OBJECTIVETo assess the clinical and histological features and therapeutic efficacy of 30 cases of malignant sublingual salivary gland tumors.
METHODSThe clinicopathologic data of 30 patients with malignant sublingual salivary gland tumor were obtained from West China Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University from 1955 to 2005.
RESULTSThere were 18 male and 12 female, and the average age of patients was 50.6 years old. Seventeen cases were adenoid cystic carcinoma, accounting for 56.7%. There were 17 cases clinically staged as III, accounting for 56.7%. Distant metastasis and tumor recurrence were the main death reasons. The overall local recurrence rate was 30.0%, and distant metastasis rate was 26.7%.
CONCLUSIONSublingual gland malignant tumors are rare and most of them are adenoid cystic carcinoma. Surgery is the main treatment option. The resection of the tumor accompanying with the neck dissection is the key method to achieve good therapeutic effect. The postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy should be adjuvant.

gland tumors. Pleomorphic adenoma accounts for 60% of all parotid gland tumors, 50% of submandibular gland tumors, and only 25% of sublingual gland neoplasms. Fifty percent of all oral minor gland tumors are pleomorphic adenomas of which 55% arise in the palate, 25% in the lip, 10% in the buccal mucosa, and 10% from all other oral and oropharyngeal sites. The presence of tumors within the parapharyngeal space is rare. Some investigators have reported pleomorphic adenomas originating in the deep lobe of the parotid gland advancing to involve this region, as well as primary pleomorphic adenomas of nonparotid origin. We present a case report of pleomorphic adenoma in the parapharyngeal space with literature review. The tumor was completely removed under general anesthesia via submandibular incision with the division of mandible.]]>

As an uncommon, malignant salivary gland tumor with female predominance, hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is regarded as an indolent tumor. The diagnosis of this rare tumor is challenging, and it depends on microscopic and immunohistochemical (IHC) studies. Although it is regarded as an indolent tumor, there are reports of unconventional forms with aggressive clinical courses. We report an atypical case of this rare tumor, HCCC, in a male patient who had a relatively large-sized mass (3.8x3.0 cm) on the right mouth floor with ipsilateral neck node metastasis. The clinical, radiological, pathological, and IHC features together with the clinical course are described.

We report a case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of a sublingual gland in a 70-year-old man. Under a clinical diagnosis of benign salivary gland tumor, excision of the mass with the sublingual salivary gland in an en bloc fashion via an intraoral approach was performed. Histopathologically, there was a rupture of the fibrous capsule and diffuse cell-rich sheets composed of myoepithelial cells with round nuclei were also seen. Immunohistochemically, the cells that composed of cell rich sheets were positive to smooth muscle actin. Final diagnosis of myoepithelial carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma was made.
