In order to investigate the occurrence characteristics of cancer in terms of industry in Kwangju-Chonnam area, medical utilization records of industrial medical insurance corporations during the period of 1987 to 1988 were reviewed for the identification of neoplastic disease. The cases obtained from the medical records were followed up for the verification and to get additional information. Standardized incidence data were compared by occupational characteristics. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to analyze the difference of incidence or distribution of cancer as a whole or of some selected cancer. Total cases of cancer identified were 242 during the study period. Annual incidence rate was calculated as 123.1 per 100,000 person. The frequent types of cancer were cancers of stomach, liver, lung, colon and rectum, bladder and lymphoma in descending order. Employees of mine and other sand handling industries showed significantly higher risks for cancer of stomach and cancer as a whole. Employees of the transportation industry showed the higher risk for cancer of liver. Workers in small-sized industry (< or = 100) had a higher risk for cancer than who in large-sized industry (>100). These findings suggested the effect of occupational environmental exposure to cancer development.

Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatric Association 2001;40(3):477-486
OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to evaluate the abnormalities in eating attitude and the correlations between ego-identity and self-esteem among the urban high school girls. METHODS: Four hundred and thirty-six high school girls were investigated by using Eating Attitude Test for Korean Adolescent(EAT-26), Korean Adolescent Ego-identity Scale(KA-EIS) and Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scales(SES). According to the score of EAT-26KA, the high risk group was identified. We compared weight, height, body mass index(BMI), KA-EIS and SES between the high risk group and the control group. According to BMI, we identified a underweight, normal weight, and overweight group among subjects, and then we compared weight, height, EAT-26KA, KA-EIS, and SES among the three groups. RESULTS: By EAT-26KA scores, 10.3% of girls had abnormal eating attitude and were considered as the high risk group for eating disorder. By BMI, 3.7%(N=16) of girls was overweight(BMI>25), 69.7%(N=304) was normal weight, and 26.6%(N=116) was underweight(BMI<19). The high risk group showed lower SES scores and 'self receptiveness' of KA-EIS than the control group. The overweight group showed higher EAT-26KA scores than other two groups. There were no significant differences in SES and KA-EIS among the three groups. KA-EIS was positively related to SES, and EAT-26KA was negatively related to SES. CONCLUSION: The distribution rate of the high risk group for eating disorder is 10.3%, and the high risk group has low self-esteem and is poor in self-receptiveness. The overweight group is more likely to have higher EAT-26KA scores than other two groups. Therefore, it is useful to educate adolescents for the healthy eating behaviors and to provide them with the programs which promote the self-esteem and self-receptiveness.

BACKGROUND: It is not known with certainty whether patients with persistently positive sputum smear results who have also had negative sputum culture results require prolongation of treatment for tuberculosis in order to avoid an increased risk of eventual relapse. The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively describe the treatment characteristics and evaluate the appropriate duration of treatment in these patients. METHODS: Sixty of 69 patients with sputum smear positive and culture negative tests at 5 months after first line anti-tuberculous chemotherapy from 2002 to 2003 were retrospectively analyzed. Exclusion criteria included incomplete treatment or resistance to rifampicin or two additional antibiotics, as determined by a drug susceptibility test (DST). RESULTS: Smear conversion of the study subjects was observed after 8.3+/-2.3 months treatment, and the patients were culture negative after 2.0+/-0.8 months. The relapse rates of the study subjects were 3.8, 10.0, and 25.8% after 1, 2, and 5 years of anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy, respectively. The relapse rates were not significantly affected by a series of risk factors such as age, sex, presence of diabetes, a sputum culture examination after 2 months treatment, previous treatment history, chest radiograph, and duration of the treatment (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Regimen change is not required for patients with persistent smear positive but culture negative tests in the fifth month for first line antituberculous treatment. However, a further study will be needed to clarify the high relapse rate in this specific group of patients.

Journal of Korean Society of Pediatric Endocrinology 2003;8(2):156-161
PURPOSE:There are some cases of false positive in neonatal screening for congenital adrenal hyperplasia. To understand its significance of the increased 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone(17 alpha-OHP) levels in the cases of positive result, we followed its levels during infancy. METHODS:From July 1997 to June 1998, totally 1,730 babies were screened for congenital adrenal hyperplasia(CAH) measuring 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone(17 alpha- OHP) using an enzyme immunoassay(EIA) on dried blood spots. In infants of positive result, the radioimmunoassay(RIA) was used measuring 17 alpha-OHP in serum. And we followed up the levels of 17 alpha-OHP during infancy. Cortisol and ACTH were also measured and followed up in the morning simultaneously. RESULTS:No CAH was detected during the study period. With the 13 ng/mL cutoff limit for 17 alpha-OHP before March 1998, the recall rate was 3.09%. With the 20 ng/mL cutoff limit after March 1998, the recall rate was decreased to 1.58%. Follow-up of the high levels of 17 alpha-OHP in positive cases showed a sharply decreased curve according to age. CONCLUSION: In clinically normal neonates, the high levels of 17 alpha-OHP at screening decreased continuously during infancy.
