PURPOSE: Stigma negatively affects individuals as well as entire families; therefore, it is necessary to understand "family stigma" in order to reduce the social and emotional distress of families suffering from stigma and prevent the resulting avoidance of social support and treatment. Thus, this study clarifies the concept of "family stigma" by using concept analysis method. METHODS: In order to analyze the concept, we reviewed the relevant literatures. Characteristics that appeared repeatedly throughout the literature were noted and categorized. RESULTS: Three key defining attributes were identified: (a) others' negative perceptions, attitudes, emotions, and avoidant behaviors toward a family, because of the unusualness of the family, including the negative situations, events, behaviors, problems or diseases associated with that family, or because of the unordinary characteristics or structures of that family; (b) others' belief that the unusualness of the family is somehow harmful, dangerous, unhealthy, capable of affecting them negatively, or different from general social norms; and (c) others' belief that the family members are directly or indirectly contaminated by the problematic family member, so that every family member is also considered as harmful, dangerous, unhealthy, capable of having a negative effect on others, or different from general social norms. CONCLUSION: The results of this study are expected not only to guide future research but also to enhance family care in nursing practice.

PURPOSE: This study is done to investigate the attitudes of teachers toward mental illness and to provide appropriate information about mental illness. METHODS: The participants were 228 teachers recruited from 15 elementary schools in the National Capital region and B metropolitan city. Data were collected from October to December, 2013 and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and Scheffee test with SPSS 18.0. RESULTS: Neutral attitudes (77.4+/-7.79) toward mental illness were shown among the teachers. A negative attitude for stereotyping (23.2+/-6.08), a positive attitude for optimism (19.3+/-3.01) and neutral attitudes for coping (19.3+/-1.92) and understanding (15.6 +/-3.05) were revealed. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that elementary school teachers have neutral attitudes towards mental illness which is closely related to the experience of learning about mental illness. Thus, when teachers learn about mental illness they can understand and guide children who have unusual behaviors.

PURPOSE: This study was done to explore communication between nurses during preceptorship. METHODS: A qualitative study, using content analysis was conducted. Semistructured interviews were held with 10 nurses working in urban hospitals. RESULTS: A total of 226 significant statements were selected from the data and classified into 4 categories and 23 subcategories. Communication experiences of new nurses' own performance were responses to reproach - acceptance and apology, and unresponsiveness due to feeling small and uncomfortable; responses to questions - misanswer; responses to directions - unconditional acceptance. Communication experiences of new nurses' performance by nurse preceptors were kindness, stigmatization, talking behind one's back, criticism and reproach, impolite words, and emotional expression. Communication experiences of nurse preceptors's own performance were directives, sympathy, reproach, unkindness, authoritative strictness, and nonverbal expression: being cold, and lessening of tension. Communication experiences of nurse preceptors' performance by new nurses were response to criticism - recognition and apology for mistakes, evasion of responsibility, and excuses; responses to explanations-active acceptance, and difficulty with communication due to lack of comprehension. CONCLUSION: These results provide deep understanding of nurses' communication during preceptorship and should help in developing comprehensive education programs for preceptor nurses and new nurses.

PURPOSE: With the implementation of the Act on Life Sustaining Treatment, hospice-palliative care will be extended to non-cancer diseases including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). However, there are concerns about negative perceptions and prejudice toward AIDS patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related with willingness to volunteer (WV) for patients with end-stage AIDS among hospice volunteers. METHODS: Participants were 326 hospice volunteers from 19 institutions. A self-administered questionnaire was employed to investigate the participants' WV for end-stage AIDS patients, and the questions were answered using an 11-point rating scale. Demographics, volunteer activity, satisfaction with hospice volunteering, knowledge of AIDS, and attitudes towards AIDS patients (i.e., fear AIDS patients, negative attitude towards AIDS patients, personal stigmatization and stigmatizing attitude) were also investigated. A multiple regression analysis was performed to examine factors associated with WV for patients with end-stage AIDS. RESULTS: WV for patients with end-stage AIDS was 2.82 points lower than that for cancer patients (P < 0.001). The multiple regression analysis showed that the higher the level of satisfaction with hospice volunteering (P=0.002) and the lower the level of “personal stigmatization” (P < 0.001), participants showed greater WV for end-stage AIDS patients. CONCLUSION: The level of satisfaction with hospice volunteering and “personal stigmatization” were factors associated with participants' WV for patients with end-stage AIDS.

