2.The Effect of Ethanol Inhalation on Postoperative Nausea in Patients using Patient Controlled Analgesia.

PURPOSE: The study was done to investigate the effect of ethanol inhalation on postoperative nausea in patients using Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA). METHODS: The data were collected from June 1st 2006 to September 30th, 2007. The subjects were 70 patients who had had orthopedic surgery under general anesthesia. The levels of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to measure postoperative nausea. The experimental group was given ethanol inhalation using ethanol pads and the control group received normal saline pads. All participants were instructed to take two deep sniffs with the pad one inch from the nose. This was repeated every five minutes for three doses. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. RESULTS: The study supported all hypotheses. "The experimental group given first dose of ethanol inhalation would have a lower level postoperative nausea compared to the control group"(t = -5.900, p = .000). "The experimental group given second doses of ethanol inhalation would have a lower level postoperative nausea compared to the control group"(t = -7.507, p = .000). "The experimental group given third doses of ethanol inhalation would have a lower level postoperative nausea compared to the control group"(t = -6.685, p = .000). CONCLUSION: According to these results, the ethanol inhalation can be considered an effective nursing intervention for relieving the postoperative nausea in patients using PCA.

5.Factors Affecting the Perception, Knowledge, and Preventive Behaviors of Chronic Pulmonary Disease Patients on Particulate Matter

Objectives:
This research aimed to identify the level of perception, knowledge, preventive behavior, and factors affecting preventive behavior of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease against particulate matter.
Methods:
This research was a descriptive survey research, and the subjects were chronic pulmonary disease patients over the age of 19 and under 80 who visited a university hospital in Daegu City. Data was collected by convenience sampling through structured self-administered questionnaire survey from December 2019 to January 2020, and a total of 212 copies were used for analysis.
Results:
Out of 212 total subjects, 112 were asthma patients (52.8%) and 100 were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients (47.2%). The average score (out of 10) of perception, knowledge and preventive behavior of patients with asthma for particulate matter was 7.92, 6.99, and 7.10, respectively, while those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease scored 7.72, 6.24, and 6.80, respectively. The knowledge score was significantly higher in patients with asthma than those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (p=0.007). Factors affecting particulate matter preventive behavior were perception score, knowledge score, and age for asthma patients, and perception score for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.
Conclusions
As a result of the above, the factors relate to the preventive behavior of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were perception score, knowledge score, and age for asthma, and perception score for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Raising the level of particulate matter preventive behavior can prevent the deterioration of chronic pulmonary diseases caused by particulate matter, so the development of arbitration programs considering the characteristics of the patients according to the disease and continuous and repetitive education are required.
6.An Experimental Study on Neochondrogenesis in Full Thickness Defect of Articular Cartilage Using Autogenous Periosteal Graft

The chondrogenic potential of free autogenous periosteal grafts for osteochondral defects was investigated at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yonsei University, Wonju College of Medicine. Five millimeter diameter of circular full-thickness defects were made in patellar groove of both femur in 64 adolescent rabbits and the rectangular periostei, prepared from the proximal tibiae, were placed over the defects of patellar groove and sutured(cambium layer, facing joint surface) and the rabbits were allowed to move actively. A serial gross and histologic examinations of neochondrogenesis were done during 8 weeks. The results were as follows. l. At 2 weeks after operation, neochondrogenesis was hardly seen either in the graft group or in the control group. The defects were partially filled with some fibrous tissue. 2. After 6 weeks of operation, all defects in the graft group(postop 6 weeks and 8 weeks) were filled with hyaline cartilage cells but only 38% (postop 6 weeks) and 44% (postop 8 weeks) of the control group were filled with hyaline cartilage cells. 3. The cartilages, formed at 6 and 8 weeks, were more mature and better than those formed at 4 weeks. 4. The newly formed hyaline cartilage of the graft group filled the defect earlier and were better than those of the control group. 5. The chondrocytes in the newly formed tissue were originated from the cambium layer of periosteal grafts. 6. Free autogenous periosteal grafts can repair a full-thickness defect in a joint surface by producing tissue that resembles articular cartilage grossly and histologically.

7.Needs Assesment of Potential Users for Tele-health Surveillance System.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to assess the potential users' needs for a tele-health surveillance system and to develop a program that reflects the clients' needs. METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted using interviews with a questionnaire during home visitations. Four hundred subjects from residences two affluent areas of Korea were selected by convenience sampling. RESULTS: Through the tele-health surveillance system, they wanted to manage diseases such as heart disease(23.0%), cancers(20.5%) and endocrine diseases(17.5%). The highest score for areas of the tele-health surveillance system was cancer screening. The most highly preferred reporting system was immediate reporting of the screening results by a personal digital assistant with a tailored health management system that reflects their own bio-signals. CONCLUSION: Potential users want to manage their health in disease prevention and health promotion as well as treating diseases. These aspects should be considered in the development and utilization of a tele-health surveillance system.

8.Dysphagia Only with Unilateral Multiple Ulcerative Lesions in Varicella-Zoster Virus Infection: A Case Report

Pharyngeal dysphagia can be caused by structural abnormalities or neurological disorders such as stroke, meningitis, and other conditions. Herpes zoster (HZ), caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), is a rare cause of pharyngeal dysphagia. The symptoms of HZ usually involve a painful rash with vesicles along the dermatome area, but it can also affect the cranial nerves (CN), such as CN VII (Ramsay-Hunt syndrome), and less commonly, other CN. A 69-year-old man presented with a sore throat and dysphagia symptoms. A laryngoscopy revealed multiple ulcerative mucosal lesions on the right soft palate and lateral pharynx. The patient was treated with oral valacyclovir, and although the lesions disappeared, the dysphagia symptoms remained. While dysphagia associated with a VZV infection is rare, it can occur with the additional symptoms of vocal cord paralysis. This paper reports a rare case of pharyngeal dysphagia caused by a VZV infection, and the patient presented only with the initial symptoms of sore throat and dysphagia without skin lesions or signs of vocal cord paralysis.
