Recently, the understanding of metabolic reprogramming in cancer is expanding continuously.Besides glycolysis, researchers are now paying more attention to amino acid metabolism, especially glutamine metabolism.Glutamine is one of the most abundant non-essential amino acids in human body, but it is a “conditionally essential” amino acid in various types of cancer cells. Thus, targeting glutamine metabolism is becoming a promising strategy for the development of novel cancer therapeutic agents. In addition, another gradually clarified metabolic pathway is serine and glycine metabolism. In this review, we will focus on the alterations, the underlying mechanisms, and significance of glutamine as well as serine and glycine metabolism. We will also discuss cancer therapy opportunities through targeting amino acid metabolism.

OBJECTIVETo explore effects of Shenqi preparation,Traditional Chinese Medicine, on anti-fatigue and anti-oxidant functions.
METHODSOne hundred and twenty mice were randomly divided into control group and 3 experimental groups. The high, medium and low-dose of Shenqi preparation were given to the 3 experimental groups respectively, while distilled water to the control group for 15 d. The loaded swimming time, the level of lactate, serum urea nitrogen (SUN), muscle and liver glycogen, liver super-oxide dismutase (SOD), the content of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) were assayed.
RESULTSThe loaded swimming test showed that the exhausted swimming time of 3 experimental groups [(296.0 +/- 25.3)s, (437.0 ĝ 38.9)s, (595.0 +/- 53.9)s respectively] was longer than that of control group [(231.0 +/- 22.5)s, P < 0.05, P < 0.01]. The liver glycogen content of the high and medium-dose experimental groups were higher than that of control group respectively (P < 0.01). The SUN content of each experimental group was less than that of the control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). Moreover,in the medium and high dose experimental groups, less accumulation of lactate was found (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), and the content of liver SOD and GSH-Px was higher (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). The content of liver MDA in high-dose experimental group was less than that of the control group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONShenqi preparation, especially the high and medium-dose experimental groups, is able to improve exercise tolerance and has anti-fatigue and anti-oxidant effects in mice.

Objective To explore the psychological stressors of pregnant women with chronic HBV infection. Methods Using phenomenological method of qualitative study, there were 9 pregnant women with chronic HBV infection participated in the study and their mental stress was investigated by deep interview. Results Five main psychological stressors of pregnant women with chronic HBV infection emerged:fear of children being infected; anxious about giving birth in the hospital for infectious diseases; having no idea of selecting the mode of delivery and feeding pattern; worrying about their own health; to feel nervous about playing the role of mothers. Conclusions Healthcare workers should make appropriate health guidance and psychological supports to alleviate the psychological distress combined with features of pregnant women with HBV infection. At the same time,it is necessary to make change of public misunderstanding of hepatitis B,so as to create a fair and friendly social atmosphere for all the hepatitis B patients.

ObjectiveTo investigate and compare the behavioral changes, neuron loss of hippocampus and mossy fiber sprouting between pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE) model and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) kindling model in rats.MethodsAfter two different epilepsy models were made, Vedio was adopted to observe the behavioral changes. Nissl staining and Neo-timms' staining were separately used to observe and compare the neuron loss of hippocampus and mossy fiber sprouting in the dentate gyrus (DG) at different time points during epileptogenisis.ResultsNo recurrent spontaneous seizure, no neuron loss and no mossy fiber sprouting were found in PTZ kindling model; whereas obvious neuron loss was found in CA1, CA3 of hippocampus and hilus of DG, and mossy fiber sprouting were found in pilocarpine model in parallel with recurrent spontaneous seizures. ConclusionPTZ kindling model resembles absence epilepsy in human, while pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus model resembles chronic temporal epilepsy in human. Neuron loss and mossy fiber sprouting may play an important role in epileptogenisis. Pilocarpine-induced epilepsy model can be regarded as an ideal chronic temporal epilepsy model.

China Biotechnology 2006;0(11):-
Targeting induced local lesions in genomes (TILLING) is a reverse genetics method for functional genomics research. It is possible to screen for point mutations in the populations of EMS mutagenesis with highthroughput and lowcost. EcoTILLING a method based on TILLING ,was developed for detecting multiple types of polymorphisms in germplasm collections, such as single nucleotide polymorphism, small deletion and insertion etc.Rice is a very important food crop and a model plant for genome research also. There are complete genome sequence and a lot of other bioinformatics resources about it.So the markerassisted breeding is becoming more and more important in rice breeding. Some issues based on TILLING about identifying germplasm based on gene sequence,EMS mutagenesis breeding, developing functional marker in rice breeding in future were discussed.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the relationship between apoptosis-related proteins in gastric mucosa, p53 and Bax, and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in children.
METHODSp53 and Bax expression in gastric mucosa were measured using immunohistochemical technique in 33 children with gastric mucosal lesions. Presence/absence of H. pylori infection was detected by the rapid urease and pathological tests.
RESULTSFifteen children (88%) showed positive expression of p53 in 17 children who were confirmed with H. pylori infection, compared with 9 (56%) in 16 H. pylori negative children. Thirteen children (76%) showed positive expression of Bax in the 17 children with H. pylori infection, compared with 6 (38%) in the 16 H. pylori negative children. The expression levels of p53 and Bax in the H. pylori positive group were significantly higher than those in the H. pylori negative group (p<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSH. pylori infection is associated with the over-expression of p53 and Bax proteins in gastric mucosa in children.

OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical effectiveness and safety of Tiantai No. 1 (TT1) in treating mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
METHODSWith randomized double-blinded method adopted, the 128 MCI patients, selected according to the commonly accepted standard for MCI diagnosis, were assigned to 2 groups, the treatment group (65 cases) treated with TT1 and the control group (63 cases) treated with placebo for six months. Besides, a normal control group with 30 healthy elders was set up. Changes of comprehensive cognitive function, instant memory, short-term memory, calculation ability, orientating ability of time and space, language understanding ability as well as Chinese medicine syndromes before and after treatment were observed and compared.
RESULTSThe cognitive function of MCI patients was significantly lower than that of healthy elders (P<0.01). The comprehensive cognitive function, and all the above-mentioned abilities were significantly improved (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the TT1 treated group after treatment, with an effect significantly better than that in the placebo treated group (P<0.01). Overall evaluation of effect and safety suggested that the clinical effectiveness index (CEI) of TT1 was notably higher than that of the placebo. And it was found in one-year follow-up that the incidence of developing to Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the treatment group was strikingly lower than that in the control group (P<0.01).
CONCLUSIONTT1 can significantly improve the cognitive function of MCI patients, and reduce their incidence of developing to AD.
