Objective This study was to explore a justifiable approach for the translation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) terms in the light of Skopos Theory and thus to provide references to the standardization of TCM terms.Methods By exploring the source and development of a TCM term Bi,we studied its connotation,compared available English versions and decided on the choice version.Results The word arthralgia,obstruction or impediment was found to be the most frequently used word in 12 recognized publications,more frequent than the transliteration of Bi.Conclusion It is suggested that an accurate and a complete understanding of TCM terms and English expressions are required prior to translating so that the faithfulness and accuracy of the translation are maintained for the sake of optimal approximation.

A 34-year-old male patient with suspected pheochromocytoma was referred to our department for paroxysmal hypertension. Pheochromocytoma was confirmed by very high plasma nor-metanephrine ( NMN ) and metanephrine ( MN ). Contrast CT of the adrenal disclosed a 3.0 cm x 3.0 cm mass in the left adrenal. 18 F-FDG-PET-CT showed high uptake only in the left adrenal. When the patient's blood pressure was well controlled with 4 mg/d doxazosin for 2 weeks, surgery was then performed under laparoscopy. A round solid left adrenal pheochromocytoma was resected. After surgery, plasma MN and NMN levels returned to normal, and the patient was free of clinical symptoms with normal blood pressure. This patient has been followed 3 years with normal blood pressure, MN, and NMN levels, without tumor recurrence shown hy adrenal CT.

BACKGROUND:Previous in vitro studies mainly focused on morphological and nerve marker aspects in the study of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs)-derived neuron-like cells,but less focused on the olectrophysiological properties of neuron-like cells following differentiation.OBJECTIVE:To study the electrophysiological changes of differentiation from BMSCs into neuron-like cells after induction by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)/alltrans-retinolc acid (AT-RA).DESIGN,TIME AND SETTING:The cytological comparative in vitro study was performed at the Department of Neural Cell Laboratory,Tianjin Huanhu Hospital and College of life Science of Nankai University from June 2005 to October 2007.MATERIALS:Totally 3 male Wistar rats (6-week old,weighing about 160 g) were used in this study.METHODS:BMSCs were cultured and purified by their characteristic of plastic adhesion in vitro,and then induced by BDNF,bFGF and AT-RA,and differentiate into neuron-like cells.Whole-cell patch damp technique was used to detect cell membrane current prior to and 3 days following induction.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:MSC phenotype was determined by flow cytometry.Cell morphology was observed under the inverted microscope before and after differentiation.Neuron specific enolase expression was assessed by immunocytochemistry.Whole-cell current results were measured.RESULTS:Flow cytometry results demonstrated that CD90 positive rate (99±3)%,CD31 (3.4±0.8)%,and CD34 (0.3±0.1)%.This indicated that these cells were undifferentiated stem cells,with purity of 95%.Undifferentiated MSCs under the optical microscope were mostly fiat cells with processes,similar to fibroblast-like cells.Neuron-like cells appeared 3 days following induction.Immunocytochemistry results showed that MSCs before induction were weakly positive for neuron specific enolase,but strongly positive for neuron specific enolase.At 72 hours,the differentiated rate was (24.01±3.76)%.The peak currents of outward currents in neuron-like cells were significantly higher in the induction group compared with the control group (P ＜ 0.05),but no inward Na~+ current was detected.CONCLUSION:(bFGF & BDNF)/AT-RA could induce the differentiation of MSCs into neuron-like cells.These cells showed the tendency to differentiate into mature neurons,though having no electrophysiological properties of mature neurons.

Objective:To construct recombinant adenovirus vector Ad5-CCL20,and detect the expression of CCL20 after Ad5-CCL20 transfected colon cancer cells CT-26.Methods:Genes encoding CCL20 was obtained from original plasmid double-digested with EcoR I/Sal I enzymes.The CCL20 DNA segments were linked into pDC316 to recombine shuttle plasmid pDC316-CCL20.After genome sequencing,we take shuttle plasmid pDC316-CCL20 and plasmid backbone pBHGIox_E1,3Cre co-transfecting 293T cells in mediation of liposome.The constructed recombinant adenovirus vector was named Ad5-CCL20.Lastly,after Ad5-CCL20 transfected CT-26 cells in vitro,the expression of CCL20 at different time points (12h,24h,36h and48h)was detected by Western blot and Elisa.Then,Culture supernatant was added into iDC and mDC to evaluate the chemotactic activity of CCL20.Results:The recombinant adenovirus Ad5-CCL20 were successfully constructed.The expression of CCL20 was detected by Western blot and Elisa.The level of CCL20 expression was increased with prolonged incubation of the infected CT-26 cells.Chemotaxis experiments show that the chemokine CCL20 had chemotactic activity to the iDC and mDC,but more obviouly for iDC (P＜0.05).Conclusion:The construction and obtain of recombinant adenovirus vector Ad5-CCL20 provide a new method for developing tumor immunotherapy.

