3.Effect of etched microgrooves on hydrophilicity of titanium and osteoblast responses: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of etched microgrooves on the hydrophilicity of Ti and osteoblast responses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Microgrooves were applied on Ti to have 15 and 60 micrometer width, and 3.5 and 10 micrometer depth by photolithography, respectively. Further acid etching was applied to create Ti surfaces with etched microgrooves. Both smooth- and acid-etched Ti were used as the controls. The hydrophilicity of Ti was analyzed by determining contact angles. Cell proliferation and osteogenic activity of MC3T3 mouse preosteoblasts were analyzed by bromodeoxyuridine assay and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity test, respectively. One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used for statistics. RESULTS: Etched microgrooves significantly increased the hydrophilicity of Ti compared to the smooth Ti. 60 micrometer-wide etched microgrooves significantly enhanced cell proliferation, whereas the osteogenic activity showed statistically non-significant differences between groups. Result of the osteogenic activity significantly correlated with those of hydrophilicity and cell proliferation. Hydrophilicity was determined to be an influential factor on osteogenic activity. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that increase in hydrophilicity of Ti caused by etched microgrooves acts as an influential factor on osteogenic activity. However, statistically non-significant increase in the ALP activity suggests further investigation.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease with multisystemic involvement, has been reported to be associated with a number of gastrointestinal complications. But pancreatitis is an unusual complication of SLE, occuring in only 3-4% of lupus cohort. Multiple mechanisms contributing to pancreatitis associated with SLE have been demonstrated which include vasculitis, necrotizing pancreatitis, corticosteroid administration, and vascular thrombosis. We experienced a case of pancreatitis associated with SLE in a 14-year-old girl. The cause of pancreatitis may be related secondarily to vascular thrombosis, since there were several clinical and laboratory findings suggesting thromboembolic phenomena, including false-positive test for syphilis, prologation of PT/aPTT, and pulmonary embolism.

9.Factors Associated with Colorectal Cancer Screening of Blue-Color Workers.

PURPOSE: Even though the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased in Korea, the colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) is lower than that of other cancer screenings. The purpose of this study was to identify CRCS rate and to predict factors in blue-color workers. METHODS: A descriptive survey design was employed. Data were collected with 327 workers, recruited from 32 companies, aged 40 and over using questionnaire from August 2010 to January 2011. Collected information included CRCS, demographic characteristics, job characteristics, health behaviors, and interpersonal relationship. The definition of CRCS included fecal occult blood test (FOBT), colonoscopy, or double contrast barium enema (DCBE). RESULTS: Among 94 workers receiving CRCS, workers having FOBT were 37, colonoscopy were 28, and DCBE was 6 in the past. Workers who aged over 50 (OR=2.30, 95% CI=1.11-4.77), middle school educated (OR=0.30, 95% CI=0.14-0.65), less working hours (OR=0.98, 95% CI=0.96-0.99), and had family members who carried out regular cancer screening (OR=1.89, 95% CI=1.01-3.55) were more likely to perform CRCS. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the information and notice about CRCS to increase screening uptake, providing the accessible screening method, and involving company administrators or health managers might be useful to increase the CRCS rate in workers.
