Purpose:
The aim of this study is to compare the detection ability of quality of life (QoL) changes and responsiveness of the KOrean QUality of life in Stomach cancer patients Study group (KOQUSS)-40 and European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ).
Materials and Methods:
A multicenter prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate QoL changes after various gastrectomies between January 2021 and April 2022. Participants were instructed to complete the KOQUSS-40 and EORTC QLQ-C30/STO22 preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. QoL changes over time and QoL responsiveness were assessed for each questionnaire.
Results:
Data from 491 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer at 22 institutions were analyzed. The summary scores of the KOQUSS-40 and EORTC QLQ-STO22 showed significant differences between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups (p=0.044 and p=0.038, respectively), but no difference was observed for the EORTC QLQ-C30. Dysphagia on the KOQUSS-40 was significantly different between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups (p=0.031); however, dysphagia on the EORTC QLQ-STO22 did not differ. The responsiveness of the KOQUSS-40 was similar to that of the EORTC QLQ in patients who experienced ≥ 10% body weight loss, but approximately 10% less in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy than the EORTC QLQ.
Conclusion
KOQUSS-40 has several advantages over EORTC QLQ-C30/STO22 when comparing QoL between the total and proximal gastrectomy groups. The findings provide information for researchers investigating the QoL of patients who have undergone curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer.
2.Isoquercitrin induces melanogenesis in B16F10 melanoma cells and zebrafish via the p38 and PKA/CREB signaling pathways: an experimental study

Background:
Isoquercitrin (IQ), a flavonoid with anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiallergic properties, exhibits dual effects on B16F10 melanoma cells by suppressing cell viability and inducing hyperpigmentation. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying IQ-induced melanogenesis in vitro and in vivo, highlighting the potential of IQ in the treatment of vitiligo.
Methods:
B16F10 melanoma cells and zebrafish were treated with various IQ concentrations and melanogenesis was evaluated using western blotting, a tyrosinase activity assay, and microscopic observation. In addition, signaling pathway modulators and IQ were used to confirm the signaling pathways involved in IQ-induced melanogenesis.
Results:
IQ treatment of B16F10 melanoma cells enhanced tyrosinase activity and upregulated melanogenesis-associated proteins, including microphthalmia-associated transcription factor and tyrosinase, via the p38 and protein kinase A (PKA)/cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB) signaling pathways. Cotreatment with pathway-specific inhibitors (SB203580 for p38 and H89 for PKA/CREB) attenuated melanogenesis, whereas forskolin (a PKA/CREB activator) enhanced melanogenesis, confirming the involvement of these signaling pathways. In zebrafish, IQ treatment significantly increased melanophore production in the dorsal region following hypopigmentation induction with 1-phenyl-2-thiourea. Similar to that in B16F10 melanoma cells, SB203580 and H89 suppressed IQ-induced pigmentation, whereas forskolin enhanced it.
Conclusion
These findings demonstrate that IQ promotes melanogenesis in vitro and in vivo through activation of the p38 and PKA/CREB signaling pathways, supporting its potential as a therapeutic agent for vitiligo.
3.Psychological Treatments for Adult Patients with Anorexia Nervosa in Korea: A Retrospective Study

Objective:
International treatment guidelines recommend psychotherapy as the first-line treatment for anorexia nervosa (AN). Adaptation of Western evidence-based treatments to different cultures through personalization has become increasingly important, but evidence remains limited. This study examined the feasibility and effectiveness of AN outpatient psychotherapies in Korea.
Methods:
A total of 160 adult patients diagnosed with AN (mean age = 25.3 years) were recruited from an eating disorder (ED) clinic in Korea. They received one of the following psychotherapy programs: motivational enhancement therapy with nutrition (MET with nutrition) (n = 47); Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA) augmented by New Maudsley Model for Collaborative Care (NMCC) (n = 20); or Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) (n = 93). Treatments were administered face-to-face by trained therapists, following protocols tailored to each individual. Demographic and ED‐related clinical data were collected through standardized interviews and questionnaires at baseline and at the end of treatment.
Results:
Overall dropout rate was 40.3%, with a lower rate observed in MANTRA augmented by NMCC and SSCM than MET with nutrition. All three psychotherapies increased body mass index (BMI), with minimal group differences.Individuals with lower baseline BMI and those who attended more sessions experienced greater BMI increases across all psychotherapies.
Conclusion
Psychotherapies for AN were feasible and showed promise in terms of effectiveness among Korean patients.Despite comparable BMI increases, the therapies led by experienced therapists and with greater personalization had lower dropout rates. Further studies using randomized controlled trials are needed while controlling for variables outside treatments.
4.SGLT2 Inhibitors as Systemic Metabolic Modulators: Linking Glucose Excretion to Liver Function Restoration