[Summary] A 61-year-old female patient was diagnosed as ACTH independent Cushing′ syndrome, right adrenal adenoma, right facial infection. The situation was well controlled with antibacterial agents, abscess incision drainage and ketoconazole therapy. The patient received partial adrenolectomy of her right adrenal gland 16 months later. This case indicated that anti-adrenal agents could be a reasonable choice when the Cushing′syndrome patients were acompanied with severe infection.

OJECTIVE To investigate the preventive effect of Fengliao extract on ulcerative colitis of mice. METHODS Using the intestinal propulsion rate experiment and senna induced diarrhea model , the intestinal propulsion rate, diarrhea rate and index of diarrhea were observed. Mice were randomly divided into normal group,model group,mesalazine hydrochloride group and Fengliao extract 11.7, 23.4 and 46.8 g · kg-1 group. The mouse colitis model was induced by 4% dextran sulfate sodium. The mice were administraed once daily for 7 d while the disease activity index(DAI)score was calculated and the activity of tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α),interleukin-1β(IL-1β), myeloperoxidase(MPO) and content of malondialdehyde(MDA) and nitric monoxide (NO) in colon tissue were determined. RESULTS Fengliao extract 46.8 g · kg-1 inhibited the intestinal propulsion rate(P<0.05),reduced the frequency of diarrhea and the diarrhea index(P<0.05). Results of colitis showed that the body mass of mice in the model group was significantly decreased but the DAI score increased compared with normal group(P<0.05). The activity of MPO and the contents of IL-1β,TNF-α,MDA and NO in colon mucosa were increased(P<0.01). Compared with the model group,Fengliao extract 46.8 g·kg-1 decreased the DAI score(P<0.05)while Fengliao extract 46.8 and 23.4 g · kg-1 reduced MPO activity in colonic mucosa and content of IL-1β,TNF-α,MDA and NO in colonic homogenate(P<0.05). CONCLUSION Fengliao extract can significantly improve the DSS induced colitis in mice,which is probably associated with its antispasmodic and anti-diarrheal effect as well as the reduced release of inflammatory mediators and antioxidants.

ObjectiveTo retrospectively analyse the data of patients with suspected primary aldosteronism (PA) during the last five years.The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the value of aldosterone to renin ratio (ARR) in screening primary aldosteronism.MethodsThe clinical data of ARR in supine and upright positions were collected in 590 patients with suspected during January 2006 to August 2010.There were 357 patients diagnosed as primary aldosteronism and 233 patients as essential hypertension among these patients.100 patients with suspected primary aldosteronism took the upright and random ARR during September 2010 to April 2011 ; Among these patients,29 patients were diagnosed as primary aldosteronism and 71 as cases of essential hypertension.ROC curve was made to retrospectively define the method and the cut-off value of the supine,upright or random ARR.ResultsThe area under the curve(AUC) of the supine ARR in the 590 patients who took the supine and upright ARR during January 2006 to August 2010 was 0.838 (0.805-0.867 ) and the AUC of the upright ARR was 0.873 (0.843-0.899 ).There was significant difference between these two AUC readings (P＜0.01 ).The AUC in the upright ARR of the 100 patients who took the upright and random ARR during Septeuder 2010 to April 2011 was 0.962 (0.928 -0.995 ) and the AUC of the random ARR was 0.944 (0.893-0.994 ).There was no significant difference between these two AUC readings (P＞0.05).The upright ARR cutoff value with 400 ( pg · ml-1 )/( ng· ml-1 · h 1 ) yielded a sensitivity of 91.9％ and a specificity of 64.2％ to diagnosis of PA.ConclusionUpright ARR value was more suitable in the screening test than supine ARR value.Random ARR showed similar effect as the upright ARR.In our research,under strict control of the drug,position and detection time,ARR value with 400 ( pg · ml-1 )/( ng· ml-1 · h-1 ) can be the cutoff point in screening the suspcctcd PA patients.
