PURPOSE: This study was done to examine the effects of mood state, resourcefulness, and health perception on health promoting behavior of hospital nurses. METHODS: Convenience sampling was conducted for nurses working at three University hospital and 336 nurses were selected. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. RESULTS: The results of the analysis showed that the score for nurses' mood state was 41.76+/-18.90; for resourcefulness, 11.30+/-20.63; for health perception, 3.32+/-.77, and for health promoting behavior, 111.55+/-17.76. Mood state, resourcefulness, and health perception were significantly correlated with health promoting behavior. The overall explanatory power of the effects of nurses' mood state, resourcefulness, and health perception on health promoting behavior was 27.8%. CONCLUSION: Study results indicate that better mood state, higher resourcefulness, and higher health perception result in more health promoting behavior.
2.Cryosurgery for Treatment of Trichiasis.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1977;18(3):243-245
We applied the cryosurgical technique to treat 10 selected patients with trichiasis. AmoHs retinal probe (CO2) was applied on the lids with temperature of -40 degrees C - -50 degrees C for 30 seconds using the double, rapid-freeze, slow-thaw technique. We observed recurrent trichiasis in a case, but retreatment by double freeze-thaw cycle was successful.

Postpubertal mumps may result in ochitis and permanent testicular atrophy may develop following infection. This present study was initiated to evaluate the preventive effect of interferon-alpha2B on infertilty after mumps orchitis. There were 21 patients with mumps orchitis between May 1990 and June 1997. Patients were randomly distributed into 2 groups: group 1 patients (n=13) maintained therapy with interferon-alpha2B (3x10(6) IU per day) and group 2 were managed by conservatively. All of the patients were evaluated with testis size measurement, mumps virus titer, hormone level, and if possible semen analysis. For group 1 patients symptoms disappeared within 2 to 3 days and the volume of testis returned to normal within 11 days and testis atrophy was not observed in all patients in follow up. But asthenospermia was continued in 4 patients (unilateral 2, bilateral 2). For group 2 patients symptoms disappeared within 5 to 6 days and the volume of testis returned to normal within 10 days and testis atrophy was observed in 3 patients (unilateral 2, bilateral 1) in floow up. Asthenospermia was continued in 4 patients (unilateral 2, bilateral 2). Sperm count and morphology were recovered all the recover in group 1, 4 patients had persistent reduced sperm count and morphology in group 2, respectively. These observations suggest that systemic interferon-alpha2B treatment is highly effective in preventing infertility as well as testicular atrophy after mumps orchitis.

