1.Progress of WTO Negotiation and KMA's Countermeasures.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2002;45(9):1105-1109
Although the issue on trade in professional services has been mentioned as one of the built-in agendas since 1995, the Ministry of Health and Welfare(MOHW) formed the committee on WTO DDA(New Development Agenda in Doha) last November and there is no countermeasure on a government level by the time. The Korean Medical Association(KMA) has been formed the WTO DDA committee composed of standing directors and experts on this last January and actively working at present. Last April, the WTO DDA Joing Committee of Associations of Healthcare Sectors has been established by six associations, such as the Korean Medical Association(KMA), the Korean Dental Association(KDA), the Association Korean Oriental Medicine(AKOM), the Korean Nurses Association(KNA), the Korean Hospital Association(KHA), the Korean Dental Hospital Association(KDHA), and they have closely collaborated. The WTO DDA Committee of KMA has submitted the request list to the government last May on the basis of results of four times meetings for special lectures and discussion, three times surveys, and the research paper. The request list of KMA includes the contents of mode 2(consumption abroad) and 4(presence of natural persons). For the mode 3(commercial presence), it is suspended because it is related with the permission of profit-making corporation on healthcare sector which is prohibited at present. The government announced 19 countries has submitted the request list to Korea as of august 1 and among them, the healthcare relevant requests are from China and Poland. Especially China is requesting as a whole, including the education sector on oriental medicine. On this point, the main subjects which the KMA should established its position urgently are the issues regarding the permission of profit-making corporation and who should give and manage the medical license. For this, the KMA will continue to collect and analyze the relevant information and will relay these information to the members.

7.Observation of Soft-Rot Wood Degradation Caused by Higher Ascomyceteous fungi.
Mycobiology 2000;28(1):47-50
The capability of higher ascomyceteous fungi to cause typical soft-rot decay for wood under laboratory conditions is reviewed and discussed. Fungi tested were extremely active in the decomposition of timbers. Scanning electron micrographs illustrated typical soft-rot decay pattern of higher wood decay ascomycetes, with the exception of H. trugodes that caused white-rot decay. Most of the fungi tested could be grouped as soft-rot fungi that showed typical soft-rot type II. Hypha confined primarily to the resin canals in softwoods or vessel elements in hardwoods and spread tracheid to tracheid via pits of cell wall to cell wall with mechanical force.

Human epithelial cell line immortalized by Ad12-SV40 hybrid virus was transfected with plasmid containing HPV-16 via calcium-phosphate method. Subsequently, 8 clonal cell lines were obtained after G418 selection. Among these clonal cells, clonal cell-4(C-4) and clonal cell-6(G-6) showed increases of tumorigenic cellular properties such as saturation density, soft agar colony formation and cell aggregation. Morphological alteration such as appearane of foci was observed on these two clones after passage 6 and 7(50 to 55 days after transfection). When clonal cells and control cells were treated with MNNG(0.01ug/ml), both C-4 and C-6 showed increases of tumorigenic cellular properties and the level of increase was much more elevated as compared to clonal cells prior to MNNG treatment. Appearance of foci formation was observed in C-4 and C-6 after passage-6. After passage-8, control cells and all clonal cells showed morphological alterations. It seems that treatment of cells containing HPV-16 DNA with MNNG increases tumorigenic properties of the cells and expedite morphological transformations. (continue)
