1.The Comparative Study on the Quality of Life, Health Perception, Self-efficacy of Ostomates by the Fecal Control Type.
Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 1999;11(2):278-287
The study was conducted to compare the quality life (QOL), health perception and self efficacy of the ostomates by the fecal control type. The study sbjects included 128 ostomates in Pusan, Daegu, Daejon and Incheon branches of the Korean Ostomy Association. Data collection was performed for 27 day periods from September 10th to October 6th. 1988. The instruments used in this study were the OL scale developed by Bang (1991). the health perception scale developed by Ware and translated to Korean by Lee (1987), the self efficacy scale developed by Kim( 1995). The analysis of the data was done by the use of descriptive statistics. Chi-square test, ANCOVA and Pearson Correlation with the SAS program. The results of the study are summarized below. 1. Only age was a significant difference between the two groups(p=.014). 2. The ostomate-related characteristics which showed significant differences were the number of participations in the ostomate meetings each month(p=.001). the care manager(p=.017), the number of defecations(p=.001). problems with the colostomy(p=.003), the duration of the ostomates(p=.00l). These variables were controlled using the ANCOVA. 3. The first hypothesis. "There will be differences at the level of the QOL according to the fecal control type" was supported(F=7.87, p .0059). 4. The second hypothesis. "There will be differences at the level of health perception depending on the fecal control type" was supported (F =8.68, p = .0039). 5. The third hypothesis, "There will be differences at the level of self efficacy depending on the fecal control type" was supported(F=4.58. p=.0344). 6. There were significant positive correlation between the QOL and health perception(r= .8225. p=.0001), and self efficacy(r=.6356, p=000l). From the above results, it can be concluded that colostomy irrigation is a good method to improve the QOL, health perception and self-efficacy. Therefore, colostomy irrigation is an important method for rehabilitation nursing use in the care of ostomates.

2.The Effects of Sensory Stimulation for Ingestion in Dysphagic Patients with Stroke.
Korean Journal of Rehabilitation Nursing 2002;5(1):38-48
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of a nursing intervention using sensory stimulation in dysphagic patients. Quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest desigr, was used. 15 patients of each group were assigned for this study, who were hospitalized in the oriental medicine hospital of K. University. Specific stimulation plans were devised based on a dysfunctional area of the subjects. For each modality. subjects were systematically stimulated for 30 minutes. in the experimental group prim to each meal and 3 times per day for a week. The data were analyzed by SPSS PC program using chi2test. Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and Mann-Whitney U test. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The tongue contra! score of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group(u=52.0. p= .007). 2. The score of chewing ability. lip control swallowing ability of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group But no difference is statistically seen between the experimental group and control group. Therefore, this study shows that sensory stimulation using icing. quick stretch. etc., was effective in improving oropharyngeal function in patients with dysphagia.

Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 1998;10(1):85-95
This descriptive study measured the quality of life and the sexual satisfaction for ostomates as an attempt to give nurses basic data to improve life satisfaction of ostomates. The research design was a descriptive study and the data were obtained by Quality of Life questionnaire, and Sexual Satisfaction questionnaire. These data were collected from 21 ostomates undergoing treatment in four university hospitals and one hospital and 36 ostomates depending on one medical agency by direct obtaining method and mailing method from March. 3, to March 24,1997. Data analysis was cone by the SAS computer program and Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation Coefficient, and Cronbach-alpha were used. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The item mean score for quality of life for the ostomates was 3.03. For six subscales in the quality of life scale, the mean scores of subscales were in order of the highest 3.46 for family relationship, and the second scored subscales were economic life(2.84) and physical state(2.96). 2. The item mean score of sexual satisfaction for the ostomate was 2.86. 3. The result of analysis of relationship between quality of life and sexual satisfaction was significant(r=0.21, p=0.05). The relationship between sexual satisfaction and each subscale of quality of life were significant with the self-esteem (r=0.34, p=0.01), physical state(r=0.21, p=0.01). In conclusion, it was found that the quality of life and sexual satisfaction of ostomates were low. The quality of life and sexual satisfaction was correlated. Although chronic disease affect to quality of life and sexual satisfaction, an adequate nursing intervention will improve the life satisfaction.

