1.Effects of Two Music Therapy Methods on Agitation and Anxiety among Patients Weaning off Mechanical Ventilation: A Pilot Study

PURPOSE: The feasibility and differential effects of two music therapy methods (interventions with preferred music vs. classical relaxation music) were done to examine the effects on agitation and anxiety in patients weaning off mechanical ventilation. METHODS: This pilot study was conducted using a crossover design. Six patients listened to preferred music choices and classical relaxation music. Anxiety scores were measured using the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: Patients showed a significant decrease in agitation and anxiety after both the preferred and classical relaxation music interventions. The difference in the effects of preferred music and that of classical relaxation music was not significant. As for feasibility, patients exhibited a change in agitated behaviors after the music interventions by not trying to take off medical devices and quietly listening to the music, and by smiling and moving lips along with the lyrics while listening. CONCLUSION: Music interventions which centered on either patients' preferences or classical relaxation music to enhance relaxation, helped reduce agitation and anxiety during the mechanical ventilation weaning process.

2.Effects of Aroma Hand Massage on Stress, Fatigue, and Sleep in Nursing Students

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of aroma hand massage on stress, fatigue, and sleep in sophomore nursing students. METHODS: This study was a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group and a pre-post test was used. Thirty-seven sophomore nursing students were recruited. The experimental group (n=18) underwent 40 minutes aroma hand massage which was provided by the research assistant. The research assistant was trained with a video clip for aroma hand massage that was developed by Korea Aroma Association. Aroma oil contained lavender essential oil and sweet orange oil mixed with a jojoba oil base. The control group (n=19) did not receive any other treatments related aroma and massage. RESULTS: Significant improvements were exhibited in scores for stress (t=−2.61, p=.013) and fatigue in the experimental group (t=−2.05, p=.047) compared to the control group. However, differences in sleep between two groups were not statistically significant (t=1.23, p=.277) between two groups. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that aroma hand massage could be useful to decrease stress and fatigue levels for sophomore nursing students. Therefore, results of this study can be used as a basis of health care programs for reducing stress of nursing students.

3.Effects of Self-evaluation using Smartphone Recording on Nursing Students' Competency in Nursing Skills, Satisfaction, and Learning Motivations: Focusing on Foley Catheterization.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of self-evaluation using smartphone recording on competency in nursing skills, satisfaction and learning motivations in nursing students'. The setting was the open laboratory hours. METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre/post-test design was conducted in September 2015. The participants were 82 sophomore nursing students from one University. The experimental group did self-evaluation by watching recorded video clips of their performance. The control group did not have any self-evaluation. The primary outcomes were scores from the foley catheterization checklist, scores from a student satisfaction tool, and scores from a learning motivation tool. Data were analyzed using χ² test, Fisher's exact test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. RESULTS: There was a significant higher mean score in levels of satisfaction by students in the experimental group compared to the control group (t=2.26, p=.027). In addition, improvement in communication skills by the experimental group was significantly higher than improvement in the control group (t=3.96, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Findings show that self-evaluation using smartphone recordings has positive effects on increasing both communication skills and satisfaction with practice during open laboratory hours. These results indicate that, self-evaluation using smartphone recording is useful as a supplement to traditional open laboratory education.

4.Influence of Nursing Students' Anxiety during Simulation Training on Personal Satisfaction of Simulation, Self-efficacy, Clinical Competence.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to identify nursing students' levels of anxiety in simulation based nursing education and to understand the relationship of anxiety and personal satisfaction of simulation, self-efficacy, and clinical competence during simulation. METHODS: This study was a descriptive study with 84 senior nursing students at a private university in South Korea. Level of anxiety was measured with STAI (the State- Trait Anxiety Inventory) prior to the stimulation practice. After the debriefing, satisfaction scores were measured with SSE (Satisfaction with Simulation Experience scale), self-efficacy scores with the modified measurement developed by Roh and Park, and scores for clinical skills with a scale developed by the Korea Association of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. RESULTS: Nursing students exhibitedmoderate to severe anxiety in simulation practice (Mean 49.51, SD 8.60). Self-efficacy was negatively correlated to anxiety (r=-.25, p=.022). CONCLUSION: Decreasing students' anxiety levels needs to be addressed to increase the self-efficacy of the simulation practice.

