This dental anthropological study was performed to analyse male and female students of Che-ju high school students. Cephalometric X-rays and dental casts were obtained of 60 male and 60 female students and the Mean and Standard Deviation were obtained. There was no difference in craniofacial morphology between male and female students but the size of craniofacial skeleton of the male is bigger than that of the female. The distance from NB line to pogonion is longer in the male group, and it meant that mandibular symphysis of the male is well developed than the female. The size of teeth of the male is larger than that of the female and is significant in upper and lower canine and first molar. The size of upper arch width, intercanine width, basal arch width and lower basal arch width of the male is larger than that of the female, but arch length of the male and the female showed no significant difference.

To evaluate the reproducibility of the Ambulatory Electrocardiography (AECG), we examined the consistency rates of premature beats between the baseline AECG's and the repeat AECG's in 23 patients who underwent AECG's times within 1 year. 12 patients were male and 11 patients were female. Their mean age was 48 years. (Range ; 20 years-75 years) The time interval between both AECG's was 1 month 20 days. (Range ; 1 day-9months) They did not take any antiarrhythmic druge during the observation period except 4 patients who were taking calcium channel blockers or beta receptor blockers for hypertensive heart disease or ischemic heart disease. The consistency rate of both frequency and complexity of ventricular premature beats was 52%. The consisency rate of both frequency and complexity of supraventicular premature beats was 35%. These consistency rates seemed to vary as the time interval between both AECG's differed. In the case of ventricular premature beats, the consistency rates of 1 day, 8 days and 5 months as the time interval were 100%, 38% and 14% respectively. In the case of supraventricular premature beats, the consistency rates were 50%, 25% and 29%. We concluded that the reproducility of the AECG was low and this reproducibility became lower as the time interval between both AECG's became longer and that hese facts had to be considered when the effect of the antiarrhythmic drugs was evaluated.

We checked and analysed the clinical and radiological status of the upper extremities of 142 baseball player in childhood and adolescence. The results of this study were as follow:1. The oreder of frequency of pain locations in the upper extremities was elbow, shoulder, and then wrist joint. 2. There was colse relationship between elbow pain and career, but not in shoulder and wrist area. 3. The characteristics of shoulder or wrist pain were diffuse and vague nature, but elbow pain was located in medial aspect. 4. The cubitus valgus and limited elbow ROM in throwing side were found in pitchers or older careers. 5. The utility of computerized tomogaphy in the study of the anatomy, and pathology of the musculoskeletal system has been the subject of considerable interest since the introduction of CT scanning. It provides an accurate and detailed cross-sectional image of normal anatomical structures and shows the relation of masses to these structures. In order to assess the utility of computed tomography, we analyzed the 92 clinical cases. We divided our experience into three major categories: spinal lesios, pelvic (including hip) lesions, and lesions of extremities. The advent of a new prototype scanning device has made it possible to exam a variety of abonormalities in the orthopedic diseases in a manner not previously possible.

Proximal tibial osteotomy is a procedure usually employed for osteoarthritis of the knee with a predominant single compartment involvement accompanied by pain and angular deformity. It has as its objective the shift of the gravitational line of weight from an involved to a relatively uninvolved side of the knee. We studied the preoperative clinical status and postoperative results in twenty-two patients (twenty-four knees) who had had a proximal osteotomy for osteoarthritic varus deformity. The mean length of follow-up was 2.6years(Range, 6months to 4.8years). In the preoperative evaluation of the lesion, we used bone scintigraphy to estimate the range and extent of the osteoarthritic change. The scintigraphic results were more sensitive to simple x-ray finding in a disease process. The range of motion of the knee were improved after osteotomy, from 7.7degree-128 degree to 2.6 degree-135degree(5.1degree in flexion contracture and 7 degree in further flexion). Correction of the tibiofemoral angle was performed to the level that we had decided correction angle to 7 degree and 3 degree of overcorrection. The correltion of good clinical results and tibiofemoral angle was dependent on whether the postoperative tibiofemoral angle is more than 5 degree valgus or not.

Thirty three patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were administered ramipril, a new ACe inhibitor, 2.5-5mg once daily for 6 weeks to evaluate the hypotensive efficacy and safety. The results were as follows : 1) The patients consisted of 18 males, 15 females, aged 54 on average and classified as mild in 19 and moderate in 14 patients. 2) At the end of 6 weeks trial, blood pressure dropped 13/6mmHg on average, rewarding 70% effectiveness and normalized below 150/90mmHg in 39%. 3) The most frequent side reaction was dry cough in 5 patients(15%) followed by asthenia, GI trouble, dizziness, edema, eye injection and one case of GPT elevation which normalized after completion of trial. 4) The rating of safety of safety was 79% and of overall usefulness was 73%. In conclusion, ramipril 5mg once daily regimen is well tolerated and effective in the treatment of mild to moderated essential hypertension.

Fifty patients with mild essential hypertension were studied to evaluate the efficacy of once-daily regimen of nitrendipine, 10~20mg daily for 12 weeks. 1) Thirty-Seven patients completed the study and showed -9% change in mean arterial headache etc. 2) Eight patients were dropped out because of side reaction, namely flushing, palpitation, headache etc. 3) Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring before and after treatment in 3 patients confirmed the drug efficacy revealing 9% decrement in mean blood pressure and 46% decrease in % elevated BP. 4) Twenty patients who were controlled with other hypotensive drugs were well controlled & maintained the blood pressure in normal range after switching to nitrendpine 10~20mg daily. In conclusion, citrendipine is a safe and good antihypertensive calcium antagonist in the treatment of mild hypertensives with 10~20mg of once-daily dosage.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study was conducted to assess the disease burden of pneumonia according to age and presence of underlying diseases in patients admitted with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS: We performed a retrospective, observational study and collected data targeting patients with CAP (> or = 50 years) from 11 hospitals. Disease burden was defined as total per-capita medical fee, severity (CURB-65), hospital length of stay (LOS), and mortality. RESULTS: Of the 693 enrolled subjects, elderly subjects (age, > or = 65 years) had a higher mean CURB-65 score (1.56 vs. 0.25; p < 0.01) and higher mortality than nonelderly subjects (4.4% [n = 21] vs. 0.5% [n = 1]; p = 0.00). In addition, the total cost of pneumonia treatment was higher in elderly patients compared to in nonelderly patients (KRW 2,088,190 vs. US $1,701,386; p < 0.01). Those with an underlying disease had a higher CURB-65 score (1.26 vs. 0.68; p < 0.01), were much older (mean age, 71.24 years vs. 64.24 years; p < 0.01), and had a higher mortality rate than those without an underlying disease (3.5% [n = 20] vs. 1.7% [n = 2]; p = 0.56). Total per-capita medical fees were higher (KRW 2,074,520 vs. US $1,440,471; p < 0.01) and hospital LOS was longer (mean, 8.38 days vs. 6.42 days; p < 0.01) in patients with underlying diseases compared to those without. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the relatively high disease burden in Korea, particularly in the elderly and in those with an underlying disease, closer and more careful observation is needed to improve the outcomes of patients with CAP.
