1.Dosimetry and MIRD for Re-188 Liquid Balloons.

Re-188 is suitable for endovascular liquid-balloon brachytherapy for the prevention of restenosis after angioplasty. Re-188 was concentrated to 3700 MBq/ml and labeled with DTPA. According to dosimetric calculation, it took 420 seconds using Re-188 solution with concentration of 3700 MBq/ml to irradiate 17.6 Gy to the target at 1 mm from the balloon surface. Software was made to estimate the irradiation time. MIRD calculation with dynamic bladder model yielded the whole body dose of Re-188-DTPA as 0.005mGy/MBq in case of balloon rupture and release of the whole amount into the blood.

2.A Study of Relationship between Exposure to Manganese Chloride and Malondialdehyde in Rat Tissues.

OBJECTIVES: This research was intended to investigate the relationship between manganese and malodndialdehyde concentration in tissues of rats exposed to maganese chloride. METHODS: The study groups were 12 manganese treated rats and 9 control rats. Manganese treated rats were given intraperitoneally manganese chloride (Mn, 4 mg/kg) daily for a period of 30 days except Sunday. Control rats were injected 1ml of saline. The plasma manganese concentrations of rats were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The tissue manganese concentration was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Malondialdehyde, the product of lipid peroxidation was determined by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. The plasma malondialdehyde was determined by gas chromatography with mass-detector. Protein concentration was quantified by ultraviolet-visible spectrometry and was used for the compensation of tissue malondialdehyde and manganese concentration. RESULTS: Manganese concentrations of plasma, brain, liver, and pancreas were very significantly higher in the manganese-treated rats than in the control rats. Malondialdehyde concentration of plasma, brain, and pacrease were significantly higher in the manganese-treated rats than in the control rats. The concentration of malondialdehyde was correlated with manganese levels in plasma, brain and pancreas. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained as above, it was concluded that the malondialdehyde, product of lipid peroxidation was related to the cell death due to dosing excess manganese.

6.The Study on Inhibit Activity of Dermatophytes by Some Salt Solutions.

The study was made in order to investigate the minimal inhibit concentration (M.I.C) to Trichophyton(T.) gypseum and Trichophyton rubrum by same salt solution(ie: NaCl, KCl and Sodium thiosulfate). The stanis were obtained at the out-patient clinic of Seoul National University hospital. The results are as follows: 1. The M.I.C. of NaCl manifest 10%, and Trichophyton rubrum shows more higher than that of T. gypseum. 2. The M.I.C. of Sodiurn thiosulfate manifest 10%, and T. gypseum shows more higher M.I.C. than that of T. rubrum. 3. The M.I.C. of KCI manifest 15% for T.rubrum and shows 20% for T. gypseum.

7.Higher Cognitive Functions and Psychiatric Disorders.

Higher cognitive functions refer to the highest level of human intellectual functioning, including formation, reasoning, and executive functions. The executive functions can be conceptualized as having four components ; volition, planning, purposive action, and effective performance. Because higher cognitive functions represent the most advanced stages of intellectual development, they are often highly susceptible to the effects of brain injuries and mental disorders. The ability to perform effectively within the environment is determined in large part by an individual's adequacy in performing such higher-order function. Especially executive functions are necessary for appropriate, socially responsible, and effectively sell-serving adult conduct. Therefore, an assessment of the psychiatric patient's performance in these areas will provide useful diagnostic information, as well as information concerning social and vocational prognosis.

8.Effects of 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate on the Oral Hygiene of Endotracheal Intubation Patients at Intensive Care Units.

BACKGROUND: This study tested the efficacy of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate for improving oral hygiene in intubated intensive care patients. METHODS: In a group of 57 ventilated patients, 29 received normal saline (NS) for oral hygiene, and 28 were treated with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG). Data on oral bacterial colonization was collected for 11 months from October 2005 to August 2006. Tests of oral hygiene and oral microorganism culture were performed on the day of the ventilation, and repeated on days 4, 8, and 12. RESULTS: Oral hygiene was significantly improved in the CHG group compared to that in the NS group (P<.001). Further, all patients (100%) in the NS group tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus on the 12th day after the endotracheal intubation, whereas only 42.9% (P=0.026) of the CHG group were positive. The NS group also had higher isolation rates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at 66.7% on the 8th day after intubation and 87.5% on the 12th day. At these same intervals, the CHG group had isolation rates of 29.4% (P=.028) and 14.3% (P=.010) respectively. CONCLUSION: The longer the period of endotracheal intubation, the more effective the 0.12% CHG treatment was for improved oral hygiene and reduction of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa colonization when compared to treatment with NS.

10.Reconstruction of the Paralysed Shoulder by the Saha's Method: Report of a Case

Treatment of a paralysed or flail shoulder falls into two categories; arthrodesis and reconstructive surgery. Of these the latter is preferable in view of mobility. Most authors have tried to reconstruct the paralysed abductor by transferring the trapezius muscle only. The final result of these procedures were poor in severe paralysis of the deltoid muscle or combined paralysis of the deltoid and the rotator cuff muscles. Noting the importance of the action of the rotator cuff muscles in abduction of the shoulder, Saha, in 1967, recommended simultaneous reconstruction of tne paralysed deltoid and rotator cuff muscles. We treated a case of paralysed shoulder that followed poliomyelitis by the Saha meshod, i.e., transfer of the trapezius muscle for the paralysed deltoid, transfer of the levator scapulae muscle for the supraspinatus, transfer of the pectoralis minor muscle for the subscapularis, all in one stage. Duration of the follow up was 3 months and the initial result seemed to be good in view of stability, mobility, and abductor power.
