1.A study on the Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygenation Combined with the Drug Administration in the Treatment of CO poisoning.
Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1973;6(1):71-76
1)The oxygen consumption was studied with albino rate under normal environment after they were given Cytochrome C intravenously (10mg/kg). The consumption was 74.6cc/kg min. with that of control, 75.4cc/kg. min. The difference of the consumptions was not statistically significant. However, under 0.5% CO environment, the oxygen consumption of the Cytochrome C treated rats (62.5cc/kg min) was significantly greater than the control(42.1cc/kg min.) 2) The recovery time of rat acutely poisoned by 1% CO was studied. The recovery time of the Cytochirome C treated group was 37.2 minutes and in control group it was 52.2 minutes. Also significant difference of fatality was noted between the treated group(21.8%) and the untreated group(49.7%). 3) The combined effects of the hyperbaric oxygenation (100% O2 at atmospheric pressures) and the Cytochrome C administration was compared with the effect the simple hyperbaric oxygenation. There was no significant difference of recovery time between the experimental group while the fatality of the experiment group was lower than control group.

2.An Experimental Study on the design of the thermister thermometer.
Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1973;6(1):65-70
The study in the fild of medical instrument has been out of the interest by any the life scinetist in Korea. Especially the recent developments in the medical electromics are remarkable one. Authors planned this study to ascertain the possibility of setting up the thermistor thermometer with available accessories of demetic products including some specific foreign assembly parts. By proper use of the thermistor as one of the wheatstone bridge, we could detect the resistance variations due to the environmental temperature variance. The intensive care for the bridge circuit and compensation scheme was required. The calibration procedure adopted here makes it possible to read the current as the temperature. The temperature range was determined by the examination and construction of the graph of the resistance-temperature, the reduction of excessive current and self-heating of the thermistor were made. Renovation in response-velocity was under taken too. This electronic thermometer was designed and assembled by the circuitry developed in accordance with the maximum availability of domestic products with some foreign-made parts. The result of our experiment showed very stable function and proved to be the most promising item in the actual application as long as the thermistor is concerned.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1995;29(1):106-109
Holoprosencephaly, a grave malformation during cleavage phase of brain development, occurs in association with a variety of clinical syndrome including chromosomal aberration. Among chromosomal anomalies trisomy syndromes, particularly trisomy 18, are often associated with holoprosencephaly. Triploidy with holoprosencephaly had also been described. We report an autopsy case of incomplete triploidy with abnormal sex chromosome, i.e., 63, XXY. Our case showed a marked intrauterine growth retardation, and postmortem examination revealed alobar holoprosencephaly, hypotelorism, bilateral cleft palates and lips, flat nose, microstomia, lowset ears, congenital heart disease and cystic kidney. The brain was microcephalic 5 x 6 cm and was of pancake shape. there was a large dorsal cyst. Olfactory tracts and bulbs were absent. The brain surface was smooth, and only suggestive hippocampal fissure was noted. The basal ganglia and thalami were fused in midline and the aqueductal origin was exposed. The brain stem and cerebellum were unremarkable. Repeated karyotypings revealed 63,XXY consistently. All 21 chromosomes showed trisomy except for D group. The sex chromosome was XXY, and the genital tract and gonad were those of female.

Pulmonary agenesis is a very rare anomaly. It is defined as total absence of the pulmonary parenchyma, vascular structures, and bronchi beyond the carina. We experienced a case of right pulmonary agenesis in association with other congenital defects who died at 1 day of age. The other defects included: esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, cardiac malformation, anal atresia and a malformed left thumb. The cardiac malformations were a type of Pentalogy of Fallot, composed of right ventricular hypertrophy, ventricular septal defect, an overiding of aorta, pulmonary atresia, and an atrial septal defect. Hand roentgenograms of the malformed left thumb showed an unarticulated metacarpopharyngeal joint. This unique combination of anomalies is extremely rare.

Oriental liver fluke (Clonorchis sinensis) infection was surveyed among residents of Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea during the period of January 2001 to March 2002. Total 1,041 stool samples were collected from residents who visited Public Health Center and its branches in Hamyang-gun and examined using formalin-ether sedimentation method. The overall egg positive rate was 16%, male showing higher positive rate (21%) than female (10%). The age group of 30 to 50 years had the highest egg positive rate of C. sinensis from 20% to 22%. The positive examinees were treated with praziquantel and educated individually to prevent reinfection. Egg positive rate in this area was decreased when compared with results recorded in the past, however, still remained more than 10%. This study suggests that periodic examination, treatment as well as education of residents should be continued and systematized.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1995;29(2):197-204
Morphological changes of hepatic microcirculation, especially in the peribiliary plexus, in cirrhotic livers of rats induced by repeated intraperitoneal injections of N-diethyinitrosamine (DEN) (100mg/kg/week) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Control rats were treated with saline. The livers were perfused with saline and injected with methyl-methacrylated resin (Mercox CL-2B) through the thoracic aorta. Diffuse nodular changes mimicking human cirrhosis were seen in the livers six weeks after injections of DEN. The cirrhotic livers showed an increase of vascular channels composed mainly of venous branches around the regenerating nodules and increased arterioloportal anastonloses. Peribiliary plexi of the cirrhotic livers had more vessels than those of the controls. Many dilated veins and ramificating portal vein branches were also Present. Direct connections between peribiliary plexi and sinusoids or between peribiliary plexi and portal veins were increased in the cirrhotic liver. These results suggest that the peribiliary plexi in experimentally induced cirrhotic liver might play a role in a collateral circulation under a state of portal hypertension.

Korean Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 1999;42(9):2122-2125
Fetal bilateral renal agenesis is a lethal congenital anomaly. An early and reliable prenatal diagnosis is extremely important as it may offer options for pregnancy termination as early as possible. The criteria for the ultrasonographic diagnosis of bilateral renal agenesis are severe oligohydramnios, nonvisualization of the bladder, and the empty renal fossa. However, severe oligohydramnios makes it difficult to diagnose the disease because of poor sonographic resolution. We present two cases of bilateral renal agenesis, one is diagnosed by ultrasonography after amnioinfusion at 24 weeks gestation, the other is diagnosed postnatally after term delivery.
