PURPOSE: The study was done to investigate the effect of ethanol inhalation on postoperative nausea in patients using Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA). METHODS: The data were collected from June 1st 2006 to September 30th, 2007. The subjects were 70 patients who had had orthopedic surgery under general anesthesia. The levels of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to measure postoperative nausea. The experimental group was given ethanol inhalation using ethanol pads and the control group received normal saline pads. All participants were instructed to take two deep sniffs with the pad one inch from the nose. This was repeated every five minutes for three doses. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. RESULTS: The study supported all hypotheses. "The experimental group given first dose of ethanol inhalation would have a lower level postoperative nausea compared to the control group"(t = -5.900, p = .000). "The experimental group given second doses of ethanol inhalation would have a lower level postoperative nausea compared to the control group"(t = -7.507, p = .000). "The experimental group given third doses of ethanol inhalation would have a lower level postoperative nausea compared to the control group"(t = -6.685, p = .000). CONCLUSION: According to these results, the ethanol inhalation can be considered an effective nursing intervention for relieving the postoperative nausea in patients using PCA.

The chondrogenic potential of free autogenous periosteal grafts for osteochondral defects was investigated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yonsei University, Wonju College of Medicine. Five millimeter diameter of circular full-thickness defects were made in patellar groove of both femur in 64 adolescent rabbits and the rectangular periostei, prepared from the proximal tibiae, were placed over the defects of patellar groove and sutured(cambium layer, facing joint surface) and the rabbits were allowed to move actively. A serial gross and histologic examinations of neochondrogenesis were done during 8 weeks. The results were as follows. l. At 2 weeks after operation, neochondrogenesis was hardly seen either in the graft group or in the control group. The defects were partially filled with some fibrous tissue. 2. After 6 weeks of operation, all defects in the graft group(postop 6 weeks and 8 weeks) were filled with hyaline cartilage cells but only 38% (postop 6 weeks) and 44% (postop 8 weeks) of the control group were filled with hyaline cartilage cells. 3. The cartilages, formed at 6 and 8 weeks, were more mature and better than those formed at 4 weeks. 4. The newly formed hyaline cartilage of the graft group filled the defect earlier and were better than those of the control group. 5. The chondrocytes in the newly formed tissue were originated from the cambium layer of periosteal grafts. 6. Free autogenous periosteal grafts can repair a full-thickness defect in a joint surface by producing tissue that resembles articular cartilage grossly and histologically.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effect of spouses participating in health coaching on stage of the change, health behaviors, and physiological indicators among male office workers with cardiocerebrovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and compare the findings with trainers who provided health coaching only to workers.METHODS: A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was used. Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants from a manufacturing research and development company in the city of Gyeonggi province. The health coaching program for the experimental group (n=26) included individual counseling sessions according to workers' stage of change, and provision of customized health information materials on CVD prevention to workers and their spouses for 12 weeks through mobile phone and email.RESULTS: After 12 weeks of intervention, the total score for health behavior, and scores on the sub-areas of exercise and health checkups significantly improved in the experimental group, but there were no significant differences in the scores of stage of the change and physical indicators. The results of a paired t-test showed a significant decrease in the body mass index, abdominal circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglyceride values, and a significant increase in the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol value in the experimental group after the intervention.CONCLUSION: To improve the health of male workers with CVD risk factors in the workplace, sharing health information with their spouses has proven to be more effective than health coaching for only workers. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies to encourage spousal participation when planning workplace health education for changing health-related behaviors.

Background: This study aimed to examine the caregiver burden in families who took care of adult burn survivors and to explore various risk factors to impact family caregiver burden. Methods: Data were collected from November 2021 to February 2022 through an online survey and study participants were 92 caregivers of adult burn survivors aged 19 years or over. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and hierarchical multiple regressions were used for data analyses. Results: Study participants showed medium levels of psychosocial characteristics including depressive symptoms, psychological wellbeing post-traumatic changes, and social support along with family caregiver burden.Hierarchical multiple regression results showed that sex (B=-0.34, P<0.05), marital status (B=0.38, P<0.05), depressive symptoms (B=0.53, P<0.001), and social support (B=-0.21, P<0.05) were the major factors to impact family caregiver burden. In other words, being female, being married, having high depressive symptoms, or having low social support contributed to increasing the level of caregiver burden. Conclusions Based on the study findings, we discussed practical intervention measures for reducing the burden of family caregivers of burn survivors.

PURPOSE: Stomach cancer is a major cancer in the world as well as in Korea. Helicobacter pylori infection was suggested causing atropic gastritis, but there has been a debate on the association with the gastric adenocarcinoma. We reviewed recent literatures and meta-analyses on the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and the development of gastric adenocarcinoma. PESULTS: The animal experiments suggested that Helicobacter pylori is a causative agent of gastric adenocarcinoma. Meta-analyses on the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric adenocarcinoma showed increased risk in infected person, but the strength of association was varied with study design, characteristics of study participants and the nature of tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Recent study results suggested that Helicobacter pylori is a necessary causative agent for development of gastric adenocarcinoma. Assessment of the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and other factors related with gastric cancer risks and the effects of the eradication therapy of Helicobacter pylori infection on the prevention of gastvic cancer need further evaluation.

In this report, we describe ovarian mixed germ cell tumor in a patient with Turner syndrome. Right ovary was replaced by a 15 x 11 x 10cm teratomatous benign tissue and small area of mixed malignant germ cell tissue. The malignant germ cell portion was composed of embryonal carcinoma and loose reticular area of yolk sac tumor and syncytiotrophoblastic giant cells. Left ovary was streak gonad. This is the first reported case of mixed germ cell tumor with Turner syndrome in Korea.
