BACKGROUND: Natural killer (NK) cells are CD3 (-) CD14 (-) CD56 (+) lymphocytes. They play an important role in the body's innate immune response. They can induce spontaneous killing of cancer cells or virus-infected cells via the Fas/Fas ligand or the granzyme/perforin systems. The corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is an important regulator for the body's stress response. It promotes proliferation and migration of various cancer cells through the CRH type 1 receptor under stress, and also inhibits NK or T cell activity. However, the relationship of CRH and NK cell migration to the target has not been confirmed. Herein, we study the effect of CRH on NK cell migration. METHODS: We used the human NK cell line, NK-92MI, and tested the expression of CRH receptor type 1 on NK-92MI by RT-PCR. This was to examine the effect of CRH on tumor and NK cell migration, thus NK cells (NK-92MI) were incubated with or without CRH and then each CRH treated cell's migration ability compared to that of the CRH untreated group. RESULTS: We confirmed that CRH receptor type 1 is expressed in NK-92MI. CRH can decrease NK cell migration in a time-/dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: These data suggest CRH can inhibit NK cell migration to target cells.

2.Enhancement of Cell Migration by Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (CRH) in Human Gastric Cancer Cell Line, MKN-28.

BACKGROUND: Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (CRH), an important regulator of stress response, has a potent immunoregulatory effect with the ability to promote the growth of various cancer through CRH receptor type 1 under stress. Although the metastasized cancers through cell migration are more aggressive than the primary cancers, little is known about the effect of CRH on cell migration. Gastric cancer is prone to metastasize to other tissues and it is reported that gastric cancer is response to various stresses such as oxidative stress. Herein, we studied the relationship between CRH and gastric cancer cell migration. METHODS: We used gastric cancer cell line, MKN-28 and tested the CRH receptor type 1 expression on MKN-28 by RT-PCR. To examine the change in the ability of migration by CRH in MKN-28, cells were incubated with CRH and then migration ability was measured using a cell migration assay. RESULTS: We confirmed that CRH receptor type 1 was expressed in MKN-28 and HaCaT cells. The migration ability of MKN-28 cells was increased by CRH in a time-, dose- dependent manner. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that CRH increases migration ability in gastric cancer cell line and that CRH may be a critical regulator in the metastasis of gastric cancer cell.

3.Nutritional Status According to Sensitized Food Allergens in Children With Atopic Dermatitis.

PURPOSE: Food allergies can affect the growth and nutritional status of children with atopic dermatitis (AD). This study was conducted to determine the association between the number of sensitized food allergens and the growth and nutritional status of infants and young children with AD. METHODS: We studied 165 children with AD, aged 5 to 47 months, and who visited the Atopy Clinic of the Seoul Medical Center. We recorded the birth weight, time at which food weaning began, scoring of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index, eosinophil counts in peripheral blood, and total serum IgE and specific IgE to six major allergens (egg white, cow's milk, soybean, peanut, wheat, and fish). The height and weight for age and weight for height were converted to z-scores to evaluate their effects on growth and nutritional status. Specific IgE levels > or =0.7 kUA/L, measured via the CAP assay, were considered positive. RESULTS: As the number of sensitized food allergens increased, the mean z-scores of weight and height for age decreased (P=0.006 and 0.018, respectively). The number directly correlated with the SCORAD index (r=0.308), time at which food weaning began (r=0.332), eosinophil counts in peripheral blood (r=0.266), and total serum IgE (r=0.394). Inverse correlations were observed with the z-scores of weight for age (r=-0.358), height for age (r=-0.278), and weight for height (r=-0.224). CONCLUSIONS: A higher number of sensitized food allergens was associated with negative effects on the growth and nutritional status of infants and young children with AD. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of both growth and nutritional status, combined with adequate patient management, is crucial in pediatric AD patients presenting with numerous sensitized food allergies.

