PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and dental caries experience in Korean adolescents based on the 2010 ~ 2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. METHODS: The study subjects were 2,655 Korean adolescents aged 10 to 18 years. Subjects were classified into four groups according to their serum 25(OH)D levels. We used logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and for dental caries experience after adjusting for age, household income level, recipient of basic livelihood, tooth brushing and visiting dental clinics. RESULT: Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that serum 25(OH)D insufficiency (20 ng/mL≤25(OH)D<30 ng/mL) was associated with increased odd ratios (ORs) for dental caries experience in boys (OR = 2.577, 95% CI = 1.013–6.557), compared with serum 25(OH)D sufficiency (25(OH)D≥30.0 ng/mL). CONCLUSION: The serum 25(OH)D levels were found to be related to risk of dental caries experience in Korean adolescent boys.

2.Survey on Sedation Training for Pediatric Residents in Training Hospitals

The purpose of this study was to investigate current status of sedation training for the residents in pediatric dentistry training institutions and opinions about continuing education after the residency program.
Surveys were sent to 18 pediatric dentistry training institutions by e-mail, and the responses were collected and analyzed. Most of the sedation education period for the residents were the 1st-year education (61.1%) and 1 - 3 years of integrated education (55.6%). In terms of an externship, 5 institutions (27.8%) sent their residents to the department of anesthesiology. Second half of the 1st year (50%) was the highest for a resident to use sedation for the first time. The period of supervisor participation varied from not participating at all to whole time throughout the residency program. The sedation training is conducted at all training institutions, but there were variations in the experience that a resident can gain.
All training institutions agreed on the necessity of continuing education of the sedation, but there were various opinions regarding time, method, and the period of review course. Overall, this study suggested that continuing education should be consisted of 1 - 2 hours of didactic education every year and clinical skills and simulation training in every 2 - 3 years.
3.Echocardiographic features of accessory mitral valve tissue presenting left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in a dog

In a 3-year-old Samoyed, aortic bulging was found on radiography during a general check-up. On echocardiography, turbulent flow was found in left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) with high velocity (6.1 m/s). A linear structure was attached to the interventricular septum and connected to the chordae tendineae reaching the papillary muscle. A part of the structure moved during cardiac cycle, similar to mitral motion. This dog was diagnosed with LVOT obstruction caused by accessory mitral valve tissue (AMVT). This is the first report of AMVT in veterinary medicine. AMVT should be considered as a possible cause of LVOT obstruction in dogs.

5.Changes in Stress, Occupational Stress, and Subjective Health Problems of Novice Female Nurses: Secondary Data Analysis

Purpose:
This study aimed to examine the changes in stress, occupational stress, and subjective health problems of novice female nurses within the first 18 months of work.
Methods:
This was a longitudinal study conducted with a secondary data analysis based on the Shift Work Nurse’s Health and Turnover (SWNHT) study. The participants were 178 female novice nurses who participated in all 3 data collection activities (on the first day of orientation before ward placement [T0], 6 months after work [T1], and 18 months after work [T2]). The stress, occupational stress, 8 subjective health problems (upper musculoskeletal pain, leg/foot discomfort, depression, anxiety or emotional disorder, sleep disturbance, headache, gastrointestinal disorder, menstrual disorder, and others), and the greatest health problem during the study period were measured, respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 to obtain descriptive statistics.
Results:
The subjective health of novice female nurses were found to be poor at T1 compared to T0 on both physical (upper musculoskeletal pain, leg/foot discomfort, and sleep disturbance) and psychological health problems (depression and stress). However, the psychological health problems of the participants were alleviated at T2 whereas; physical health problems persisted until T2.
Conclusion
Novice nurses had poor health problems 6 months after work. Sleep disturbance and musculoskeletal pain persisted although other health problems such as depression and stress were alleviated over the period. Strategies to prevent and manage different health problems of novice female nurses at different work duration are urgently needed.
6.Effects of Heat Wave on Body Temperature and Blood Pressure in the Poor and Elderly.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the acute effects of heat stress on body temperature and blood pressure of elderly individuals living in poor housing conditions. METHODS: Repeated measurements of the indoor temperature, relative humidity, body temperature, and blood pressure were conducted for 20 elderly individuals living in low-cost dosshouses in Seoul during hot summer days in 2010. Changes in the body temperature, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) according to variations in the indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity were analyzed using a repeated-measures ANOVA controlling for age, sex, alcohol, and smoking. RESULTS: Average indoor and outdoor temperatures were 31.47degrees C (standard deviation [SD], 0.97degrees C) and 28.15degrees C (SD, 2.03degrees C), respectively. Body temperature increased by 0.21degrees C (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.16 to 0.26degrees C) and 0.07degrees C (95% CI, 0.04 to 0.10degrees C) with an increase in the indoor and outdoor temperature of 1degrees C. DBP decreased by 2.05 mmHg (95% CI, 0.05 to 4.05 mmHg), showing a statistical significance, as the indoor temperature increased by 1degrees C, while it increased by 0.20 mmHg (95% CI, -0.83 to 1.22 mmHg) as outdoor temperature increased by 1degrees C. SBP decreased by 1.75 mmHg (95% CI, -1.11 to 4.61 mmHg) and 0.35 mmHg (95% CI, -1.04 to 1.73 mmHg), as the indoor and outdoor temperature increased by 1degrees C, respectively. The effects of relative humidity on SBP and DBP were not statistically significant for both indoor and outdoor. CONCLUSIONS: The poor and elderly are directly exposed to heat waves, while their vital signs respond sensitively to increase in temperature. Careful adaptation strategies to climate change considering socioeconomic status are therefore necessary.

