Star-shaped polymer of epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and lactide is a new material. Its degradation function has an importance to its applications. There are many factors affecting its degradation. This paper is mainly aimed at investigation in which the surface morphology, pH, molecular weight and weight loss rate, branching ESO-lactide star polymers the degree of change were studied. It was found through the experiments that, the changing rates of the branching ESO-lactide star polymers were slower than the degree of PDLLA change compared to the surface morphology, pH, molecular weight and weight loss rate. This has a guiding significance to the further application of ESO-lactide.

2.Dietary intake of fats and fatty acids in the Korean population: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to estimate average total fat and fatty acid intakes as well as identify major food sources using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VI-1 (2013). SUBJECTS/METHODS: Total fat and fatty acid intakes were estimated using 24-hour dietary recall data on 7,048 participants aged > or = 3 years from the KNHANES VI-1 (2013). Data included total fat, saturated fatty acid (SFA), monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), n-3 fatty acid (n-3 FA), and n-6 fatty acid (n-6 FA) levels. Population means and standard errors of the mean were weighted in order to produce national estimates and separated based on sex, age, income, as well as residential region. Major food sources of fat, SFA, MUFA, PUFA, n-3 FA, and n-6 FA were identified based on mean consumption amounts of fat and fatty acids in each food. RESULTS: The mean intake of total fat was 48.0 g while mean intakes of SFA, MUFA, PUFA, n-3 FA, and n-6 FA were 14.4 g, 15.3 g, 11.6 g, 1.6 g, and 10.1 g, respectively. Intakes of MUFA and SFA were each higher than that of PUFA in all age groups. Pork was the major source of total fat, SFA, and MUFA, and soybean oil was the major source of PUFA. Milk and pork were major sources of SFA in subjects aged 3-11 years and > or = 12 years, respectively. Perilla seed oil and soybean oil were main sources of n-3 FA in subjects aged > or = 50 years and aged < 50 years, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Estimation of mean fatty acid intakes of this study using nationally represented samples of the Korean population could be useful for developing and evaluating national nutritional policies.

3.Effect of Coenzyme Q10 on Radiation Nephropathy in Rats.

The kidney is one of the most radiosensitive organs in the abdominal cavity and is the dose-limiting structure in cancer patients receiving abdominal or total body irradiation. In the present study, the effect of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on radiation nephropathy was evaluated in rats. A total of 72 rats were equally randomized into 4 groups: Control, CoQ10, irradiation with 10 Gy (RT) + placebo, or RT + CoQ10. The 2 RT groups received single 10 Gy of abdominal irradiation. The 2 CoQ10 groups were supplemented daily with 1 mL of soybean oil containing 10 mg/kg of CoQ10. The RT + placebo and control groups received same dose of soybean oil. After 24 weeks, laboratory and histopathologic findings were compared. The 2 RT groups showed significant increases in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine levels and significant pathologic changes such as glomerulosclerosis and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. CoQ10 supplementation resulted in significant reductions of BUN and creatinine levels compared with the RT + placebo group (P < 0.001 and P = 0.038, respectively). CoQ10 treatment significantly attenuated glomerular and tubular changes of irradiated kidney in semiquantitative analysis (P < 0.001 for both). Administration of CoQ10 can alleviate the radiation-induced nephropathy.

4.Effect of Cooling & Lidocaine on Propofol Induced Vascular Pain.

Propofol containing solvents such as soybean oil, egg phosphatide, glycerol, is known to arouse pain on intravenous injection in most patients. The study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of the two methods in preventing pain during injection of propofol on induction of anesthesia. Patients were allocated randomly into three groups. The one to receive unmodified propofol as control, the other to have injection of propofol with lidocaine added O.l mg/kg and another to have administration of propofol cooled in 0-4 degrees C. The results showed that propofol with lidocaine mixed and propofol cooled in 0-4 degrees C significantly lowered the incidence of pain during the intravenous injection of the drug and that addition of lidocaine and cooling had no untoward effect on the cardiovascular system.

5.Stability of whole cell biocatalyst for biodiesel production from renewable oils.

Lipase-mediated biodiesel production becomes increasingly important because of mild reaction conditions, pollution free during the process and easy product separation. Compared with traditional immobilized lipase, whole cell biocatalyst is promising for biodiesel production because it is easy to prepare and has higher enzyme activity recovery. Rhizopus oryzae IFO4697 can be used as the catalyst for biodiesel production. To further study the stability of the whole cell biocatalyst is extremely important for its further application on large scale. This paper focuses on the stability study of Rhizopus oryzae IFO4697 when used for the methanolysis of renewable oils for biodiesel production. The results showed that water content was important for achieving high catalytic activity and good stability of the biocatalyst. The optimum water content was found to be 5%-15%. Both particle size and desiccation methods showed no obvious effect on the stability of the biocatalyst. With GA cross-linking pretreatment, the stability of the biocatalyst could be improved significantly. When Rhizopus oryzae IFO4697 repeatedly used for next batch reaction, direct vacuum filtration was found to be a good way for the maintenance of good stability of the biocatalyst. Under the optimum reaction conditions, the methyl ester yield could keep over 80% during 20 repeated reaction batches.