4.Actual Judgment of Criminal Responsibility as Seen Through the Criminal Psychiatric Examination of a Psychiatric Hospital

Objectives:
The purpose of this study was to compare the demographic, clinical, and criminal characteristics and legal judgments of criminal cases, in which psychiatric evaluation was requested, and to identify factors affecting criminal responsibility judgments.
Methods:
The medical records of 100 subjects that committed crimes and the judgment records of 51 subjects admitted to Yongin Mental Hospital from February 2005 to February 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. Psychiatric disorder groups were compared with respect to demographic, clinical, criminal characteristics, and legal judgments. Factors affecting criminal responsibility judgments were identified by comparing legal judgment groups.
Results:
Psychiatric history, criminal motivation, and criminal history differed significantly between psychiatric disorder groups. Differences between the opinions of the appraiser and courts regarding criminal responsibility were significantly dependent on psychiatric disorder type, and there was a consistent tendency according to the psychiatric disorders, but there was a difference of opinion between the two groups.
Conclusion
The findings of the current study suggest psychiatric diagnoses and symptoms such as psychotic symptoms and cognitive impairments that provoke crime can influence criminal responsibility judgments.
5.Exploring histological predictive biomarkers for immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy response in non–small cell lung cancer

Treatment challenges persist in advanced lung cancer despite the development of therapies beyond the traditional platinum-based chemotherapy. The early 2000s marked a shift to tyrosine kinase inhibitors targeting epidermal growth factor receptor, ushering in personalized genetic-based treatment. A further significant advance was the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), especially for non–small cell lung cancer. These target programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4, which enhanced the immune response against tumor cells. However, not all patients respond, and immune-related toxicities arise. This review emphasizes identifying biomarkers for ICI response prediction. While PD-L1 is a widely used, validated biomarker, its predictive accuracy is imperfect. Investigating tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, tertiary lymphoid structure, and emerging biomarkers such as high endothelial venule, Human leukocyte antigen class I, T-cell immunoreceptors with Ig and ITIM domains, and lymphocyte activation gene-3 counts is promising. Understanding and exploring additional predictive biomarkers for ICI response are crucial for enhancing patient stratification and overall care in lung cancer treatment.
6.Clinical Presentations and Causative Organisms in Children and Adolescents with Osteoarticular Infections: A Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: Osteoarticular infections in children and adolescents are important because it can cause functional compromise if appropriate treatment is delayed. Therefore, this study was designed to describe the clinical presentations and causative organisms of osteoarticular infections in children and adolescents in order to propose early diagnosis method and an appropriate empiric antimicrobial therapy. METHODS: Forty-two medical records were reviewed retrospectively, which were confirmed as osteomyelitis (OM) or septic arthritis (SA) at Department of Pediatrics or Orthopedic Surgery in patients under 18 years old of Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital from March 2008 to March 2015. RESULTS: We identified 21 cases of OM, 13 cases of SA and 8 cases of OM with SA. There were 31 males and 11 females and mean age was 7.1 years old. The most common symptoms were pain and tenderness of involved site. Major involved bones were femur (10 cases, 34.5%), tibia (7 cases, 24.1%) and major involved joints were hip (9 cases, 42.9%), and knee (5 cases, 23.8%). Increased serum C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were observed in 37 cases (88.1%) respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 40 cases among 42 cases and was used to demonstrate osteoarticular infections and other adjacent infections. Nine cases (23.7%) among 38 cases and 20 cases (50.0%) among 40 cases were positive in blood culture and infected site culture respectively. The most common causative organism was Staphylococcus aureus, which was represented in 22 cases (75.9%), of which nine cases (40.9%) were resistant to methicillin. CONCLUSIONS: S. aureus was the most common causative organism of osteoarticular infections in children and adolescents and the proportion of MRSA was high in this study. Therefore, we recommend vancomycin as the first empiric antimicrobial therapy and suggest that further study is necessary to elucidate an appropriate guideline for treatment which takes into account MRSA proportion.

7.Vaccine Evaluation Studies Performed in Korea from 2000 to 2014.

