1.Two Histologic Variants of Giant Cell Carcinoma of the Pancreas.

Two cases of unusual giant carcinoma of the pancreas are presented. Each presented with a large tumor mass with or without cystic change, either in the head or tail portion of the pancreas. A pleomorphic gaint cell carcinoma variant (case 1) differed from an epulis type (case 2) with nuclear atypism of giant cells, but widespread metastasis in both cases reflected the accountability of spindle cell element as an important parameter for the determination of their biological behavior.

2.Severe Hypokalemia Found during Operation: A case report.

There has existed controversies concerning the relationship between hypokalemia and perioperative dysrhythmia. Definite lowest serum potassium level that guarantee safety has not been determined. We found accidentally severe hypokalemia (below than 2 mmol/L) after the induction of anesthesia in a 51-year-old man who had no systemic disease. This patient suffered from a traffic accident 18 years ago and has bed-ridden up to now. In addition, recently he had poor oral intake. The patient's serum potassium level was within normal range in blood chemistry taken 5 days before operation. Although no dysrhythmia developed, we administered potassium during operation. With the continuous potassium and magnesium replacement postoperatively, the serum potassium level returned to normal range. With the experience of this case, we had a chance to review the effect of hypokalemia on dysrhythmia and causes of hypokalemia.

Sequence information from the ribosomal RNA molecule can be used as a molecular clock. Therefore, 16S rRNA sequences have become a widely used tool in bacterial systematics, bacterial typing and studies of the composition of micro-organisms in environmental samples. Consequently, the databases are continuously updated with new 16S rRNA sequence information from different species. This in turn facilitates the identification of new isolates, which is important for the diagnosis of various infectious diseases in research. To development differential identification technique in the Yersinia species, the 16S rDNA for total 17 serotypes of Y. pseudotuberculosis type strains and one of Y. enterocolitica wild strain were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and cloned into pGEM-T vector, partially sequenced and analyzed. The 16S rDNA nucleotide sequence homologies among Yersinia strains were ranged 100% to 93.6%. Phylogenetic tree generated from 16S rDNA sequencing data showed different phyletic line that could be readily separated from each serotypes and other enteric bacterium.

10.The Effects of Bear Bile on the Expression of the p53 Protein in Cancer Cell Lines.

The effects of bear bile on the expression of the p53 protein in cancer cell lines were investigated by Western blot and RT-PCR methods. The p53 protein expression was increased after addition of bear bile in HaCaT, KUMA3, KUMA4 and KUMA6 cell lines that carried mutations n the p53 gene, but it is not ncreased n HCT116 and KUMA5 cell lines with the normal p53 gene as determined by Western blot method. The level of p53 mRNA was not altered in all cell lines after the treatment of bear bile as determined RT-PCR. These results indicate that the increment of the p53 protein after addition of bear bile was caused by increase in the protein stability but not by increase in protein synthesis. It can be concluded that bear bile affects positively only in the cell lines which have genetic variation of the p53 gene, and does not affect in the cell lines which have wild-type p53 gene, on the other hand.