6.The growth inhibitory effect of some vegetable oils on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth inhibitory effects of some vegetable oils on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacillus casei (L. casei). METHODS: Two bacterial strains and 5 kinds of test solutions (3 experimental groups: orange essential oil, olive oil, soybean oil; 1 positive control group: chlorhexidine solution; 1 negative control group: broth medium) were used in this study. S. mutans and L. casei pellets were exposed to 1 ml of one of the test solutions for 1 minute. Then, the treated bacterial cells were incubated in fresh broth medium for 0, 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours. The optical density of the broth medium was measured using an ELISA reader at 620 nm. A nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test (with Mann-Whitney U tests) was performed to compare the change in optical density between different groups at different time points. RESULTS: Bacterial growth was significantly inhibited in all experimental groups compared to the negative control group. The growth of L. casei was less affected by experimental oils than that of S. mutans. Orange essential oil had the maximum growth inhibitory effect on S. mutans up to 8 hours, similar to that in the positive control group (P<0.01). Experimental oils had greater growth inhibitory effect on L. casei than chlorhexidine solution. CONCLUSIONS: This in vitro study confirmed the growth inhibitory effect of some vegetable oils on S. mutans and L. casei. Rising of the mouth using these vegetable oils is expected to have an anti-plaque effect, but additional clinical studies are needed to confirm this.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this research was to study the different long term effects of consumption of dietary oil sources with varying omega-6/omega-3 (omega-6/omega-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) ratios on bone marrow fatty acid level, ex vivo prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) release, and mineral content of bone in rabbits. MATERIALS/METHODS: For this purpose, weaning and female New Zealand white rabbits were purchased and randomly divided into five groups and offered ad libitum diets containing 70 g/kg of added oil for 100 days. The dietary lipid treatments were formulated to provide the following ratios of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids: 8.68 soy bean oil (SBO control), 21.75 sesame oil (SO), 0.39 fish oil (FO), 0.63 algae oil (DHA), and 0.68 algae oils (DHA/ARA). DHA and ARA are two types of marine microalgae of the genus Crypthecodinium cohnii. RESULTS: The dietary treatments had significant effects on the bone marrow fatty acids of rabbits. Rabbits fed the FO diet, containing the highest omega-3 PUFA concentration, and those fed the SBO diet showed the highest omega-6 PUFA. On the other hand, a positive correlation was observed between Ex vivo PGE2 level and the omega-6/omega-3 dietary ratio. Significant effects of dietary treatment on femur Ca, P, Mg, and Zn contents were observed in both genders. CONCLUSIONS: Findings of the current study clearly demonstrated that dietary PUFA, particularly omega-6/omega-3 and ARA/EPA ratios are important factors in determining bone marrow fatty acid profile, and this in turn determines the capacity of bone for synthesis of PGE2, thereby reducing bone resorption and improving bone mass during growth.

9.Stability of Total Nutrient Admixtures.

PURPOSE: Conventional intravenous nutrition has been given as a solution of amino acids combined with dextrose and a separate line delivering a lipid emulsion. This technique was unsatisfactory, however, because of difficulties in managing technical and metabolic complications. Since the first clinical use of a single solution containing all the necessary nutrients was introduced in 1976, the total nutrient admixture (TNA) system has been used. However, despite the numerous advantages of this TNA system, it has not been used worldwide because of an assumption about unstability of this admixture. This study was conducted to compare the physical stability of TNA systems using two different 2 commercially available amino acid solutions and fat emulsions. METHODS: Each group contained 600 ml of 20% dextrose, 250 ml of 10% amino acid solution, 250 ml of 10% fat emulsion, 0.2 ml of heparin, and 20 ml of electrolyte solution was investigated for 7 days while being stored 4oC and at ambient temperature. The stabilities of these admixtures were compared by noting changes in macroscopic appearance, pH, osmolarity, Zeta-potential, peroxide value, particle size and distribution, and fat composition. RESULTS: When an amino acid solution containing P 2 was used, a supernatant yellow band was observed from the 3rd day at ambient temperature. The pH and peroxide value also showed significant changes, but these changes did not exceed the product-specifications. When an amino acid solution without P 2 was used, no significant change was observed. CONCLUSION: TNA systems are physically stable at 4oC temperature for at least 7 days, but TNA systems prepared with amino acid solution containing P 2 are not stable at ambient temperature from the 3rd day. On the other hand, TNA systems prepared with an amino acid solution without P 2 are stable at ambient temperature for 7 days. Various commercially available fat emulsions containing 10% soybean oil did not affect the stability of TNA systems.

10.A Case of Propofol-Induced Oropharyngeal Angioedema and Bronchospasm.

Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is an ultrashort-acting sedative agent with sedative and amnestic effects that is used not only for anesthesia but also for sedation during minor outpatient procedures and endoscopic examinations. Rare cases of anaphylaxis following propofol administration have been reported in the medical literature. Documentation of anaphylaxis is often lacking because the cause and effect relationship is often hard to prove. Only a minority of patients get referred for allergy testing to confirm the offending drug. Here we report a 74-year-old woman who had an anaphylactic reaction with severe oropharyngeal edema and bronchospasm for a few minutes after receiving propofol during endoscopic examination. An allergy skin test was positive for both propofol and soybean. Soybean in the intralipid is one component of propofol, and we concluded that this anaphylaxis was caused by soybean.
