1.Some Statistical Considerations for the Estimation of Urinary Mercury Excretion in Normal Individuals.

Purpose of this study is to find out proper means of estimating the urinary mercury excretion the normal individuals. Whole void volume was collected every 2 hours beginning from 6 o'clock in the morning until 6 o'clock next morning. Mercury excretion in each urine specimen was measured by NIOSH recommended dithizone colorimetric method (Method No. : P & CAM 145). Urinary concentration of mercury was adjusted by two means : specific gravity of 1.024 and a gram of creatinine excretion per liter of urine comparing the data with the unadjusted ones. Mercury excretion in 24-hour urine specimen was calculated by adding the amounts measured with the hourly collected specimens of each individual. Statistical analysis of the urinary mercury excretion revealed the following results : 1. Frequency distribution curve of mercury excreted in urine of hourly specimens was best fitted to power function expressed in the form of y=ax(b), Adjustment of the urinary mercury concentration by creatinine excretion was shown to be superior (y=1674x(-1.52)), r(2)=0.95) over nonadjustment(y=2702x(-1.57)), r(2)=0.92) and adjustment by specific gravity of 1.024(y=4535x(-1.66), r(2)=0.93). 2. Both log-transformed mercury excretion in hourly voided specimens and mercury excretion itself in 24 hour specimens showed the normal distributions. 3. The frequency distribution of mercury adjusting the urinary concentration of mercury by creatinine excretion was best fitted to a theoretical normal distribution with the sample means and excretion was best fitted to a theoretical normal distribution with the sample means and standard deviation than those unadjusted or adjusted with specific gravity of 1,024. 4. Average urinary mercury excretions in 24-hour urine specimen in an individual were as follows : a) Unadjusted urinary mercury excretions. mean and standard deviation :18.6+/-13.68 microgramHg/liter. median : 16.0 microgramHg/liter. range : 0.0-55.10 microgramHg/liter. b) Adjusted with specific gravity. mean : 20.7+/-11.76 microgramHg/liter x 0.024/(S.G.-1.000). median : 20.7 microgramHg/liter x 0.024/(S.G.-1.000). range : 0.0-52.9 microgramHg/liter x 0.024/(S.G.-1.000). c) Adjuested with creatinine excretion. mean and standard deviation : 10.5+/-6.98 microgramHg/g creatinine/liter. median : 9.4 microgramHg/g creatinine/liter. range : 0.0-26.7 microgramHg/g creatinine/liter. 5. No statistically significant differences were found between means calculated from 24-hour urine specimens and those from hourly specimens transformed into logarithmic values. (P<0.05).

4.A Clinical Analysis on 186 Cases of Glaucoma.

The authors analysed statistically 186 cases of the glaucoma patients among 20,785 out-patients who visited to our eye clinic from Jan. 1957 to Dec. 1969. The incidence of the glaucoma was 0.895% which was remarkably lower than the other reports. The following results were obtained. 1) Among the 186 cases, there were 85 male and 101 female patients. 2) There was no significant difference in left and right eye. 3) 51-60 year age group was prevalent (49 cases). 4) The age group over 40 occupied 61.3%. 5) The open angle glaucoma was the highest incidence.

7.Dermographism ( IV ): The Prevalence in Atopic Dermatitis and Allergic Rhinitis.

The prevalences of dermographism in 106 patients with atopic dermatitis and 45 patients with allergic rhinitis were studied using a dermographic tester. The results are as follows : 1. Dermographism was more common in atopic dermatitis(17.0%) than in the general population(6.7%), but no significant difference was observed between allergic rhinitis(6.7%) and general population. 2. The prevalence rates of dermographism were not significantly correlated with the level of serum IgE in both atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis.

9.The Effects of Aerobic Exercise Therapy on Physical Functions in the Elderly.

PURPOSE: Designed to examine the effects of aerobic exercise therapy on elders' physical functions. METHODS: Selected from an elderly welfare center in an agricultural district located in N City. Thirty seven elders were selected in the experimental group and 38 in the control group, and all the subjects aged over 65. Collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS/PC 12.0 Win. Detailed data analysis methods were Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t-test, Mann-Whitney u-test, paired t-test, and Wilcoxon's rank sum test. RESULTS: The first hypothesis "The experimental group who had the aerobic exercise therapy will have greater development in lower leg muscular strength compared to the control group" was supported (t=8.95, p<.001). The second hypothesis "Aerobic exercise therapy participants will show greater development in lower leg endurance" was supported (t=6.12, p<.001). The third hypothesis "Aerobic exercise therapy participants will show greater development in flexibility" was supported (U=49.00, p<.001). The forth hypothesis "Aerobic exercise therapy participants will show greater development in balance" was supported (U=322.00, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The aerobic exercise therapy showed positive effects on physical functions of the elderly in a rural area.

10.Factors Influencing Run Away Impulse in Early Adolescents.

PURPOSE: This study carried out a preliminary analysis of available literature and used the ecological approach to define a research hypothesis with focus on individual, family, and school variables related to early adolescents' urge to run away. This study also aimed to examine the influence of each of these variables in order to build a forecast model showing which variables have more influential on early adolescents' urge to run away. METHODS: Materials were collected from 433 male and female fifth- and sixth-grade students at two schools in Gyeonggi Province. Analysis was carried out using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Frequency analysis, chi2-test, t-test, correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were conducted. RESULTS: The results indicate that personal factors related to runaway impulse are gender and previous runaway attempts, family-related factor family functionality, and school-related factor the area of stress from study. CONCLUSION: Based on the study results as above, individual, family, and school interventions need to be developed.