7.Beef-Induced Anaphylaxis Confirmed by the Basophil Activation Test.

Beef allergies are relatively rare, especially in adults. However, clinical manifestations can vary from urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis to gastrointestinal symptoms. Currently available tests, such as skin testing or in vitro determination of beef-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE), do not provide an accurate diagnosis of beef allergy. The recent development of the basophil activation test (BAT) presents a new opportunity for the diagnosis of food allergies. Here, we report a 37-year-old woman with a history of recurrent generalised urticaria, nausea, vomiting and hypotension after ingestion of beef, suggesting a beef allergy. Although the skin prick test and serum specific IgE to beef, pork and milk allergens showed negative results using commercial kits, the BAT showed significant upregulation of CD203c in a dose-dependent manner compared to both non-atopic and atopic controls. To our knowledge, this is the first case study of beef allergy consisting of a non-IgE-mediated reaction. The detection of food allergies using direct basophil activation is suggested to complement conventional diagnostic tests.

8.Association between soluble forms of the receptor for advanced glycation end products and periodontal disease: a retrospective study

Objectives:
Periodontitis is the most common chronic disease that causes tooth loss and is related to systemic diseases such as cardiovascular dis-ease and diabetes. An objective indicator of the current activity of periodontitis is necessary. Soluble forms of the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (sRAGE) are markers that reflect the status of inflammatory diseases. In this study, the relationship between sRAGE and periodontitis was analyzed to determine whether it can be used to diagnose the current state of periodontitis.
Patients and Methods:
Eighty-four patients without any systemic diseases were diagnosed with periodontitis using three classifications of periodontitis. Demographics and oral examination data such as plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP) index, and probing pocket depth (PPD) were analyzed according to each classification. In addition, correlation and partial correlation between sRAGE and the values indicating periodontitis were analyzed.
Results:
In each classification, the level of sRAGE tended to decrease if periodontitis was present or severe, but this change was not statistically significant. sRAGE and periodontitis-related variables exhibited a weak correlation, among which the BOP index showed a relatively strong negative cor-relation (ρ=–0.20). Based on this, on analyzing the correlation between the BOP index and sRAGE in the group with more severe periodontitis (PPD≥5 mm group, severe group of AAP/CDC [American Academy of Periodontology/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], periodontitis group of López), the correlation further increased (ρ=–0.23, –0.40, –0.50). Partial correlation analysis of the sRAGE and BOP index showed a stronger negative correlation (ρ=–0.36, –0.55, –0.45).
Conclusion
sRAGE demonstrated a tendency to decrease upon increased severity of periodontitis according to the classifications used. Above all, the correlation with the BOP index, which reflects the current state of periodontitis, was higher in the group with severe periodontitis. This indicates that the current status of periodontitis can be diagnosed through sRAGE.
9.Changes in Dietary Behavior of Shift Work Nurses: A Longitudinal Study

Purpose:
This study aimed to identify the changes in dietary behavior of shift work nurses and its influencing factors over time.
Methods:
This was a secondary data analysis study based on the Shift Work Nurses’ Health and Turnover study. Data of 165 shift work nurses, who were followed for three-time points [before shift work (T0), after 6 months (T1), and after 18 months(T2) of shift work], were analyzed. Dietary behavior, level of stress, fatigue, depressive symptoms, and the amount of physical activity were measured. SPSS 28.0 was used to analyze the data to acquire descriptive statistics, repeated-measures ANOVA, and multiple linear regression with generalized estimating equations (GEE).
Results:
Dietary behavior of shift work nurses was poorer at T1 and T2 as compared to T0. As a result of GEE, shift work duration, level of stress, fatigue, and depressive symptoms were found to have negative impacts on dietary behavior.
Conclusion
Dietary behavior deteriorated and remained poor over time since shift work began. Shift work, along with stress, fatigue, and depressive symptoms, were the factors influencing their dietary behavior. Thus, to improve shift work nurses’ dietary behavior, efforts to decrease stress, and alleviate fatigue and depressive symptoms are urgently required.
10.Effectiveness and Safety of Liraglutide Treatment in Patients with a Psychiatric Disorder

Objectives:
Liraglutide is a glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonist which has been used as an anti-obesity drug. It was reported that patients might develop or worsen suicidal ideas and/or depression during liraglutide treatment, especially when it comes to patients with a psychiatric disorder. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of liraglutide, especially in terms of the psychiatric adverse effects.
Methods:
A retrospective chart review study was conducted on psychiatric patients prescribed liraglutide for more than one month from September 2018 to September 2020. Based on their medical records, we investigated the change in the weight and body mass index (BMI) of patients from the baseline to 6 months of receiving liraglutide treatment. Information on the adverse effects was also obtained, including psychiatric adverse effects such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. A mixed linear model was used for assessing the time effect on change in weight and BMI.
Results:
A total of 24 patients were included in the current study, and the most common psychiatric diagnosis included major depressive disorder (n=13, 54.2%). There was a significant change in weight (F=6.127, p=0.001) and BMI (F=6.749, p<0.001) during the liraglutide treatment. Worsening of depression and anxiety occurred in one patient but improved after the adjustment of psychiatric medications.
Conclusion
The current study found that liraglutide treatment in patients with a psychiatric disorder can be a safe and effective intervention for weight reduction.
