1.Correlation between vitamin C intake and periodontal disease: The Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2010.

OBJECTIVES: Vitamin C is important for maintaining periodontal health. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between vitamin C intake and periodontal disease in adults. METHODS: The data collected from the 2010 Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was retrospectively reviewed. The final sample included 2,878 subjects, aged between 30 and 59 years. These patients had also undergone the required oral examinations and had taken health and nutrition surveys. RESULTS: The incidence of periodontal disease was 24.4%. The patients' gender, age, spouse, education level, smoking habits, brushing frequency, and vitamin C intake were considered to be significant risk factors for periodontal disease based on complex sampling analysis. The multivariate-adjusted odds ratio for occurrence of periodontal disease was 0.69 (95% confidence interval, 0.477-0.987) when the vitamin C intake of subjects in quartile 4 (Q4) and Q1 were compared (P=0.0421). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that vitamin C intake is significantly associated with periodontal disease, and also provide information that will aid in the prevention of periodontal disease.

2.A factor of periodontal disease and dietary patterns in Korean adults using data from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V.

OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to identify the socioeconomic factors, health behavior factors and dietary patterns that have an influence on the periodontal disease in adults. METHODS: This study used data collected from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES V-1). The final sample included 2,386 subjects who were 30-59 years old and who had completed the necessary health examinations, the health behaviors survey and nutrition survey. RESULTS: Eleven dietary patterns emerged from the factor analysis with different factor loading. After controlling for potential confounders, multiple logistic regression analysis of the dietary patterns showed that 'legumes/mixed grains' and 'instant foods' affected the periodontal disease. Lower consumption of 'legumes/mixed grains' and higher consumption of 'instant foods' were significantly associated only with an increased risk of periodontal disease. CONCLUSIONS: In the light of the results of this study, it appears pretty likely that the risk of developing periodontal disease can be reduced by changing a person's dietary patterns.

3.Influence of Fatigue, Depression and Anxiety on Quality of Life in Pregnant Women with Preterm Labor.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of fatigue, depression and anxiety on quality of life in pregnant women with preterm labor. METHODS: With a survey design, data were collected from 138 mothers who were admitted at a hospital in Seoul, between June 2014 and September 2015. Instruments used to collect the data for the study were: Fatigue Continuum Form, Depression anxiety stress scale (DASS-21) and maternal postpartum quality of life (MAPP-QOL). RESULTS: The mean fatigue score was 68.30 with 50.7% of women being depressed and 79.7% of the 138 women being anxious. The mean quality of life was 18.92 with quality of life being associated with fatigue, depression and anxiety. Depression and fatigue explained 26% of the variance in quality of life. CONCLUSION: Depression and fatigue adversely affected women's quality of life. It is important to address appropriate management of depression and fatigue in order to improve quality of life in pregnant women with preterm labor.

4.Cost-Effectiveness of Drug-Eluting vs. Bare-Metal Stents in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease from the Korean National Health Insurance Database.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the use of drug-eluting stents (DESs), as compared with bare-metal stents (BMSs) in Korea. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 2000 and December 2007. Subjects were stent-treated for the first time between 2004 and 2005, with four years of follow-up (2004-2007) (n=43674). The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was used to calculate the costs of DESs compared with BMSs among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Cost-effectiveness was assessed with effectiveness defined as a reduction in major adverse cardiac events after six months and after one, two, three, and four years. RESULTS: The total costs of a DESs were 674108 Korean won (KRW) higher than that of a BMSs at the end of the follow-up; 13635 thousand KRW per patient treated with DESs and 12960 thousand KRW per patient treated with BMSs. The ICER was 256315 per KRW/death avoided and 293090 per KRW/re-stenting avoided among the CAD patients at the end of the follow-up. CONCLUSION: The ICER for the high-risk patients was lower than that for the low-risk patients. The use of DESs is clinically more useful than the use of BMSs for CAD and myocardial infarction patients, especially for those considered to be high-risk patients in Korea.

5.Complete genome sequence of a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus schleiferi strain from canine otitis externa in Korea

The increase in canine skin and soft tissue infections, such as pyoderma and otitis, caused by Staphylococcus schleiferi strains, is of significant zoonotic concern. In this study, we report the first complete genome sequence for a methicillin-resistant clinical isolate of S. schleiferi (MRSS) designated as SS4, obtained from a dog with otitis externa, in Korea. The genome of SS4 strain was of 2,539,409 bp and presented high G+C content ratio (35.90%) with no plasmid. Comparative analysis of SS4 genome revealed that it is closely related to 2142-05 and 5909-02 strains isolated from the canine skin infections in the USA.