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have emerged as paradigm-shifting therapeutics that extend beyond glycemic regulation, to conferring profound hepatometabolic benefits. This review delineates the multifaceted mechanisms underlying metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), with an emphasis on systemic metabolic remodeling, mitochondrial protection, and intracellular calcium restoration. By promoting glucosuria-induced energy depletion, SGLT2 inhibition alleviates insulin resistance, suppresses hepatic lipogenesis, and activates adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)–sirtuin 1 (SIRT1)–peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) coactivator-1α pathways that reprogram hepatocellular metabolism toward achieving lipid oxidation and autophagy. Mechanistically, SGLT2 inhibitors restore intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis via sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 2 (SERCA2) activation, mitigating endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and normalizing Ca2+–phosphoinositide (PIP)–protein kinase B (AKT) signaling, collectively reinforcing insulin responsiveness and ER-mitochondrial crosstalk. Clinically, these effects translate into consistently reducing hepatic fat, aminotransferases, and fibrosis markers in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients with MASLD. Furthermore, SGLT2 inhibitors uniquely integrate renal energy regulation with hepatic resilience through the Ca2+–PIP–SERCA axis, positioning them as prototype systemic modulators of metabolic homeostasis. Future translational efforts should refine patient stratification using metabolomic and Ca2+-imaging biomarkers to delineate therapeutic responders and advance next-generation SGLT2 analogs targeting Ca2+-dependent metabolic signaling. Collectively, SGLT2 inhibitors represent a new metabolic therapeutic class that unify glucose, lipid, and Ca2+ regulation to restore hepatocellular functions in metabolic liver diseases.
5.Influencing Factors of Self-Regulation, Interpersonal Skills, and Intrinsic Motivation on Clinical Field Adaptation among Novice Nurses

Purpose:
This study aimed to identify the levels of self-regulation, interpersonal skills, intrinsic motivation, and clinical field adaptation among novice nurses, and to examine the correlations between these variables and their effects on clinical field adaptation.
Methods:
This study included 175 novice nurses who had between 3 and 36 months of clinical experience working from one tertiary hospital in J City and one general hospital in C City, G Province. Data were collected from November 28, 2024 to February 25, 2025. Data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS/WIN 27.0 program.
Results:
Clinical field adaptation showed statistically significant differences were observed by gender (t=2.07, p=.040), total clinical experience (F=3.61, p=.029), and current department (t=-2.50, p=.013). Clinical field adaptation was positively correlated with self-regulation (r=.56, p<.001), interpersonal skills (r=.33, p<.001), and intrinsic motivation (r=.61, p<.001); furthermore, these three variables were also positively correlated with each other. The factor with the greatest effect on clinical field adaptation was intrinsic motivation (β=.45, p<.001), followed by self-regulation (β=.28, p<.001), and current department (β=.14, p=.020). These factors accounted for 48.0% of the variance in clinical field adaptation.
Conclusion
Intrinsic motivation, self-regulation, and the work department were significant factors affecting the clinical field adaptation of novice nurses. Therefore, these findings suggest that to facilitate the smooth clinical field adaptation of novice nurses, it is necessary to enhance their self-regulation and intrinsic motivation, while also considering the work department environment.
6.Effects of a Simultaneous Dual-Task Intervention on Cognitive Function in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Objectives:
Previous studies have shown that combined interventions involving cognitive training and physical activity are effective in enhancing brain function. This study examined the effects of a dual-task intervention—simultaneously combining cognitive and physical tasks—on the cognitive and physical function of community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and older.
Methods:
From July to December 2023, cognitively normal adults aged 65 years or older were recruited through the Jeollabuk-do Regional Dementia Center. Participants completed an eightsession group-based program (60 minutes per session) that combined cognitive training and physical activity. The cognitive functions were evaluated using a neuropsychological test battery, and the physical functions were assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), before and after the intervention.
Results:
Of 79 participants, 73 completed the intervention. After the program, significant improvements in orientation, memory, visuoconstruction, naming, total cognitive scores, and performance were observed on the Trail Making Test-Part A and Trail Making Test-Part B (p<0.05 to p<0.001).Physical performance also significantly improved the balance, gait speed, chair-stand ability, and total SPPB scores (p<0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that lower educational attainment and cohabitation with children were associated with greater cognitive improvements, while antihypertensive medication use was negatively associated, and diabetes medication use was positively associated with cognitive outcomes.
Conclusion
Simultaneous dual-task–based combined intervention may be an effective strategy for enhancing the cognitive and physical functions in cognitively preserved older adults. Nevertheless, further studies will be needed to explore its long-term effects and underlying neurobiological mechanisms.
7.Evaluation of feasibility and clinical outcomes of robot-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy after neoadjuvant treatment for patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: a retrospective propensity score-matched cohort study

