Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1976;9(1):147-152
A study was conducted during the period of August 13 to August 18, 1974 to obtain information on knowledge and attitude of the rural area housewife toward health care and antibiotics using. Interviewed 242 housewives dwelling in Soodong and Hwado Myun, Yangju Gun, Kyunggi Do, a typical rural area in Korea and the following results are obtained: 1. Of 242 housewives interviewed, 20.2% were illiteracy, 68.2% was graduated from primary school, 9.1% from middle school and 2.5% from high school. 2. Of those interviewed, 8.7% were Christian, 5.0% Bueldist, 2.9% Confucianism, and 83.4% of those were no religious preference. 3. Utility rate according with the kind of mass media in home was 85.1% of respondents possessed radio, 16.1% of magazine, 12.8% of newspaper, and 4.1% of television. 4. In the case of patients occur in a family, 13.0% out of 242 respondents had chosen physician's clinics for initial medical care place, 58.4% drug stores, 0.9% herb medicine and 27.7% of those had chosen folk medicine at home. 5. Antibiotics effective complaints listed by the respondents were skin diseases with 43.8%, suppureated wound 30.0%, URI like symptoms 18.2%, diarrhea 14.5%, low back pain 12.9%, fever 6.2%, loss of appetite 3.3%, all kind of diseases 2.5%, urethral discharge 2.1% and tuberculosis 0.8% respectively. 6. Only 14.7% of respondents had obtained antibiotics for medical care from physician's clinics and 85.3% of the respondents had obtained antibiotics from drug store (70.7%), village shop (10.4%), and salesmen in street market without any physician's prescription. 7. Eight-nine percent of the respondents were understanding on patient care activity as the local health subcenter but only 11.0% of those on M.C.H., 29.0% of those on family planning, 21% on vaccination, and only 6.6% on tuberculosis control activity. 8. Utility rate of the local health subcenter was 71.9% out of the patients indicated medical care of medical facilities.

3.A case Report of Osteopathia Striata
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1972;7(1):155-158
Osteopathia Striata is a rare developmental abnormality characterized by striation of the skeleton, especially the metaphyses of the long bones. It has been seen on only a few occasions since it was first described by Voorhoeve in 1924. This case, a nine year old boy, showed well marked striation throughout bones of right lower extremity and pelvis and so justifies the title of paper.

4.A Case of Bilateral Congenital Clasped Thumb
The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1972;7(1):147-150
Congenital clasped thumb is an unusal condition characterized by the thumb being held tightly beneath the flexed fingers in such a way that it cannot escape for normal prehension. New-born infants frequently hold their thumbs beneath their flexed fingers. If the flexed thumb persists and normal independent action of the thumb does not develop third or fourth month after birth, congenital clasped thumb is suggested. It is the result of failure of normal developmenl of the muscles and tendinous structures that provide extension for the thumb and fingers at the metacarpophalangeal joint. The deformity also includes volar soft tissue contractures of digits in varying degrees of severity. Since first description of Zadek in 1934 for bilateral thumb extensor agenesis. total 48 cases of congenital clasped thumb have been reparted throughout the world. A case of bilateral congenital clasped thumb with bilateral calcaneo-varus deformity in one month-old boy was diagnosed and treatment with prospect of complete funtional recovery.

5.Study on the Death Rates and Causes of Death.
Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1977;10(1):142-149
To use basic data for health planning and evaluation of Kangwha community health project of Yonsei University, a study on death rates and causes of death were investigated in two townships (Naega and Sunwon Myuns) in Kangwha County from April 1, 1975 to March 31, 1977). All death was identified and reported by family health workers who are living in each village and 2 trained public health nurses confirmed the death. The causes of death were investigated by 2 public physicians. Total number of deaths for 2 years was 230 and the followings are brief summary of the study. 1. Age-adjusted crude death rates of study area were 8.69 per 1,000 population in 1975 and 7.18 per 1,000 population in 1976. Age-adjusted crude death rates for male were 9.18 in 1975 and 6.38 in 1976 and for female were 8.33 and 7.80 per 1,000 population. 2. Age specific death rate curves by year and sex showed "U" shapes. 3. Infant and neonatal death rates were 30.08 and 22.56 per 1,000 live births in 1975, and the rates in 1976 were 18.18 and 13.64. 4. The most common cause of death was cerebrovascular disease and average cause specific death rate for the disease was 215.5 per 100,000 population. 5. Four leading causes of death were non-infectious origin ; cerevrovascular disease, malignant neoplasms, senility and suicide. Pulmonaty tubeculosis and pneumonia occupied 5th and 9th causes of death. 6. Stomach cancer and hepatoma occupied 61.3% of total death due to malignant neoplasms. 7. Most frequent cause of neonatal death was birth injury. Two deaths due to tetanus were found in 1975, but no death due to this disease was found in 1976. 8. About half of deceased received care from physician before death.

