2.Helicobacter pylori Infection in Children with Recurrent Abdominal Pain.
Korean Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition 2005;8(1):1-11
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between H. pylori infection and recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) in children and to evaluate the effects of eradication therapy on RAP. METHODS: From January 1998 to January 2005, 166 children with RAP (61 male, 105 female) aged 10.0+/-3.3 years were included. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopies were performed for all the patients. All H. pylori infected children (n=70) received the eradication therapy and were divided into two groups: Group Ia (n=52); eradicated, Group Ib (n=18); non-eradicated. H. pylori-negative children (n=96) were divided into three groups according to the medication: Group IIa (n=67); no medication, Group IIb (n=13); acid-suppressant, Group IIc (n=16); both acid-suppressant and antibiotics. Questionnaire for symptoms were asked at the first, 6th, 12th, 24th, and 36th months following the treatment (grade 0; completely resolved, grade 1; definitely improved, but there are occasional episodes of mild abdominal pain, grade 2; no change in the frequency and intensity of abdominal pain). RESULTS: In about 90% of H. pylori positive children, RAP improved in the both H. pylori-eradicated and non-eradicated children in a follow-up survey. In about 75% of H. pylori-negative children, RAP also improved among in the three groups of patients regardless of medication. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that there was no correlations between improvement of RAP and eradication of H. pylori, and between improvement of RAP and medication. Consequently the reassurance that the children with RAP have no serious organic cause was important to improvement of RAP.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1999;37(5):620-623
Lanolin is a complex material consisting of a mixture of numerous esters and polyesters of high-moleculer-weight alcohols and fatty acids, Lanolin allergy is important because lanolin is widely used as an emulsifier in topical medicaments and in numerous cosmetic preparations. We report a case of allergic contact dermatitis in a 27-year-old female. An erythematous pruritic rash develgood around the eyelid developed after applying a new eye cream and was aggravated after applying Cambison ophthalmic ointment. Patch testing showed positive reactions to Cambison ophthalmic ointment, 30% wool alcohol, Amerchol L101 and Nivea cream. A use test with 100% Cambison ophthalmic ointment base was positive

Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is an important pathogen in the development of localized aggressive periodontitis. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a virulent factor of periodontal pathogens that contributes to alveolar bone loss and connective tissue degradation in periodontal disease. Our present study was designed to investigate the cytokine expression and signaling pathways regulated by A. actinomycetemcomitans LPS (Aa LPS). Cytokine gene expression profiling in RAW 264.7 cells was performed by microarray analyses. The cytokine mRNA and protein levels and related signaling pathways induced by Aa LPS were measured by RT-PCR, ELISA and western blotting. Microarray results showed that Aa LPS strongly induced the expression of NF-kappaB, NF-kappaB-related genes, inflammatory cytokines, TNF-alpha and IL-1beta in RAW 264.7 cells. NF-kappaB inhibitor pretreatment significantly reduced the levels of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta mRNA and protein. In addition, the Aa LPS-induced TNF-alpha and IL-1beta expression was inhibited by p38/JNK MAP kinase inhibitor pretreatment. These results show that Aa LPS stimulates TNF-alpha and IL-1beta expression through NF-kappaB and p38/JNK activation in RAW 264.7 cells, suggesting the essential role of this pathway in the pathogenesis of localized aggressive periodontitis.

OBJECTIVES: Self perceived body image among women is drawing a lot of attention in Korea due to their unhealthy weight control behaviors. To determine the relationship between self-perceived body image and dietary behaviors among Korean women, the discrepancy between actual body size and body image perception, weight control behaviors were assessed based on age groups using the 2010 KNHANES data. METHODS: A total of 1,747 subjects were selected after eliminating those of likely changing their diet recently using the 2010 KNHANES data. The subjects were divided into 3 groups, self-underweight, self-normal, and self-obese according to their perception of body image. The BMI and weight control behaviors were assessed based on age groups according to the body image perception. RESULTS: The younger, the higher ratio of underweight, women perceived their body size as normal or overweight. Exercise and reduced food intakes were dominant among various weight control methods but unhealthy methods were dominant among self perceived overweight group. CONCLUSIONS: Incorrect body image perception and unhealthy weight control behaviors can cause nutritional problems. Nutritional education should emphasize the importance of healthy weight and proper body image perception for Korean women.

Intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia(IPEH) is a solitary slowly enlarging, often tender, blue to red elevated nodule. The predilection sites include the head and neck region, and the extremities, especially the fingers. Histologically, IPEH is characterized by the well-circumscribed intravascular papillary structures, which are formed by fibrous cores that are lined by endothelial cells. We report a case of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia developed on the unusual site of lip.

The Korean Journal of Gastroenterology 2017;69(2):129-134
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is one of critical complications in liver cirrhosis patients with ascites. We aimed to review clinical course of SBP patients in a 10-year period from single center. METHODS: This study enrolled SBP patients between 2005 and 2015. Their medical records were reviewed. The laboratory findings of serum and ascites were examined, and characteristics of isolated microorganisms in ascites were analyzed. RESULTS: Total 51 patients were enrolled. Male patients were predominant (64.7%), and mean age was 59.20 years. The most common etiology of cirrhosis was alcohol (41.2%), followed by hepatitis B (39.2%). Microorganism was isolated from the ascites in 31 patients (60.78%). The proportions of Gram negative and Gram positive were 80.64% and 19.36%. The proportions of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Streptococcus species were 29.41%, 19.61% and 11.76%. Among Escherichia colis, 4 cases were ESBL positive (7.84%). The most commonly used first-line antibiotic was cefotaxime (80.40%). Prophylactic antibiotics treatment was performed only in 8 patients, and SBP was recurred in 7 patients (13.72%). When comparing the SBP recurrence group and the non-recurrence group, there were no significant differences in laboratory findings of serum and ascitic fluid. CONCLUSIONS: SBP is still a critical complication in cirrhosis patients with ascites, and the clinical features of SBP have not been altered much compared with those in 1990's. The effective treatment of SBP is still very important for a better prognosis of cirrhosis patients.

Annals of Dermatology 2011;23(Suppl 1):S84-S87
Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is a rare benign disease that is characterized by an abnormal proliferation of eccrine glands and vascular elements. It is generally congenital, but it can appear before puberty. It usually presents as a single plaque or nodule, but multiple patch-like lesions are also possible. EAH is mostly asymptomatic, but it is sometimes associated with pain or hyperhidrosis. It generally does not require aggressive treatment, but the lesion can be excised due to pain, enlargement and cosmetic reasons. A 3-week-old Korean female presented with a hemorrhagic skin lesion on the right foot since birth. There was no specific birth history. The lesion first appeared on the third toe of the right foot and quickly spread to almost half of the right foot. Histopathology examination revealed acanthosis in the epidermis and a proliferation of eccrine ducts, glands and capillaries. The eccrine glands were immunohistochemically-positive for carcinoembryonic antigen.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 2000;38(7):989-990
Tufted angioma is a benign, slowly progressive angioma with typical histologic findings of small, circumscribed angiomatous tufts and lobules scattered in the dermis. More than 50% of cases occur during the first year of life, but rarely it develops late in life. There was only one reported case of tufted angioma after trauma in the English literature. We report a case of tufted angioma, which developed after electrocautery in a 61-year-old woman showing histologic features of typical tufted angioma.

Korean Journal of Clinical Pharmacy 2023;33(2):97-105
Background:
Dispensing of prescription drugs is the most important task for community pharmacists. However, the public’s satisfaction with pharmacist services is not high, and distrust due to dispensing by unqualified person and/or under unsanitary conditions led to demands for transparent dispensing room (TDR) in pharmacies.
Objective:
This study was conducted to investigate how pharmacy students perceive pharmacists’ credibility and professional ethics in conjunction with the TDR issue.
Methods:
A survey using 20-items questionnaire was conducted from July 12 to 20, 2019 in pharmacy students nationwide.
Results:
Among 218 respondents, 84.1% attended pharmacy school located in the metropolitan area, 61.1% were the 3rd or 4th graders, and 81.2% had no practical training in community pharmacy. 56.2% were unaware of the TDR issue, and 66.8% agreed on the public’s demand for TDR. 68.8% disagreed that TDR was the best way to solve the problem of unqualified dispensing, while 51.9% agreed that TDR was the best way in solving unsanitary dispensing problem. Publics’ confidence level of community pharmacists was mean 5.84 (range 1-10). In a question asking how expertise and professional ethics affect pharmacist confidence, 50% said expertise was more important, 31.7% the same, and 18.3% said professional ethics was more important.
Conclusions
To overcome the demand for TDR which began with public distrust in pharmacists, it is necessary to seek measures to increase the credibility of pharmacists, and as part of this, pharmacist ethics should be systematically educated at pharmacy school.
