus. In the present study, changes in serum potassium and sodium level in 20 control group and 20 patients with infections of varying severity were measured after administration of SCC. The following results were obtained. 1) In all infected patients, serum potassium concentration was increased, hile wonly 70% of the control group was increased. 2) Serum potassium levels after administration of succinylcholine chloride increased in the control group(average 0.40+/-0.9mEq/L) and in the infected group(average 0.68+/-0.15 mEq/L). 3) The paek elevation of serum potassium level was 5 min. after administration of succinylcholine chloride in both groups. 4) There was asignificantly increased serum potassium concentration(p<0.01) in the infected group compared to the control group. 5) Serum K was increased above 0.5mEq/L in serum potassium level regardless of duration of infection. 6) Serum sodium concentration after administration of succinylcholine chloride was slightly decreased in both groups, but statistically this was not significant(p>0.05).

The authors have had contact with 508 cases of perineal surgery receiving various kinds of anesthetic methods and these cases who were analazed at the Department of Anesthesiology, Ewha Womans University Hospital during the 5 year period from January 1976 to December 1980. The results are as follows: 1) There is the trend towards increasing numbers of perineal operations annually. 2) Ratio of males to females was 1.1:1.0. 3) Spinal anesthesia was the most commonly used technique(56.9%). 4) For geriatric patients, selection of anesthesia was regional aensthesia rather than general anesthesia. 5) The most common diagnosis and performed operation was hemorryhoidectomy and other perianal procedures(61.2%). 6) For premedication, demerol and atropine were commonly used(50.2%). 7) Most cases ended within 30minutes(62.8%). 8) Saddle block was satisfactory for perineal operation. And for this level, 6~8 mg of tetracaine was sufficient in spinal anesthesia.

Ludwig's Angina is the term given to the symptoms resulting from infection of the submandibular space and is characterized especially by extreme edema of the floor of the mouth. Airway obstruction and respiratory difficulty is common due to edema of the mouth, tongue, and the glottis, from mediastinitis due to spread, or from septicemia or pneumonia. Thus it is necessary for the anesthetist to attend to specific management of airway maintenance. A 49 year old male had an operation for incision and drainage under balanced anesthesia. After the operation, posthypoxic myoclonus due to anoxia for three minutes appeared while in the recovery room. The patient, controlled by oxygen supply and diazepam and antiepileptics, has recovered from the seizures, but has not recovered from intention myoclonus and speech disturbance, which are slowly improving. This report describes this case of posthypoxic myoclonus following anesthesia and reviews the literatures.

The authora have had contact with 951 cases of surgery of the lower extremities receiving various kinds of anesthtic methods and these cases were analyzed at the department of Anesthesiology, Ewha Womans University Hospital during the 7 year period from January 1970 to December 1982. The result are as follows: 1) There is a trend towards increasing numbers of operations annually. 2) The most common age group was 3rd decade(24%) 3) Ratio of males to females was 2:1. 4) Class I of physical status(ASA) was most common(61.2%) 5) For premedication, meperidine and atropine sulfate were commonly used(32.9%). 6) In the section of surgery, Orthopedic surgery is most common(90.4%) 7) General anesthesia was the most commonly used technique(69.8%) 8) Most cases ended within 2 hours(60.1%)