6.Mating Type and its Mycological Characteristics of Micrpsporum Gypseum Comples.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1981;19(6):835-846
Granuloma pyogenicum is a benign vascular tumor, usually about 0.5 to 2cm in diameter. It occurs as a single lesion with few exceptions and consists of pedunulated nodule with a dull red or slightly purplish color. We observed a 29-year old man who had multiple satellite recurrences in the scapular region which developed after excision of a single lesion of granuloma pyogenicum. Histapathologic findings showed many newly formed capillaries that had prominant endothelial cells and showed varying degrees of dilation without appearance of epiderrnal collarette sign. The lesions were much improved by X-ray irradiation.

7.Evaluation of Factors for Accurate Diagnosis of Scabies.
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1974;12(1):13-20
In order to evaluate the accurate diagnosis of scabies through exatr.inations of all requred. conditions, the author conducted an observation on 769 cases of scabies at the Department of Dermatology, Kyungpook University Hospital from January, 1962 to Octover, 1973, In 1962 the frequency of the disease appeared to be low but it dramatically rose to 20 or 30 times between 1963 and 1966, again showing an increasing tendency from 1971. The ratio of frequency between male and female was 4.2: 1. Seasonal occurrence of scahics was found to be highest in winter. Infectious rate in the family was 83.3% and incubation period vas estimated from 15 days to 2 months. Acarus scabiei or its ova were found in 46.5% of all cases examined and in patients over 16 years of age. Acarus scabiei or ova were chiefly found in vesicles of the finger web but the ova were also found in the subungual fold of the finger, which is an important site of examination.

9.A Study on the Usefulness of Birth Registration Data in Rural Korea.
Chung Ok JI ; Young Key KIM ; Ki Soon KIM
Korean Journal of Preventive Medicine 1977;10(1):109-117
The onprovement of civil registration reguires continuous study rather than periodic efforts. More and better statistics, however, are urgently required to formulate development programs and planning, Data obtainable from the civil registration are usually marred by errors of omission which are difficult to correct. This study aimed at finding out the problems occurring when a set of crude birth registration data in a rural area is used. Data Sources of this study are : 1) For birth registration : government birth registration records obtained from myun office and other government offices. 2) for the actual number of births : birth and child records from the Kang Wha Community Health Project. The study area is Sunwon Myun and Naega Myun in Kang Wha Gun, Gyunggido. The reference period for the accumulated data is one full year : Jan. 1st 1975 - Dec. 31st 1975. Major findings are as follows : If the number of registered birth is compared with the actual number of births which occurred in the target area, the former os far greater than the latter. The general assumption usually is , that the actual number of exceeds the registered number of birth in Korea. The observation from this specific study in this specific target area, shows the opposite trend. The number of births which actually occurred during the year of 1975 in the study area namely 256. The difference comes mainly from the fact that many cases of births from other areas were registered in the target area. In other words birth is not registered where it occurred but where the permanent residence address is. Among 550 births registered in the target area 66% did not occur in the target area. Only one third of all registered births were registered within the legal period for birth registration which is 2 weeks. 34% of the registered births actually occurred in 1974, but were registered in 1975. In 55% of the cases a difference was observed between the actual data of birth and the registered data of birth. From the 256 births which occurred in the target area, only 153 births (59%) were registered at the myun office and the remaining 130 births (41%) were not resistered there in the year of study. 6% of the 550 cases listed as registered have no separate registration sheets. Nevertheless, they definitely have been registered in the birth list at the myun office. 3% of the 550 cases are not recorded in this list but have a separate registration sheet at the myun offices. In conclusion, birth registration data have many errors and problems. Their usefulness as a source for vital and other statistics should be reconsidered. A series of sound methological studies will be necessary to establish their actual usefulness. A continuous and permanent compulsory system of birth recording is needed.

Journal of the Korean Society of Virology 1997;27(2):169-176
In this study, the feasibility of identification and genotypic differentiation of enteroviruses was investigated by using nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (nested RT-PCR), single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP), and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) techniques. Two hundred seventy-four clinical samples were assayed by both nested RT-PCR and tube culture method using MRC-5 and MK cells; 58 (86.6%) out of 67 enterovirus culture-positive samples contained enteroviral RNA. In addition, 114 (55.1%) of 207 samples from patients with suspected enteroviral CNS disease with negative viral cultures were positive by the nested RT-PCR. The nested RT-PCR products were genotyped by the SSCP method and the results were compared with serotypes. We could differentiate 6 subtypes, 3 of which are similar to coxsackievirus B3, B5, echovirus 11, plus 3 other subtypes. RFLP cleaved with Sty I, Bgl I, and Xmn I yielded characteristic patterns for each laboratory strains. This study demonstrates the usefulness of the RT-PCR for the rapid diagnosis of enterovirus infection and the potentials of the SSCP method for differentiation of enterovirus strains.
