1.Analysis of Soft Tissue Changes after Genioplasty in Skeletal Class III Dentofacial Deformity.
Yonsei Medical Journal 2009;50(6):814-817
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to measure the anteroinferior changes and the degree of vertical changes to facilitate the prediction of treatment outcome in patients undergoing genioplasty only, genioplasty with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO), genioplasty, or BSSRO and Lefort I osteotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serial cephalometry was performed on 25 patients at 1-year follow-up after genioplasty, to assess skeletal changes and relapse. Surgery was performed using conventional techniques. RESULTS: The mean ratio was 0.9 : 1 of soft tissue to skeletal movement at pogonion, but the average difference between hard and soft tissue was large; thus, the prediction of anteroposterior soft tissue changes was quite inaccurate. CONCLUSION: We observed a good correlation between the amount of hard versus soft tissue change with surgery in the horizontal direction, but a poor correlation in the vertical plane.

Mycobiology 2002;30(2):88-92
Rehmannia glutinosa is a perennial medicinal plant belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae with more than 300 species known in the world, especially in temperate regions. Its roots have been used widely in Korea for medicinal purposes. However, it is commonly infected by various pathogens during storage, causing great damage to the roots, and impedes the intensive farming of the crop. Therefore, an attempt has been made to isolate and screen a resistance gene against the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum using differential display. We treated salicylic acid (SA), and isolated a resistance gene that responds to SA. As a result, we found that SA was involved in plant defense mechanism in pathogenicity tests with SA treated and non-treted plants, and we isolated a partial PR-la gene through differential display polymerase chain reaction (DD-PCR) method.

5.Diastolic Time Intervals and Systolic Time Intervals in Hypertensive Patients.

Korean Circulation Journal 1984;14(1):103-109
For many years, interest in cardiac function has primarily centered around the systolic pump performance of the left ventricle. it is now recognized, however, that diastolic abnormalities may be just as important in the pathophysiology of certain cardiac disease states. To examine the left ventricular abnormalities (especially diastolic events) in hypertension, diastolic and systolic time intervals were measured from simultaneous high-speed recordings of a phonocardiogram, ECGs, apexcardiogram, echocardiogram and external carotid pulse in 35 hypertensive patients and were compared with those in 15 normal subjects. The hypertensive patients showed significantly prolonged preejection period (PEP) and shortened ejection time (ET), compared to those in normal control subjects (p<0.005, p<0.05 respectively). The PEP/ET ratio too was different from the control subjects in hypertensive patients (0.335+/-0.050 vs 0.422+/-0.666; p<0.005). The isovolumic relaxation time (IVRT) was increased to 81.3+/-15.0 msec, which was significantly longer (p<0.005) than in normal subjects (56.7+/-10.7 msec), in patients with hypertension. The active filling period (AFP) was also prolonged. In patients with hypertension there was no significant difference in rapid filling period and slow filling period compared with those in normal subjects. It is likely that in hypertensive patients the alterations of diastolic time intervals, reflecting disorders in elasticity and compliance, may occur in conjunction with abnormal systolic events.

Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases 2001;50(2):258-264
A 26-year-old man with a one-year history of asthma and sinusitis presented with bilateral pleural effusions, patch basilar infiltrates on a chest x-ray and a pericardial effusion on an echocardiogram. The peripheral blood showed marked eosinophilia. An obstructive pattern was also observed during the pulmonary fuction test, which was responsive to bronchodilator inhalation. Nerve conduction studies showed right sural neuropathy. Thoracentesis yielded an acidotic exudative effusion with low glucose, low C3 and eosinophilia. An open lung biopsy revealed an eosinophilic interstitial pneumonitis associated with a necrotizing eosinophilic vasculitis, and granulomatous inflammation foci. In the literature, pleural effusions were reported in 29 percent of Churg-Strauss patients, but the number of effusions was low and their characteristics have not been well described. This report describes the characteristic findings of pleural fluid and its histologic features in a case of classical Churg-Strauss syndrome.

PURPOSE: To develop end-of-life care training programs for nurses who provide in a tertiary hospital, we examined the mediating effects of empathy and resilience on the relationship between their stress and job performance. METHODS: This study was conducted with 218 participants at a hospital in B city in South Korea from August 15 through August 30, 2017. Data collected from the participants were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression using the IBM SPSS/WIN 21.0 software. RESULTS: Terminal care stress was found to be negatively correlated with empathy competence (r=−0.345, P < 0.001), resilience (r=−0.223, P=0.001) and terminal care performance (r=−0.260, P < 0.001), whereas empathy (r=0.467, P < 0.001) and resilience (r=0.358, P < 0.001) were positively correlated with terminal care performance. Empathy had a complete mediating effect (β=0.409, P < 0.001) on the relationship between terminal care stress and performance, and resilience a partial mediating effect (β=0.294, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Based on the findings of this study, development of training programs with a focus on empathy and resilience are highly recommended to improve job performance of nurses who provide terminal care in a tertiary hospital.
