Colonoscopy using flexible endoscope was performed on 792 patients. Results found the untypical ulcerous inflammation of the colon on 8 patients, among them 50% were acute inflammation. 62.5% had got ulcer on the whole of colon. 100% patients had got and bleeding diarrhoea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fever. Severe disease in acute form was treated hardly because of complications and high mortality. The condition must be diagnosed early and treated in time

Study on 335 cases underwent endoscopic biopsies. The results showed that: The rate of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in gastric ulcer patients that had clinical symptoms were 63%, highest in group of 31 to 50 years old. Inflammatory and ulcer lesions were in antropyloric area, and the rate of HP (+) was highest in this area. In comparison with endoscopic diagnosis, the highest ratio of HP was in gastric ulcer accompany with duodenal bulb ulcer, and lowest rate was in acute inflammation. There was no significant difference in infected frequency between male and female. However, moderate and severe infections (Hp2+, Hp3+) in men were more common than those in women

Stomach carcinoma is more common disease in korea than western contries. The reported ultrasonographicfindings of gastric carcinoma were thickening of gastric wall and “pseudokidney” sign. The auther analizedultrasonographic findings of 101 cases with gastric carcinoma who were performed ultrasonography and gastroscopyat Kyung Hee Universtiy Hospital from Oct. 1982 to Oct. 1985. The results were as followings; 1. Types of gastriccarcinoma were consisted with infiltrative type 68 cases, infiltrative type with ulceration 16 cases, polypoidtype with ulceration 1 cases, infiltrative and polypoid type 4 cases, linities plastica type 3 cases, lcerativetype 1 case and polypoid type 1 case. 2. Extent of the lesions were in body and antrum 45 cases, entire stomach 18cases, antrum 18 cases, body 12 cases, body and fundus 6 cases. 3. Ultrasonography was useful in demonstrating theextent of the tumor and the presence of materials elsewhere in abdoment.

The therapeutie efficacy of ranitidine was evaluated itn 48 in- and out- patients with endoscopically diagnosed 18 cases of gaetric ulcer and 30 casea of ducnienal ulcer. In the open study, every pabenta was treated with ranitidine 150 mg b.i.d. for 4 weeks, and waa followed up by gastroscopy after 4 weeks of the treatment. The reeults obtained were summarized as follows; 1) 15 out of 18 cases (83. 3%) of gastric ulcers and 26 out of 30 cases (86. 7%) of duodenal ulcers had been completely healed up in 4 weeks. 2) There was a significant relationship between healing of ulcer and the relief of symptoms (x =6.12, P<0.005).3) There were no significant untoward reactions, efther subjective or objective, to the administration of the drug, except one case of severe epigastic discomfort. In conclusion ranitidine appears to be fairy effective and safe for the treatment of patient with peptic ulcr diseases.

A new method for combining ultrasonography snd endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), was developed to improve the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound by direct image of the target lesion via the gastrointestinal lumen. EUS has the unique ability to provide clear sonographic images of the wall structure of the stomach. This capability can be ultilized in assessing the depth of cancer invasion of the stomach by identifying which layer the ultrasonographic change extends to. However, the depressed types of early gastric cancer(EGC) are often accompanied by ulcerative change in the tumor foci. And the ultrasonographic picture is also influenced by the ulcerative change. AIMS: In this paper we have investigated the detection rate of each H. pylori test in the antrum and in the body for patients with nonulcer dyspepsia (NUD), duodenal ulcer (DU), benign gastric ulcer (BGU), and stomach cancer. In addition, we examined whether or not there is any relationship between the decrease of H. pylori detection rate and intestinal metaplasia in the antrum. METHODS: Three different test methods for identifying H. pylori infection-CLOtest, Gram stain, H&E stain-were taken in the antrum and in the body. RESULTS: 1) The detection rates of CLOtest, Gram stain, and H&E stain for NUD group were 88%, 75%, and 64% (mean: 76%) in the antrum, and 89%, 78%, and 67% (mean: 78%) in the body, respectively, and those of DU group were 95%, 95% and 81% (mean: 90%) in the antrum, and 97%, 87% and 64% (mean: 83%) in the body, respectively. Those of BGU group were 86%, 74%, 53% (mean: 71%) and 98%, 82%, 58% (mean: 79%), respectively, and those of stomach cancer group were 80%, 88%, 58% (mean: 75%) in the antrum, and 100%, 96%, 83% (mean: 93%) in the body, respectively. The B/A detection ratio which means the ratio of mean H. pylori detection rate of body to that of antrum was 1.03 in NUD, 0.93 in DU, 1.11 in BGU, and 1.24 in stomach cancer group. 2) The rate of intestinal metaplasia in the antrum was 12% for NUD, and 15% for DU group. Those of BGU and stomach cancer group were 47% and 72%, respectively. 3) The correlation etween B/A detection ratio and intestinal metaplasia in the antrum was good (correlation coefficient(r)=0.93). CONCLUSIONS: The result that body is more adequate for H. pylori detection in BGU and stomach cancer patients rather than antrum can be explained by the high rate of intestinal metaplasia in the antrum which is hostile surrounding for H. pylori.

The pseudolymphoma of the stomach is known to be a benign porliferation of lymphoid tissue, which can bemistaken hostoloigcally for malignant lymphoma. The etiology of pseudolymphoma is controversial, but it B believedto be a manifestation of chronic inflammatory process. Authors present 3 cases of gastric lymphoma. Impresssionsof upper gastrointestual series were as follows; lymphoma or chronic gastritis in one case, ulcerative carcinomain another case and early gastric carcinoma in the other case. Initial endoscopic findings suggested infiltratingcarcinoma, ulcerative carcinoma and two benign gastric ulcers, respectively. One case was associated wtih earlygastric carcinoma.