Korean Journal of Urology 1999;40(5):649-651
We report a case of spontaneous uretreral rupture cured by conservative management. The patient(65-year-old man) who had left flank pain for 6 days was presented to our hospital. He had no history of trauma and previous urologic problems. Diagnosis was made by IVP and abdominal CT scan, which showed extravasation from left upper ureter and accumulation of a large amount of contrast media in the retroperitoneal space. On ureteroscopy, partial obstruction of left lower ureter was found and the upper ureteral mucosa showed diffuse erythematous changes. The rupture site with erythematous edema and some necrotic tissues was identified in lateral wall near ureteropelvic junction. A guide wire was passed upward the rupture site under direct vision of ureteroscope and then 6 Fr. double J stent was successfully palced. The stent was removed 4 weeks after the placement. Followup IVP showed good urinary drainange without evidence of extravasation.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to elucidate the relationship between job stress and pulse wave velocity (PWV) as a cardiovascular risk factor. METHOD: The study design was cross-sectional, and a total of 234 industrial workers were recruited. A structured-questionnaire was used to assess the general characteristics and job characteristics (work demand, decision latitude) using a modified Karasek model. Cuffs were applied to the extremities and a microphone for phonocardiography was placed at the second intercostal space at the margin of the sternum. The subjects rested in a supine position for 5 min, and PWV was measured using a VP-1000(Colin Waveform analyzer). RESULTS: There were significant correlations between blood pressure, glucose, total cholesterol, coagulation factor and PWV. The group with low decision latitude and high decision latitude showed higher levels of PWV, but the differences were not significan. The PWV (left) was significantly higher in the high strain group than in the lower strain group. After adjustment for age and cardiovascular risk factors, job strain was still associated with PWV. CONCLUSION: These result suggest that the high strain group among workers is related to an increased risk of PWV as a marker of atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study were to examine the serum level of estradiol, estriol, progesterone, oxidized LDL in preeclamtic patients and to evaluate the protective effects of estrogen and progesterone against lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) induced cell death in Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). METHODS: We analysed the serum level of estradiol, estriol, progesterone, oxidized LDL in patients with preeclampsia and control. We used LPC to induce cell death in HUVECs. For cytotoxic assay, we did LDL assay for cell death and Resazurin assay for cell viability. HUVECs were exposed to various concentrations of LPC, LPC+estrogen, LPC+progesterone and we did cytotoxic assay. RESULTS: The serum estradiol, estriol were lower in the preeclamptic patients (P<0.05). Oxidized LDL were higher in the preeclamptic patients(P<0.05). LPC induced cell death in a concentration-dependant manner. Estrogen or progesterone inhibited LPC-induced cell death in a concentration-dependant manner (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Estrogen and progesterone attenuated LPC-induced cytotoxicity. The results suggest that Oxidized LDL induced endothelial damage in preeclampsia may be induced by low serum estradiol, estriol and progesterone levels and prevented by estrogen and progesterone addition.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is an aerobic, gram-negative, motile, non-lactose-fermenting, oxidase-producing, and urease-positive bacillus. We reported a case of aortic valve endocarditis due to O. anthropi in a hemodialysis patient. To our knowledge, this is the first case of O. anthropi endocarditis in a hemodialysis patient in Korea. The organism was resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics and susceptible to ciprofloxacin, amikacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin and carbapenem. We treated O. anthropi endocarditis with meropenem for 6 weeks and the patient recovered completely.

Met tyrosine kinase receptor, the receptor of hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF), is present in mouse tissues as two major isoforms differing by a 47-aminoacid segment in the juxtamembrane domain via alternative splicing of exon 14. We found that the smaller isoform of Met (Sm-Met) was highly transformable in both in vitro and in vivo tumorigenesis assays. In this report, close examination of the transforming activity of the Sm-Met showed that the expression of Sm-Met conferred the cells serum independence and anti- apoptotic property when treated with doxorubicin. These properties of Sm-Met seemed to be originated from its far longer maintenance of tyrosine kinase activity after the binding of HGF/SF. Interestingly, the longer maintenance of activated status was accompanied with more increase of tyrosine phosphorylation of Stat3 protein. Moreover, we have tried to find (an) animal tumorigenesis model(s) showing the increase in the expression of this transforming variant of Met. In gamma-ray-induced mouse thymic lymphoma model, the expression of the mRNAs for Sm-Met was significantly increased as well as those of wild type Met and HGF/SF, suggesting a possible role of the Sm-Met in tumorigenesis in vivo.

Journal of Korean Oncology Nursing 2010;10(2):146-155
PURPOSE: This study was conducted in order to analyze themes, concepts, research methods and results of previous domestic research on the nursing of hematologic patients conducted through the last 10 yr, to find trends in the research, and to provide basic materials for setting the direction of future research on the nursing of hematologic patients. METHODS: This study analyzed a total of 72 nursing theses related to hematology sampled from domestic theses for a master's or doctoral degree and papers published in six nursing journals registered in Korea Research Foundation from January 2000 to July 2009. RESULTS: Of the 72 theses, 51 were for a master's degree, 7 for a doctoral degree, and 14 not for an academic degree. The concept covered most frequently in correlation research was 'quality of life' and concepts found in comparative research were stress and quality of life. In experimental research, the most common nursing intervention was oral care. The scale used most frequently was Spielberger's Anxiety Scale. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to expand experimental research applying nursing interventions, and to use objective physiological indexes for more effective assessment in experimental research. Furthermore, interdisciplinary research is required for enhancing the quality of clinical nursing research.