8.Effects of Lymphovenous Anastomosis Surgery Using Ultrasonography in Lymphedema From a Pressure Perspective

Objective:
To analyze the effects of lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) surgery after 1 year using the elastic index (EI) and volume.
Methods:
This study was a retrospective study of 41 patients, with lymphedema, who underwent LVA surgery between July 2018 and June 2020. Limb circumference, used to determine the volume of the limb with lymphedema, and EI, which reflects tissue stiffness and measured using ultrasonography were measured for each patient before and 1 year after LVA surgery. To examine the effect of LVA, differences in the preoperative and 1-year postoperative volumes and EIs were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Results:
The mean volume and EI of the dominant site in upper-extremity lymphedema were 2,309.4 cm3 and 1.4, respectively, preoperatively and 2,237.1 cm3 and 0.9, respectively, at 1 year postoperatively. The mean volume and EI difference of the dominant site 1 year after surgery was -16.6 cm3 (p=0.22) and -0.5 (p<0.001). The mean volume and EI of dominant site in lower-extremity lymphedema were 6,137.0 cm3 and 1.2, respectively, preoperatively, and 5,832.6 cm3 and 1.1, respectively, at 1 year postoperatively. The mean volume and EI difference of the dominant site 1 year postoperatively were -320.9 cm3 (p=0.04) and -0.2 (p=0.09), respectively.
Conclusion
LVA surgery is more effective in reducing pressure than in reducing volume, which may be helpful in preventing the progression of lymphedema.
9.Design and Implementation of a Cohort for Quality Management of Medical Education: A Case Study from Konyang University College of Medicine

This study shares details on the operating process and results of the cohort of students and graduates that was designed and implemented at Konyang University College of Medicine in Daejeon and discusses future directions for cohort establishment and improvement. First, Konyang University College of Medicine established the necessity and defined the purpose of cohort design and implementation. A task force was formed to establish guidelines for analysis targets, procedures, reports, and data management, and cohort operation was classified as a quality control activity. Data were collected through surveys of current students and graduates, and data generated during the curriculum were collected, analyzed, and reported every 2 years. The cohort data collection and analysis methods are designed by the Department of Medical Education, and data collection is carried out by the administrative team and each committee. Data management and analysis are handled by the Center for Medical Education Support, and analysis and reporting are conducted by the Department of Medical Education. Various members of the medical school are working to collect and analyze data, report findings, provide feedback, and improve. In the future, we plan to advance database computerization and work toward more effective data analysis. Cohort operation should not be another burden for medical schools; instead, it is hoped that operating cohorts will be a meaningful activity to increase the effectiveness of medical education and help in the operation and policy decisions of medical schools.
10.Peripapillary Perfusion Analysis Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Patients with Normal Tension Glaucoma

Purpose:
This study aimed to assess the difference in the vascular parameters of perfusion in the optic nerve head in normal tension glaucoma (NTG) across disease stages using optical coherence tomography angiography and its correlation with peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness.
Methods:
In this retrospective study, 83 eyes with varying stages of NTG (25 mild, 31 moderate, and 27 severe) and 90 healthy eyes were enrolled. The perfusion density (PD) and flux index (FI) of the optic nerve head divided into four sectors were determined. We compared the vascular, structural, and functional parameters between normal and glaucomatous eyes and performed a subgroup analysis among the NTG stages. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to assess the topographic correlation between vascular parameters and RNFL thickness.
Results:
PD and FI were significantly decreased in the NTG group. Subgroup analysis revealed a significant decrease in vascular parameters in most regions in the NTG group, except for the nasal PD and temporal FI. Post hoc analysis showed a significant decrease in PD in the inferior region across all severity levels (mild vs. moderate, p = 0.012; moderate vs. severe, p = 0.012; mild vs. severe, p < 0.001). PD and FI were strongly correlated with RNFL thickness in all quadrants (all p < 0.001), with the strongest correlation observed in the inferior region.
Conclusions
Vascular parameters were significantly decreased in glaucomatous eyes, and the degree of decrease in vascular parameters was proportional to glaucoma severity. Peripapillary perfusion analysis using optical coherence tomography angiography may complement other measurements used for glaucoma diagnosis.