5.A Review II for Standardization of Textbooks of Fundamentals of Nursing: Medication Administration, Infection Control, Pressure Injury

Purpose:
The purposes of this study were to analyze and compare the textbooks of fundamentals of nursing and practice in order to standardize them for medication administration, infection control, and pressure injury.
Methods:
The current study is a literature review of the ten textbooks published after 2013. Ten textbooks were the ones selected by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute as major textbooks. Three items were reviewed: medication administration, infection control, and pressure injury, with a focus on differences in numbers, range, direction, and others.
Results:
For medication administration, there were some discrepancies in the size of needle and syringe, maximum dosage depending on injection methods, replacement period of catheter and infusion set, depth of insertion for vaginal medication administration. For infection control, items with discrepancies included length of time for hand washing, concentration of chemical sterilant, frequency of ventilation to prevent airborne disease, distance to prevent droplet-borne infection, the latent period of infectious disease, and methods to treat medical wastes. For pressure injury, the discrepancies were exhibited in the degree and duration of pressure for pressure injuries, range of scores for risks in pressure injury assessment tools, and temperature of the solution to irrigate pressure injuries.
Conclusion
Standardized textbooks for these three parts will be useful teaching aide for students and nurses to carry out consistent and professional nursing for patients’ safety.
6.Famotidine-induced reversal of meperidine-related serotonin syndrome: a case report.

Serotonin syndrome is an unexpected fatal adverse event related to serotonergic medication. This case report is the first report describing the possible treatment effect of famotidine on serotonin syndrome. Furthermore, this is the first case report of serotonin syndrome induced by meperidine alone in a patient with no previous history suggesting a susceptibility to serotonin syndrome. A 70-year-old male with no recent history of serotonergic drug use presented with severe serotonin syndrome following ureteroscopy, possibly due to postoperative meperidine administration. The patient's symptoms included hypertension, tachycardia, tachypnea, hyperthermia, myoclonus, diaphoresis, retching, nausea, agitation, and semicoma mentality with no pupillary light reflex. Symptoms began to subside immediately after the administration of intravenous famotidine for prevention of aspiration pneumonia, with mental and neurological symptoms showing improvement initially, followed by autonomic symptoms. This case report suggests that the histamine type 2 receptor antagonist famotidine may be an effective emergency treatment for serotonin syndrome.

8.Periodontal Disease and Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in Pregnant Women.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify relationships of periodontal disease and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in pregnant women. METHODS: The participants in this study were 129 pregnant women. Data were collected using questionnaires of characteristics of the participants and subjective perception of periodontal disease and a dentist's assessment of periodontal disease. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. RESULTS: The physical QoL showed significant negative correlation with subjective perception of periodontal disease (r=-.21, p=.013). Mental QoL had significant negative correlations with subjective perception of periodontal disease (r=-.32, p<.001) and objective periodontal disease (r=-.34, p<.001). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that pregnant women who had a history of abortion and had higher subjective perception of periodontal disease tended to report lower levels of physical QoL. Pregnant women whose age are between 30-34 years and higher subjective perception and objective periodontal disease tended to report lower mental QoL. CONCLUSION: To improve HRQoL of pregnant women, nurses should pay attention on the status of periodontal disease. Careful assessment of oral healthy behaviors and proper intervention for oral health of pregnant women are needed to enhance HRQoL of pregnant women.

9.The Effects of Medical Students' Achievement Goal Orientations on Affective Attitudes towards Anatomy Learning.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate how medical students' achievement goal orientations towards anatomy class influence perceived affect towards anatomy learning. METHODS: Participants were 124 medical students. Students' self-report measures were used for the assessment of their achievement goal orientations, perceived value, interests, effort, tension, test anxiety, and negative dissection experiences. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were used for the data analyses. RESULTS: Students with high levels of mastery-approach goals displayed high interests, values, and efforts while they showed low levels of tension, test anxiety, and negative dissection experiences. In contrast, students with high mastery- and performance-avoidance goals showed high levels of tension and/or test anxiety. Students' performance-approach goals are positively associated with both high effort and high negative dissection experiences. CONCLUSION: These findings offer theoretical and practical implications for anatomy teaching and learning by suggesting that students' learning experiences vary in terms of students' achievement goal orientations which may make differences in students' psychological experiences in a class.

10.A Case of a Glomus Tumor Arising in an Unusual Site.

A glomus tumor, is a benign neoplasm, which is derived from a normal glomus body, and participates in thermal regulation. This tumor is relatively uncommon and usually occurs in the peripheral soft tissue, most frequently in the digits, where the glomus bodies are normally present. We experienced a case of a glomus tumor in a 60-year-old man who had a solitary, dome-shaped, grayish blue-colored papule on his back. This was present in an area where a normal glomus body might not usually occur.