Purpose:
With neoadjuvant treatment (NAT) broadening the surgical indication for advanced pancreatic cancer, the growing use of robotic platforms in pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) necessitates the evaluation of its feasibility in advanced pancreatic cancer patients who have undergone NAT.
Methods:
We compared clinicopathological outcomes of advanced pancreatic cancer patients who received either robotassisted or open PD after NAT at a tertiary hospital from 2015 to 2023. Propensity score matching was performed based on age, sex, and TNM staging.
Results:
Among 223 patients who received conversion surgery after NAT, 42 open PD and 14 robot-assisted PD patients were matched in a 3:1 ratio. There was a trend of shorter hospital stays (11.4 days vs. 9.8 days, P = 0.218) and less severe postoperative complications (21.4% vs. 7.1%; P = 0.227) in the robot-assisted PD group. Lymph node (LN) yield, LN metastasis rate, and R0 resection rates were similar between the 2 groups. The overall (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) rates between the 2 groups were comparable (5-year OS rate: 55.7% vs. 72.7%, P = 0.264; 5-year DFS rate: 54.4% vs.58.4%, P = 0.759).
Conclusion
Robot-assisted PD offers comparable short-term and long-term outcomes to open PD, even in patients undergoing conversion surgery after NAT.
8.Potential Unnecessity of Bismuth in Standard Triple Therapy for Clarithromycin-Susceptible Helicobacter pylori Infection

Objectives:
The standard first-line treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection typically involves proton pump inhibitors, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin (PAC), yet the eradication success rates are not entirely satisfactory. Recognizing bismuth’s antibacterial properties and its potential to enhance antibiotic efficacy, this study compared the eradication success rates of a 7-day course of PAC with bismuth (PACB) versus PAC alone in patients with clarithromycin-susceptible H. pylori infections.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective review at Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital involving 499 patients with confirmed clarithromycin-susceptible H. pylori infection. These patients were treated either with PACB or PAC for 7 days. Clarithromycin resistance-associated point mutations were evaluated using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Successful eradication was confirmed by a negative 13C-urea breath test.
Results:
Of the patients, 261 received PACB therapy, and 238 received PAC therapy. The intention-to-treat analysis showed eradication success rates of 82.8% (216/261) for PACB and 89.1% (212/238) for PAC (p=0.093). The per-protocol analysis revealed eradication rates of 85.3% (215/252) for PACB and 90.5% (210/232) for PAC (p=0.081). The incidence of adverse effects was similar between the two groups, with 41.3% (104/252) in the PACB group and 34.1% (79/232) in the PAC group (p=0.102).
Conclusions
Adding bismuth to the standard 7-day PAC regimen did not significantly increase eradication rates in patients with clarithromycin-susceptible H. pylori infections compared to PAC alone.
9.Efficacy of Bone Regeneration Cell Therapy Using Mesenchymal Stem Cells Originating from Embryonic Stem Cells in Animal Models; Bone Defects and Osteomyelitis

BACKGROUND:
Bone defects are commonly encountered due to accidents, diseases, or aging, and the demand for effective bone regeneration, particularly for dental implants, is increasing in our aging society. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are promising candidates for regenerative therapies; however, obtaining sufficient quantities of these cells for clinical applications remains challenging. DW-MSCs, derived from embryonic stem cells and developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical, exhibit a robust proliferative capacity even after extensive culture.
METHODS:
This study explores the therapeutic potential of DW-MSCs in various animal models of bone defects. DWMSCs were expanded for over 13 passages for in vivo use in rat and canine models of bone defects and osteomyelitis. The research focused on the in vivo osteogenic differentiation of DW-MSCs, the establishment of a fibrin-based system for bone regeneration, the assessment of bone repair following treatment in animal models, and comparisons with commercially available bone grafts.
RESULTS:
Results showed that DW-MSCs exhibited superior osteogenic differentiation compared to other materials, and the fibrinization process not only preserved but enhanced their proliferation and differentiation capabilities through a 3D culture effect. In both bone defect models, DW-MSCs facilitated significant bone regeneration, reduced inflammatory responses in osteomyelitis, and achieved effective bone healing. The therapeutic outcomes of DW-MSCs were comparable to those of commercial bone grafts but demonstrated qualitatively superior bone tissue restructuring.
CONCLUSION
Our findings suggest that DW-MSCs offer a promising approach for bone regeneration therapies due to their high efficacy and anti-inflammatory properties.
