The purpose of this study was to investigate the gaps of bone-acetabular component interface, the initial mechanical stability and the effects of adjuvant screw fixation in the press-fitted two different shaped porous-coated acetabular components. Semi-hemispherical Harris-Galante II cup and full hemispherical Trilogy cup were press-fitted with or without adjuvant screw fixation in 40 bovine femur. The gaps of bone-implant interface were measured in each radiography of all specimen and axial compression tests and rotational stability tests were performed using servohydraulic tension-compression machine. There was significantly smaller gap at polar 1/3 region in the specimen implanted with Trilogy cup. But the adjuvant screw fixation did not affect the amount of gap. There was no significant statistical difference in axial load and rotational stability test in each situations of fixation. This study demonstrates that the initial mechanical stability is not influenced by the shape of semi-hemispherical Harris-Galante II cup and full hemispherical Trilogy cup and also independent of adjuvant screw fixation. But smaller gap of Trilogy cup at the polar 1/3 region indicates the possibility that less amout of wear debris of polyethylene or metal will be deposited and therefore less osteolysis or cup loosening will occur, but this hypothesis should be confirmed by the long-term clinical follow-up.

PURPOSE: Upper urinary tract diseases are major factors increasing morbidity and mortality in patients with spinal cord injuries. A video urodynamic study is one of the best methods for detecting neuro-urologic functional impairment in such patients. Therefore, the risk factors of upper urinary tract diseases were evaluated in patients with a spinal cord injury undergoing video urodynamics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were 161 spinal cord injured patients with voiding difficulty. The patients were divided into 2 groups, on the basis of the presence of upper urinary tract diseases, and compared according to various objective factors. In addition, the neurogenic bladder dysfunction was classified according to the anatomical level of the spinal cord injury. RESULTS: Of the 161 patients, 13 developed upper urinary tract diseases. When those patients with and without upper urinary tract diseases (complicated and normal groups, respectively) were compared, the rates of patients with chronic urethral or suprapubic catheterization, upper motor neuron injury, quadriplegia, complete injury and low compliance were higher in the complicated than the normal group. There was also an increasing rate of the prevalence of detrusor areflexia in lower motor neuron lesions. The patients with detrusor hyperreflexia, accompanied by detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia, mostly had a cervical cord injury. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic urethral or suprapubic catheterization, upper motor neuron injury, complete injury with quadriplegia, and low compliance are thought to be risk factors for inducing upper tract diseases in spinal cord injury patients. Thus, patients exposed to these factors should be monitored through video urodynamics and radiologic evaluation for the prevention and early detection of upper urinary tract diseases.

PURPOSE: To determine the prognostic and predictive value of liver volume in colorectal cancer patients with unresectable liver metastases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients received whole liver radiotherapy (WLRT) between January 1997 and June 2013. A total dose of 21 Gy was delivered in 7 fractions. RESULTS: The median survival time after WLRT was 9 weeks. In univariate analysis, performance status, serum albumin and total bilirubin level, liver volume and extrahepatic metastases were associated with survival. The mean liver volume was significantly different between subgroups with and without pain relief (3,097 and 4,739 mL, respectively; p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: A larger liver volume is a poor prognostic factor for survival and also a negative predictive factor for response to WLRT. If patients who are referred for WLRT have large liver volume, they should be informed of the poor prognosis and should be closely observed during and after WLRT.

Mitochondrial DNA (mt DNA) and the non-recombining region of the Y chromosome are passed down, unaltered, from generation to generation, matrilineally and patrilineally, respectively. Therefore, the Y-chromosome DNA and mtDNA are known as lineage markers, and they play important roles in studies based on human migration and evolutionary history. Y-chromosome DNA is used in forensic analysis to identify individuals involved in cases of sexual assault. In this paper, we review the methods of statistical evaluation of lineage markers used in forensic identification. We also review the combined approach of autosomal and lineage marker evidence.

Avulsion injury of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon from distal phalanx is considered as a rare injury. Accrording to the classification by Leddy and Pacter, this case is Type III, which is a large bony fragment retained by the tendon. The distal pulley prevents retraction beyond the middle phalanx. We are reporting a case with brief review of literatures.

Glomus Tumor*

PURPOSE: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of etched microgrooves on the hydrophilicity of Ti and osteoblast responses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Microgrooves were applied on Ti to have 15 and 60 micrometer width, and 3.5 and 10 micrometer depth by photolithography, respectively. Further acid etching was applied to create Ti surfaces with etched microgrooves. Both smooth- and acid-etched Ti were used as the controls. The hydrophilicity of Ti was analyzed by determining contact angles. Cell proliferation and osteogenic activity of MC3T3 mouse preosteoblasts were analyzed by bromodeoxyuridine assay and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity test, respectively. One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used for statistics. RESULTS: Etched microgrooves significantly increased the hydrophilicity of Ti compared to the smooth Ti. 60 micrometer-wide etched microgrooves significantly enhanced cell proliferation, whereas the osteogenic activity showed statistically non-significant differences between groups. Result of the osteogenic activity significantly correlated with those of hydrophilicity and cell proliferation. Hydrophilicity was determined to be an influential factor on osteogenic activity. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that increase in hydrophilicity of Ti caused by etched microgrooves acts as an influential factor on osteogenic activity. However, statistically non-significant increase in the ALP activity suggests further investigation.
