Adhesive forces between the retina and the retinal pigment epithelium, which is mainta ined by active mechanisms unique for living animals, deteriorates rapidly after death and leads to spontaneous retinal detachment. Change of retinal adhesiveness in rabbits after death was investigated using a new method. Retinal detachment was induced by applying various levels of aspiration power from 0 to 1OO mmHg to the vitreous cavity using a vitrectomy instrument immediately after the rabbit was killed without enucleation. And the time required for creating the retinal detachment was measured. Retinal adhesiveness deteriorated and spontaneous retinal detachment occurred 28 minutes and 35 seconds after death confirming the active adhesion between the retina and the retinal pigment epithelium before death Increase of aspiration power led to shortening of time required for creating retinal detachment. From aspiration powers of 0 to 100 mmHg, the common logarithm of time required for retinal detachment was inversely proportional to the aspiration power [IogY = 1.45215 - 0.01113X, (R2=0.99041), X: aspiration power (mmHg), Y: time required for creating retinal detachment (minutes)]. Thus, presumed time of retinal detachment could be estimated between the aspiration powers of 0 to 100 mmHg.

BACKGROUND: Computerized topography(CT) is the method of choice for establishing patients with abdominal and/or pelvic trauma. However, the sensitivity of CT far detecting bladder rupture has been questioned. We investigated the roles of CT as the initial evaluation of abdominal and pelvic trauma in diagnosis of bladder rupture. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records and radiographs of 53 patients with bladder rupture for last 5 year. And among them, all radiographs of 30 patients who underwent both CT and retrograde cystography were evaluated independently by two urologists who had no knowledge of the patients' final diagnosis. RESULTS: Among 30 patients, all of patients were correctly diagnosed by retrograde cystography, but the CT diagnosis was correct in only 23 patients(76.7%), who were 17 patients(85.0%) with intraperitoneal rupture and 6 patients(60%) with extraperitoneal rupture. And of the 7 patients who were negative by the CT, all showed the sign of inadequate bladder distension. CONCLUSION: We suggest that CT, if properly performed with adequate bladder filling, is as sensitive for detection of bladder injuries as conventional cystography. Especially, in trauma patients with hematuria and suspected other organ injury, CT-cystography with retrograde filing may be as accurate as conventional cystography and obviate the need for an additional plain film cystography,

Primary carcinoma of the uterine tube is one of the least common gynecologic malignancies with a reported incidence of approximately 0.3%. As a result of it, the experience of any one physian is limited. Almost all cases are adenocarcinoma and the cilinical presentation is generally nonspecific, of which the most common symptom is postmenopausal vaginal bleeding. Primary fallopian tube carcinima is infrequently diagnosed before explolatory laparotomy and the majority of patients have extensive disease at diagnosis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the learning experience, knowledge, and performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in newly graduated nurses, and to identify differences related to learning experience. METHODS: The participants were 114 new nurses in the hospital. They were asked to complete a questionnaire, which included CPR learning experience. They were evaluated by a written test and a skill test using a manikin and check list. RESULTS: All participants attended CPR lectures and underwent practice while in university. Only 12.28% of participants were taught by a certified Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor. The mean scores of the written and skill tests were 79.82+/-12.69 and 64.41+/-11.71, respectively. The nurses lacked CPR knowledge related to checking breathing, the frequency of 30 chest compressions, compression rate, and automated external defibrillator use. They also lacked skill in performing CPR related to checking breathing and pulse and giving 2 breaths. CPR performance differed according to learning time (p=.047) and BLS educator (p=.029). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study reveal that CPR performance by newly graduated nurses is poor and suggest that CPR education by trained instructors, practice-based education, and reeducation programs must be provided to newly graduated nurses in the hospital.

The effects of cortisone administration and whole body irradiation by X-ray upon mesenteric mast cells of intact and adrenalectomized albino rats were studied. In intact rats, the administration of cortisone (50mg./kg) and whole body irradiation by X-ray (800r) caused severe degranulation and disruption of mesenteric mast cells within 24 hours. However their degranulation and disrupting effects upon mesenteric mast cells were markedly inhibited after the removal of the adrenal gland. Although the adrenalectomy alone hardly caused these morphological changes of mesenteric mast cells of the albino rats. According to this experiment it is fairly clear that the effects of cortisone and whole body X-ray irradiation inducing degranulation and disruption of mesenteric mast cells of the albino rats, were not direct phenomena but they indirectly affected the mesenteric mast cells through some special mechanism mediated by the adrenal gland.
