Anorexia nervosa is characterized by distortion of body image and profound weight loss due to self starvation. So, the patients are easily diagnosed with history and interview. We experienced a patient who had suffered for prolonged vomiting and profound weight loss without definite distorted body image, but had accompanied by autonomic dysfunction. Thus, we report a case with a brief review of literatures.

3.A Case of Hypoglycemia following Cesarean Section .

Little has been reported concerning post-operative hypoglycemia in previously asymptomatic individuals. Post-operative hypoglycemic coma is one of the most perplexing problems and must be differentiated from other conditions accompaning coma. We experienced a case of hypoglycemia following emergency cesarean section in primigravida with cephalopelvic disproportion on the fourth post operative day. The comatous state appeared abruptly and developed repeatedly. The causes of post-hypoglycemic coma are discussed and the prolonged starvation before and after operation was suspected to be the cause of coma.

Aging is a very complex process caused by the accumulation of various factors due to the gradual failure of cellular maintenance. Recent studies have shown that autophagy reduces the stress responses induced by starvation, reactive oxygen species, and the accumulation of intracellular proteins and organelles through cytoprotection, clearance of damaged mitochondria, and lysosomal degradation. Here, we summarize our current understanding of the relationship between autophagy and the aging process.

6.FGF21 as a Stress Hormone: The Roles of FGF21 in Stress Adaptation and the Treatment of Metabolic Diseases.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is an endocrine hormone that is primarily expressed in the liver and exerts beneficial effects on obesity and related metabolic diseases. In addition to its remarkable pharmacologic actions, the physiological roles of FGF21 include the maintenance of energy homeostasis in the body in conditions of metabolic or environmental stress. The expression of FGF21 is induced in multiple organs in response to diverse physiological or pathological stressors, such as starvation, nutrient excess, autophagy deficiency, mitochondrial stress, exercise, and cold exposure. Thus, the FGF21 induction caused by stress plays an important role in adaptive response to these stimuli. Here, we highlight our current understanding of the functional importance of the induction of FGF21 by diverse stressors as a feedback mechanism that prevents excessive stress.

7.Effect of Preoperative Fasting Time on Blood Glucose Concentrations in Children.

BACKGROUND: The influence of preoperative starvation on blood glucose concentrations in children remains controversal. This period varies from 6 to 12 hr or even more, in different institutions. A surgical operation causes a rise in the blood glucose concentration, and this increased concentration returns to normal within 8 to 12 hr. The purpose of the present study was to investigate blood glucose concentra tions in children undergoing elective surgery who fasted before anesthesia. METHODS: One hundred sixty-five healthy children, aged less than 7 yr, and scheduled for elective minor surgery were included in the study. Blood samples were collected before induction of anesthesia, after induction of anesthesia and at the recovery room. The correlation between the period of starvation and the blood glucose concentration was estimated and hypoglycaemia was defined as a blood glucose concentration less than 40 mg%. RESULTS: The duration of starvation ranged from 10 to 14 hr in the majority of the patients (66.7%). The duration of starvation beyond 14 hr was 7.8%. No significant correlations were obtained between preoperative blood glucose concentrations and duration of starvation. None of the patients were hypoglycaemia before surgery. The intraoperative and postoperative blood glucose concentrations were significantly higher than the preoperative blood glucose concentration. CONCLUSIONS: In children less than 7 yr, blood glucose concentrations were not influenced by duration of starvation within a 14 time period.

8.Influence of Compendium of Materia Medica on the Materia Medica in the late period of the Chosun Dynasty.

In this paper, I investigated the influence of Compendium of Materia Medica (CM) on Records for Rural Life of Chosun Gentlemen (RRC), and refuted Miki Sakae's opinion, CM did not have much impact on the Materia Medica in the late period of the Chosun Dynasty. When Li Shizhen published CM, it resulted in a shift of mainstream of Materia Medica in Eastern Asia from Classified Emergency Materia Medica to CM and a new categorizing system of Materia Medica by CM led to the division of Materia Medica into medicine and natural history. It is obvious that doctors of the Chosun Dynasty also adopted the latest achievements of Materia Medica by CM, but so far there have been few studies to clarify this. Seo yugu was a scholar of the Realist School of Confucianism during the late period of the Chosun Dynasty, and RRC is his representative work. RRC is a massive encyclopedia of natural history that covers vast areas of science from agriculture, floriculture, writing and drawing, architecture, diet, and medicine, among others which absorbed the achievements of CM, the best Materia Medica book at that time. Miki Sakae also highly regarded the encyclopedic knowledge of RRC, but devalued the results of Materia Medica. He only described a part of RRC's Materia Medica, nurturing volume, on the view of life nurturing and mentioned that it had been strongly influenced by China. According to this study, a large portion of RRC, especially regarding Materia Medica, depends on CM. Seo yugu had accepted the categorizing system and new medicinal information of CM, at the same time he modified the categorizing system of CM practically by the subject of each volume of RRC. We can find many quotations of CM except the nurturing volume, but other books, Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine, Materia Medica for Relief of Famines are also quoted. Furthermore, Seo yugu emphasized the differences of natural environments between Chosun and China, and specified the editing criteria, "to be useful in Chosun." This is the most obvious evidence that Materia Medica of Chosun had not remained in the framework of Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine which succeeded Classified Emergency Materia Medica, but had been developed into medicine and natural history based on CM.

9.Korean Red Ginseng Tonic Extends Lifespan in D. melanogaster.

Aging is the single most important risk factor that increases susceptibility to many forms of diseases. As such, much effort has been put forward to elucidate the mechanisms behind the processes of aging and to discover novel compounds that retain antiaging activities. Korean red ginseng has been used for a variety of medical purposes in eastern countries for several thousands of years. It has been shown that Korean red ginseng affects a number of biological activities including, but not limited to, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-diabetic pathways. However, few studies have been performed to evaluate its anti-aging effects with an in vivo system. Here Drosophila melanogaster as an in vivo model organism demonstrates that Korean red ginseng tonic extends lifespan, increases resistance to starvation stress and prevents weight gain. This data suggest that Korean red ginseng may regulate organisms' metabolism in favor of extending lifespan.

10.The Statistical Analysis on Legal Autopsy Performed in Korea during 2012 Year.

This statistical analysis of 4,709 legal autopsies performed in Korea in 2012 was conducted to obtain primary data about and related variables. The analysis revealed the following: 1. Of the total number of deaths, men accounted for and women, 26.8%. Evidently, the number of deaths among men was more than twice that among women. 2. With respect to mode of death, 54.8% were recorded as unnatural deaths, 39.2% were natural deaths, and 6.0% had unknown causes. Of the 2,581 unnatural deaths, 44.8% were accidental deaths; 27.2%, suicidal; 17.5%, homicidal; and 10.3%, undetermined. 3. Of the total number of unnatural deaths, 43.0% were trauma-related deaths, for which falling down was the leading cause, accounting for 33.5% cases. Asphyxiation was accounted for 17.2%, among which the predominant cause was hanging (55.3%). Moreover, 12.5% of deaths were due to drowning; 11.5%, poisoning; 11.2%, thermal injuries; 2.7%, complications in medical procedures; and 0.3%, electrocution, starvation, or neglect. 4. Among 1,847 natural deaths, heart diseases accounted for 50.2% and vascular diseases accounted for 16.7%. 5. There were 207 cases of deaths among children under the age of 10, of which 94 were unnatural and 49 were homicidal deaths. Of all cases, 9.2% had an unknown cause of death, and of these 67.6%, were putrefied or skeletonized bodies.