PURPOSE: Epilepsy, a typical chronic disease, may cause a high level of psychosocial difficulties for all family members, including stigmatization, stress, marital problems, poor self esteem and restriction of social activities. The present study focuses on how children with epilepsy affect their families' functioning. METHODS: The subjects were 30 parents of epileptic children. The Feetham Family Function Survey(FFFS) was used to obtain data concerning the parents' perceived family functioning. Data were analyzed with SPSS 8.0 program using Pearson correlation coefficient, Oneway ANOVA, and multiple range test(Scheffe test). RESULTS: The results of analysis showed slightly low score of the amount of the activity, high importance score and discrepant score, which mean a low satisfaction level. There was no significant correlation between most demographic variables of the family and the family functioning. Oneway ANOVA showed the differences of the discrepant score according to the number of the antiepileptic drugs, the frequency of the seizure, the combined disabilities, and the ways in which families with epileptic children raised money for hospital expenses. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that the expected level and the important score might be higher than the achieved level of the family functioning, which indicates the low satisfaction in the families with epileptic children. The results also suggest that the discrepant score in the families with epileptic children may be influenced by some treatment-related characteristics of the epileptic children such as the frequency of the seizure, the number of the antiepileptic drugs, the combined disabilities and the ways in which families with epileptic children raised money for hospital expenses.

PURPOSE: This study was done to develop a internalized stigma reducing program based on cognitive-behavioral therapy and appropriate for patients with schizophrenia and to evaluate its effectiveness. METHODS: The study design was a mixed method research. Qualitative study, 13 patients with schizophrenia who had experience in overcoming stigma were purposively chosen for interviews and data were analyzed using Giorgi method. Quantitative study, 64 patients with schizophrenia (experimental group=32, control group=32) were recruited. The cognitive-behavioral therapy-based program for reducing internalized stigma in patients with schizophrenia was provided for 8 weeks (12 sessions). Data were collected from June. 20, 2013 to Feb. 14, 2014. Quantitative data were analyzed using χ²-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS program. RESULTS: Qualitative results, from the experience of coping with stigma in patients with schizophrenia seventeen themes and five themes-clusters were drawn up. Quantitative results showed that internalized stigma, self-esteem, mental health recovery and quality of life were significantly better in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Study findings indicate that this program for reducing internalized stigma in patients with schizophrenia is effective and can be recommended as a rehabilitation program intervention to help patients with schizophrenia to cope with internalized stigma.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate providers' perspectives on current challenges in implementing a program for prevention and management of childhood obesity and adoption of mobile phone as a potential solution of leveraging multimodal delivery and support in a school setting. METHODS: The qualitative data were collected through face-to-face in-depth interviews with 23 elementary-school teachers, 6 pediatricians, and 6 dieticians from community health centers and analyzed using a qualitative research methodology. RESULTS: Current challenges and potential solutions of obesity-prevention and -management program for obesity program for elementary school children were deduced as two themes each. Lack of tailored intervention due to limited recipient motivation, lack of individualized behavioral intervention, and different environmental conditions can be solvable by mobile technology-based personalized intervention which brings about interactive recipient participation, customized behavioral intervention, and ubiquitous accessibility. Lack of sustainable management due to stigmatization, limited interactions between program providers and inconsistent administrative support can be handled by multimodal support based on school setting using mobile platform providing education of health promoting behaviors toward larger scale and interactive networking between program participants, and minimizing administrative burden. CONCLUSIONS: Adoption of mobile-based health management program may overcome current limitations of child obesity program such as lack of tailored intervention and sustainable management via personalized intervention and multimodal supports although some concerns such as increased screen time need to be carefully considered in a further study.