8.Serodiagnosis of Syphilis.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1975;13(4):271-279
The serodiagnostic test of syphilis employed with the greatest freguency in this country is the VDRL procedure which is one of the flocculation test utilizing cardiolipin-lecithin as an antigen. As well known, the immunologically nonspecific nature of this test relegates it only to screening test, so that all the sera displaying weakly reactive or reactive VDRL in the absence of definite evidence of present or past syphilis should be confirmed by using the specific treponemal antigen tests. However, there are only lirnited numbers of institutions at which the specific treponemal antigen tests are carried out, because the tests usually need quite coaiplicatnl technology and specifically trained personnel. The Treponema. pallidum hema.gglutination assay (TPHA) which was first described by Rathlev in 1965 and established as more improved and standardized procedure in serodia, gnosis of syphilis by Tornizaxva and Kasamatsu (1966) has been found to h as sensitive and specific as the technically more complicated Fluorescent treponemaI antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) or Treponema pallidum immobilization (TPI) po cedure by rnany investigators from different parts of the world during these 10 years. The TPHA has also been found to have definite advantage over the other tests because it is easy to perform and economic. The present authors felt. that the TPHA meight be the most reasonable method to be used in this country and decided to evaluate it in the serodiagnosis of problem cases. Sera from 516 presumed normal persons, 686 pregnant women ancl 1345 patients with various diseases other than syphilis were screened with the standard VDRL procedure as described and recommanded by USPHS. Out of these, 475 of t.he presumed normal persons, 646 of the pregnant women and 1243 of the patient group wit;h various diseases other than syphilis v;ere serologically nonreactive and 10, 12 and Rl sera from each of the above groups, respectively, were found to be true syphilitc with definite evidence of clinical signs or history of syphilis. Thirty-one out of the presumed normal persons, 28 out of the pregnant women and 71 out of the patient group with various diseases other than syphilis showed either weakly reactive or reactive VDRI, in undiluted sera without definite evidence of syphilis and these 130 sera from 130 persons were the subject of the present study. The TPHA was carried out on these 130 sera. according to the ma.nual MEA-TP instructed by National Institute of Health, Japan. The reagents used in this study rvere rnanufactured and supplied hy the Fujizoki Pharmaceutical Co. Ten (32.3%) out of the R1 sera from preaumed normal persons, 11 (39.4%) out of the 28 sera from pregna.nt women a.nd 28 (69.4%) out of the patient group with various disea ses other then syphilis showed reactive TPHA. Eighty-seven of the total 130 sera showed weakly reactive VDRL so called rough result and 19 (21.8%) Of these 87 sera showed reactive TPHA, while 30(69.8%) of the 43 sera which showed reactive VDRL were found to be TPHA reactive. These results arc in general agreement with those of other investigators confirmed by the more complicated FTA-ABS or TPI. The overall incidence of syphilis was 3.87%, 3.35% and 4.38% in presumed normal persons, in pregnant women and in patient group with various diseases other than syphilis respectively. Considering the relative lack of study concerning to the false positive reactions in this country, these results may be helpful to the clinician to rnake a cert.ain diagnostic decision when they meet such a patient whose VDRL is weakly reactive or reactive in the absence of definite evidence of syphilis. The authors concluded that: the MHA-TP technique is easy in performance, economic and highly specific in serodiagnosis and that this technique is highly recommanded in this country. * The authors thank Fujizoki Pharrnaceutical Company, Tokyo, Japan which provided the TPHA reagents used in this study.

9.Therapeutic Effect fo Intra atrerial Reserpine in CRST Syndrome.
Jae Woo PARK ; Sook Ja SON ; Shil SHIN
Korean Journal of Dermatology 1981;19(6):983-987
The CRST syndrome, first reported by Winterbauer, represents a benign variant of scleroderma and consists of calcinosis(C), Raynauds phenomenon(R), sclerodactyly(S) and telangiectasia(T). The authors report a case of CRST syndrome confirmed by both clinical and histopathological findings. A 62-year-old female developed subcutaneous nodules on both elbow and knee joints, Raynauds phenomenon, sclerodactyly with acrosclerosis and scleroderrnatous changes on both hands and forearms and telangiectasia on the face, neck, and hands of 15 years duration, but she had no difficulty in swallowing. The authors treated a case of CRST syndrome with weekly intra-arterial administration of reserpine and were impressed not only by the marked loosening of the skin but also by the striking effect on the Raynauds phenornena; the latter disappeared within a few weeks of treatment.

Korean Journal of Child Health Nursing 1997;3(2):219-227
The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences in behavioral characteristics and their awareness of obese school children. The results were as follows : 1. In comparison with eating habits and food preference, the girls had more irregular breakfast and were likely to have vegetables/fruits than the boys. 2. In characteristics related to exercise and activities, boys did more exercise than girls. Particularly, in lunch free time, boys participated in playing various active excercise with friends, but girls participated in more non-active behaviors(such as, chattering, reading, or playing jack-stones). 3. In comparison with their awareness related to obese persons, about a half of boys had positive opinions(e, grong, healthy.), but about only 20% of girls had positive opinions.