PURPOSE: Vaccine evaluation studies were initiated from 2000 by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to produce proper data about the safety and immunogenicity of vaccines. The purpose of this study was to review studies and reports on evaluation of vaccine such as immunogenicity, efficacy, effectiveness, safety and other related topics in order to find and analyze the data on the usefulness of each vaccine. METHODS: From 2000 to 2014, the project "The vaccine evaluation" had been performed by several researchers, and studies and reports of vaccine evaluation. We reviewed the results and outcomes of studies regarding the evaluation of vaccine's usefulness and analyzed the possibilities of applying these data for establishing vaccine policies. For each vaccine, data analysis and organization were done according to evaluation fields. RESULTS: A total of 83 studies were performed on vaccines from 2000 to 2014. For each vaccine, 8 studies were performed on BCG, 14 on DTaP/Td, 1 on poliovirus, 5 on Hib, 3 on pneumococcus, 11 on influenza, 3 on hepatitis A, 11 on MMR, 11 on varicella, and 16 on Japanese encephalitis. All studies were analyzed by the following evaluation area, such as safety, immunogenicity, seroprevalence, persistence of immunity, efficacy, effectiveness, vaccine evaluation methods, quality control product for vaccine, and others. CONCLUSIONS: Vaccine evaluation studies performed in Korea may be useful as references for establishing vaccination strategy and policy and could be used as baseline data for future studies on vaccine evaluation, vaccine policy establishment, and public/expert vaccine education in Korea.

8.Adenosine Deaminase 2 Deficiency Caused by Biallele Variants Including Splicing Variant: The First Case in Korea

Deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2) is an autoinflammatory disease caused by pathogenic variants of the ADA2 gene and has similar clinical features to polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). We, herein, report a case of DADA2 in Korea that was diagnosed in a patient with childhood-onset PAN. The patient had a truncal ataxia and facial palsy caused by thalamic infarction at 34 months of age. Livedo reticularis with Raynaud phenomenon and abdominal pain with fever were followed. Radiologic examination showed multiple infarctions in brain and kidney. She was diagnosed with PAN using skin biopsy and angiography. She had severe hemorrhagic strokes despite medical treatments. Her disease activity was controlled after adding a tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor. Molecular analysis revealed compound heterozygous pathogenic variants of ADA2 gene. This is the first case of DADA2 in Korea. Genetic analysis for ADA2 gene should be considered in patients with childhood-onset PAN.
9.The Prevalence and Incidence of Insomnia in Korea during 2005 to 2013

Objective:
The aim of this study was to estimate the progress of insomnia prevalence and incidence over the past several years. Also, this study compared survival rates between individuals with and without insomnia.
Methods:
The National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) from 2002–2013 was used for this study. Prevalent cases of insomnia were defined using ICD-10 codes F51.0 or G47.0, or a prescription of sedatives. Cox’s proportional hazard analysis was conducted to compare survival rates between insomnia patients and people without insomnia.
Results:
In 2013, there were 46,167 (5.78%) insomnia patients over 20 years old in this cohort. Insomnia was more common among women and the elderly. Annual incidence over the past several years remained steady but the prevalence increased. The survival of insomnia patients was lower than that of people without insomnia, and the hazard ratio for overall mortality was 1.702 (p<0.001).
Conclusion
This large-scale population-based cohort study provided current epidemiologic indicators of insomnia in the Korean general population.
10.Association Study between Tic Disorder and Dopamine D2 Receptor Gene Polymorphism in Korean Population.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether the Taq I A polymorphism of dopamine receptor D2 gene(DRD2) is associated with Tourette syndrome(TS) and chronic motor tic disorder(CMT) in Korean population. METHODS: DRD2 Taq I A RFLP genotyping was carried out with DNA extracted from blood samples of 75 patients with tic disorders(47 with TS and 28 with CMT) and 90 healthy subjects. Genotype and allelic frequencies for the DRD2 gene polymorphisms of the tic disorder group as a whole were compared to those of the control group. Separating the TS group, thereafter, the frequency of genotypes and alleles were compared to those of the controls. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that genotype and allele distributions for the DRD2 gene polymorphism in the tic disorder as a whole, TS, and control groups were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: No association was found for DRD2 gene, TS and CMT. The data suggest that DRD2 gene may not be a useful marker for the prediction of the susceptibility of tic disorder.
