Microbiology 1992;0(05):-
Carotenoids play an important role in regulating the hydrogen production of hydrogen-producing Rhodobacter sp. The carotenoids of hydrogen-producing Rhodobacter sp. grown in acetate medium were extracted by using acetone-methanol (7∶2,V/V) solvent and were separated by using thin-layer chromatography on silica-gel plate. The qualitative and quantitative of the carotenoids were analyzed by spectrometry. The results showed that the carotenoids were completely extracted three times with acetone-methanol (7∶2,V/V) in two hours. The ultrasonication had little effect on yield of carotenoids. The yield of carotenoids was 2.81mg/g wet cell. There were 4 spots on the silica-gel plate in the order of yellow, red, light red and light yellow. Yellow spot and red spot were the dominant composition of carotenoid in Rhodobacter sp. The spectrometry data showed that the yellow and red component might be the spheroidene and spirilloanthin respectively.

Objective To investigate prognostic factors for bloodstream infection in adult patients. Methods Clinical data of 131 adult patients with positive blood cultures during January 2002 to December 2003 in the Hospital were collected and 91 cases of them were retrospectively analyzed to understand their pathogen species and prognostic factors for it.Results Blood samples from 91 patients were cultured positive,53 cases(58.2%)with gram-negative bacteria mainly including Escherichia coli,Salmonella spp. and Klebsiella pneumoniae,28(30.8%)with gram-positive bacteria, mainly including Staphylococcus aureus and coagnlase-negative Staphylococci,eight(8.8%)with fungi and two(2.2%)with multiple infections.Case fatality ratio in this group of patients with septicemia was 30.8% during their hospitalization, and that in those with Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Staphylococcus aureus,Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and E.coli with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase was over 50%.Case fatality ratio was associated with severity of sepsis(OR=1.15)and inappropriately initial empirical treatment with antibiotics (OR=6.77).Conclusions Pathogen causing bloodstream infection in adults were mainly gram-negative bacteria and severity of infection and inappropriate initial antibiotics treatment could increase their fatality.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the Toxoplasma gondii (TOX) infection in males with sterility and the effect of the infection on the reproductive function of males.
METHODSEnzyme linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect TOX-CAg, TOX-IgG and TOX-IgM in the peripheral blood of male patients with sterility.
RESULTSAmong 100 cases of male sterility, 7 were TOX-IgG positive (7%), 16 TOX-IgM positive (16%) and 13 TOX-CAg positive (13%). Among 100 normal males, 7 were TOX-IgG positive (7%), 3 TOX-IgM positive (3%) and 1 TOX-CAg positive (1%).
CONCLUSIONTOX infection may affect the fertility of males and cause male sterility. For this reason, males should prevent themselves from TOX infection.

This study is to establish an UPLC fingerprint of Resina Draconis from different manufacturers, which can provide a comprehensive evaluation for its quality control. The analysis was performed on a Phenomenex Kinetex 2.6 μ C18 100A column by agradientelution program with acetonitrile-water as mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.7 mL x min(-1). The column temperature was 40 degrees C and the detection wavelengthwas 280 nm. The fingerprints of 18 batches of Draconis Resina were further evaluated by chemometrics methods including similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). As a result, there were 15 common peaks, 13 of which had been identified by LC-Q-TOF MS, and the similarity degrees of 15 batches of the samples was more than 0.9, and the samples were divided into 4 clusters by their quality difference. The method is reproducible, simple and reliablethat it can be used for quality control and evaluation of Resina Draconis from different manufacturers.

Objective To evaluate the effect of low-dose ketamine on the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) under propofol anesthesia in depressed rats. Methods Sixty adult male SD rats weighing 200-250 g were used in this study. The depression model was established by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). The animals were then randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 10 each): control group (group C), depression group (group D), propofol group ( group P), propofol + ECT group ( group PE), ketamine + propofol group ( group KP), and ketamine + propofol + ECT group (group KPE). Groups P and KP received intraperitoneal propofol 100 mg/kg and ketamine 10 mg/kg + propofol 80 mg/kg respectively, and groups PE and KPE received ECT after intraperitoneal injection of propofol 100 mg/kg and ketamine 10 mg/kg + propofol 80 mg/kg respectively once a day for 7 consecutive days. All rats underwent sucrose fluid consumption and Morris water maze tests before CUMS, after CUMS, and after treatment. Results Compared with group C, the sucrose consumption percentage was significantly decreased, the escape latency was prolonged, and the time spent in the target quadrant (the original platform quadrant) was shortened after CUMS in D, P, PE, KP and KE groups ( P < 0.05). Compared with group D,the sucrose consumption percentage was significantly increased (P < 0.05), while no significant change in the escape latency and time spent in the target quadrant was found after treatment in group KPE ( P > 0.05 ), and the sucrose consumption percentage was significantly increased, the escape latency was prolonged, and the time spent in the target quadrant was shortened after treatment in group PE ( P < 0.05). Compared with group PE, the sucrose consumption percentage was significantly increased, the escape latency was shortened, and the time spent in the target quadrant was prolonged after treatment in group KPE ( P < 0.05). Conclusion Low-dose ketamine can not only enhance the efficacy of ECT under propofol anesthesia in depressed rats, but also reduce cognitive impairment induced by ECT.
