2."English translation of traditional Chinese medicine term ""Bi"": from the perspective of skopos theory"
International Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2013;(7):619-622
Objective This study was to explore a justifiable approach for the translation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) terms in the light of Skopos Theory and thus to provide references to the standardization of TCM terms. Methods By exploring the source and development of a TCM term Bi,we studied its connotation, compared available English versions and decided on the choice version. Results The word arthralgia, obstruction or impediment was found to be the most frequently used word in 12 recognized publications, more frequent than the transliteration of Bi.Conclusion It is suggested that an accurate and a complete understanding of TCM terms and English expressions are required prior to translating so that the faithfulness and accuracy of the translation are maintained for the sake of optimal approximation.

Objective To explore the impact of advanced glycation end-products ( AGEs) on matrix metalloproteinase 2 ( MMP-2) expression in cultivated INS-1 cells. Method INS-1 cells were cultivated and MMP-2 expression was analyzed. Glycated serum was prepared for incubating with INS-1 cell. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was detected by flow cytometry. The intracelluar MMP-2 expression was analyzed by RT-PCR, realtime PCR and Western blot. The MMP-2 cDNA was expressed in cultivated INS-1 cells. Result The level of ROS treated with AGEs was significantly higher than that in the control( P<0.05 ) , and the levels of MMP-2 and its protein expressions turned out as well( P<0. 05). Conclusion The results suggest that MMP-2 was expressed in INS-1 cells. Increased MMP-2 expression in ?cells may be induced by AGEs, suggesting that MMP-2 might play an important role in oxidative stress-mediated islet injury.

OJECTIVE To investigate the preventive effect of Fengliao extract on ulcerative colitis of mice. METHODS Using the intestinal propulsion rate experiment and senna induced diarrhea model , the intestinal propulsion rate, diarrhea rate and index of diarrhea were observed. Mice were randomly divided into normal group, model group, mesalazine hydrochloride group and Fengliao extract 11.7, 23.4 and 46.8 g · kg-1 group. The mouse colitis model was induced by 4% dextran sulfate sodium. The mice were administraed once daily for 7 d while the disease activity index(DAI)score was calculated and the activity of tumor necrosis factor α(TNF-α),interleukin-1β(IL-1β), myeloperoxidase(MPO) and content of malondialdehyde(MDA) and nitric monoxide (NO) in colon tissue were determined. RESULTS Fengliao extract 46.8 g · kg-1 inhibited the intestinal propulsion rate(P<0.05),reduced the frequency of diarrhea and the diarrhea index(P<0.05). Results of colitis showed that the body mass of mice in the model group was significantly decreased but the DAI score increased compared with normal group(P<0.05). The activity of MPO and the contents of IL-1β,TNF-α,MDA and NO in colon mucosa were increased(P<0.01). Compared with the model group,Fengliao extract 46.8 g·kg-1 decreased the DAI score(P<0.05)while Fengliao extract 46.8 and 23.4 g · kg-1 reduced MPO activity in colonic mucosa and content of IL-1β,TNF-α,MDA and NO in colonic homogenate(P<0.05). CONCLUSION Fengliao extract can significantly improve the DSS induced colitis in mice, which is probably associated with its antispasmodic and anti-diarrheal effect as well as the reduced release of inflammatory mediators and antioxidants.

Objective · To explore family medical intervention model of senile dementia with behavioral and psychological symptoms. Methods · Four streets of Changning District in Shanghai were randomly selected and subjects were enrolled according to the inclusion criteria, who were randomly divided into the intervention group (n=71) and control group (n=70). The intervention group received door-to-door service from psychiatric doctors, given drug treatment and psychological intervention. Subjects were evaluated by several scales, including Behavioral Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease Rating Scale (BEHAVE-AD), Mini-Mental State of Examination (MMSE), Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL), Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease (QOL-AD), and Generic Quality of Life Inventory-74 (GQOLI-74), at baseline and by the end of 6 months and 12 months. Results · ① There was no significant difference in the total scores and all factor scores of BEHAVE-AD between the two groups before intervention (P>0.05). Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed a significant main effect of time (P<0.001). The between-group effect was significant in the total scores of BEHAVE-AD and the factor scores of affective disorder, anxiety and terror (P<0.001). The interactive effect of time×group was significant in the total scores of BEHAVE-AD and the factor scores of delusion and affective disorder (P<0.05). ② Intergroup comparison of the BEHAVE-AD scores indicated that by the end of 6 months, factor scores of hallucination, circadian rhythm disorder, affective disorder, anxiety and terror of the intervention group were remarkably better than those of the control group and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). By the end of 12 months, total scores of BEHAVE-AD, and factor scores of delusion, conduct disorder, affective disorder, anxiety and terror of the intervention group were remarkably better than those of the control group and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.01). ③ There was no significant difference in the scores of MMSE, ADL, QOL-AD and GQOLI-74 between the two groups before intervention (P>0.05). Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed a significant main effect of time (P<0.001). The between-group effect was significant in the scores of MMSE and QOL-AD (P<0.001). The interactive effect of time×group was significant in the scores of MMSE, ADL, QOL-AD, and GQOLI-74 (P<0.05). ④ Inter-group comparison of MMSE, ADL, QOL-AD, and GQOLI-74 scores indicated that by the end of 6 months, scores of MMSE of the intervention group were remarkably better than those of the control group and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). By the end of 12 months, scores of MMSE, ADL, QOL-AD, and GQOLI-74 of the intervention group were remarkably better than those of the control group and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion · The family medical intervention model of door-to-door services from psychiatrists integrating multidisciplinary team is effective to attenuate the mental and behavioral symptoms of senile dementia patients, and can improve the quality of life of patients and caregivers. The effect of persistent implementation will be more remarkable.
