Calcification and ossification of colon cancer is frequently encountered, especially in the mucinous carcinoma. However, cartilage formation or enchondral ossification has rarely been described in human colon cancer. This report describes a case of a 59-year-old man with retroperitoneal metastasis of mucinous adenocarcinoma of colon, which showed a widespread heterotopic ossification through membranous or enchondral ossification. The ossification appeared in apposition to tumor cell nests and in the organized mucin pool. In our knowledge, this is the first case showing enchondral ossification in gastrointestinal carcinoma in Korea.

Journal of Agricultural Medicine & Community Health 2024;49(3):179-193
Objectives:
This study aimed to determine the time-series changes in provincial diabetes management indices using by results of the 2008-2022 Korea Community Health Survey.
Methods:
We collected diabetes diagnosis experience rate, treatment rate for people diagnosed with diabetes, annual screening rate for diabetic eye disease complications, and annual screening rate for diabetic kidney disease complications with age-standardized rates from the Regional Health Statistics. The unit of analysis was the nation and 17 provinces and the time-series trend analysis was performed by joinpoint regression using the Joinpoint Regression Program, and the annual percent change (APC) and average APC (AAPC) were estimated, and statistical significance was tested using 95% confidence interval (CI).
Results:
From 2008-2022, the national AAPC (95% CI) for diabetes diagnosis experience rate steadily increased to 2.77 (2.25-3.27), increasing in all regions, excluding Sejong. The national AAPC for treatment rate for people diagnosed with diabetes was 0.75 (0.47-1.04), with a slight but steady trend toward improvement, excluding Daejeon, Sejong, and Jeonbuk, which showed significant improvement. The national AAPCs for annual screening rates for diabetic eye disease and kidney disease complications were 1.82 (0.99-2.66) and 1.95 (0.60-3. 41), respectively, and the area with the largest change was Sejong.
Conclusions
In Korea, the diabetes management indices tended to increase and improve, but the trends among provinces varied. Therefore, efforts are needed to address regional disparities in diabetes management.

A case of clear cell adenocarcinoma arising in the female urinary bladder, which is accompanied by endometriosis of the urinary bladder and the uterus, is reported. The carcinoma protruded into the vesical lumen as a fungating mass, and had a tubulocyotic pattern. The tumor cell had intracytoplasmic glycogen and electron microscopically short microvilli on their surface, resembling clear cell acenocarcinoma of the female genital tract including ovary. This is the fourth case report of clear cell adenocarcinoma complicating vesical endometriosis, and may support the view that clear cell carcinome arises from endometriosis which, in turn, from the Mullerian remnant.

Clear cell sarcoma is a rare malignant rumor of the kidney which occurs in children and is differentiated from Wilms' tumor by its different clinicopathologic features and natural history. Previous studies indicate that this tumor may be of mesenchymal cell origin; however, this has not been proven conclusively. Further accumulation and study need to be conducted in order to clarify the histogenesis of this tumor. We report two cases of clear cell sarcoma of the kidney which occurred in a 2 and a half-year old and a 2-year old boy. This report places special emphasis on the clinicopathologic characteristics of these two cases including electron microscopic and immunohistochemical findings. Attempts were also made to differentiate the clinicopathologic aspects of clear cell sarcoma from Wilms' tumor and speculate on the histogenesis of this rumor.

Melanosis duodeni is an uncommon pathologic condition characterized by diffuse small black spots on the first and second portions of the duodenum. It occurs predominantly in elderly patients and is linked to chronic renal failure, use of antihypertensive drug and oral iron supplementation, and/or presence of gastric hemorrhage. We report a case of melanosis duodeni in a 60-year-old woman diagnosed with hypertension 20 years ago and chronic renal failure 6 years ago. She has taken antihypertensive drugs for many years. On endoscopy, speckled black pigmentation of duodenal mucosa was detected. Microscopically, this duodenal lesions showed numerous coarse pigments in macrophages confined within the lamina propria. By ultrastructural study, macrophages contained electron-dense granules admixed with lipofuscin-like material in residual bodies.

Korean Journal of Health Promotion 2015;15(1):24-30
BACKGROUND: Lumbar stabilization exercise was used to improve spinal mobilization and stabilization. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of lumbar stabilization exercise programs on shoulder pain and range of motion among a group of elderly individuals. METHODS: The study subjects were 28 elderly patients from C hospital, Gochang, Jeollabukdo. They were randomly divided into 3 groups: lumbar stability exercise group, passive upper arm exercise group, and conservative therapy group. The therapies were conducted for 4 weeks. Shoulder pain and range of motion were measured both before and after therapies. The homogeneity of study subjects was analyzed using the chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests. For the pre-/post-status comparison, the Wilcoxon's signed-ranks tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were conducted. RESULTS: General characteristics including age, sex, and disease history of the 3 groups were comparable. After 4 weeks of exercise, shoulder pain was significantly reduced in the lumbar stability exercise group (6.4+/-2.9 vs. 3.6+/-3.1, P=.026) and range of motion was significantly increased in the same group. More specifically, right flexion (121.1+/-12.0degrees vs. 137.9+/-11.9degrees, P=.008), right abduction (96.6+/-21.8degrees vs. 129.7+/-50.7degrees, P=.008), and left abduction (92.0+/-21.8degrees vs. 110.3+/-21.2degrees, P=.038) increased significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Shoulder pain and range of motion improved significantly in the lumbar stability exercise group. Further study is needed to look into the longer effects of this exercise program using more subjects.
