PURPOSE: This study was to evaluate the effects of a smoking prevention program among preschool children. METHOD: This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 141 preschool children aged 6 or 7 at two childcare centers in Jecheon City, who were divided into an experimental group (n=66) and a control group (n=75). The smoking prevention program was applied through 9 sessions and 30 minutes per session. Surveys were conducted before and after the smoking prevention program to examine the preschoolers' knowledge and attitude toward smoking and smoking coping behavior. RESULTS: There were significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in smoking knowledge (t=-2.02, p=.044) and smoking coping behavior (t=-2.01, p=.047), but smoking attitude (t=-1.20, p=.230) was not statistically significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: As a result, further research is needed into the long term effects of a smoking prevention program on the future behavior of preschoolers so that the health benefits of early prevention can be quantified. It is necessary for parents to participate actively in influencing preschoolers' attitudes and behaviors with regard to the avoidance of smoking.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a health education program on the health promoting behavior and self-efficacy in university students and evaluate its effects. METHOD: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The subjects were 148 students [experimental(N=80) and control(N=68) groups] from a university in J City. The experimental group members participated in thirteen sessions of a health education program for fifteen weeks and the degree of their health promoting behavior and self efficacy was evaluated. The instruments for this study were the health promoting lifestyle profile developed by Walker et al.(1987) and self-efficacy scale developed by Sherer & Maddux(1982). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, t-tests, and paired t-test using SPSS 10.0. RESULT: The experimental group had a significantly higher health promoting behavior score(F=10.389, p=.002) than the control group, while no significant difference was found in the self-efficacy score(F=.481, p=.489). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the health education program can be utilized as an effective program to promote health promoting behavior in university students.

The authors report the diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) findings of three pediatric patients with gait dysfunction and corticoreticular tract (CRT) disruption. All three patients showed unilateral trunk instability, but they did not show any spasticity or weakness of the distal extremities. Clinical evaluation of trunk instability using a Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS) revealed that the more affected side had a lower score than the contralateral side. DTT showed disrupted CRTs in hemispheres contralateral to the hemiparetic sides, which were associated with unilateral proximal instability, although conventional MRI showed no abnormal lesion explaining the hemiplegic symptom. Compared to the results in age-matched controls, these three patients had decreased values of fractional anisotropy (FA) and tract volumes (TV) of the affected CRTs, and these values were also decreased compared to those in the contralateral side. On the other hand, values of FA and TV of the corticospinal tracts on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides were only marginally different. In conclusion, diffusion tensor imaging can be helpful for investigating the state of the CRT in pediatric patients with trunk instability and gait dysfunction.

Clear cell sarcoma of the tendon and aponeurosis was first described by Enzinger in 1965, and has become a well-accepted clinicopathological entity as malignant melanoma of soft parts. Although it posesses the ability to produce melanin, it is quite different from conventional melanoma in that, it is more deeply located, usually associated with tendon and aponeurosis, displays pale-staining round to oval-shaped tumor cells and has a longer clinical course and better prognosis.Several cases have been reported in Korea, and we experiened an additional case of this rare tumor that showed ulceration.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a sexual abuse prevention education program for elementary school students. METHODS: Orem's Self-Care Theory (1995) and Seels & Richey's ADDIE model (1994) for developing learning materials were applied to develop this program. RESULTS: The development progress of the program consisted of 5 distinct phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The contents was classified into 6 categories: the definition of sexual abuse, how to deal with sexual abuse, the situational reaction, areas with a high risk for sexual abuse, related organizations, and a wrap-up quiz. The app was easily accessible for elementary school students. CONCLUSION: A sexual abuse prevention program using a hybrid app may be an effective way to reach elementary students, and further research for children of various ages is required.

Microsporum(M.) canis is one of the zoophilic dermatophytes that is most likely transmitted by contact of infected animals. Cats are the principal reservoir for M. canis in Korea although with less frequency this fungus is also common in dogs. M. canis infections were mostly composed of tinea(T.) capitis, T. faciei and T. corporis. Clinical manifestations were single or multiple well-demarcated, annular shaped, erythematous scaly patches. But when the lesions were distorted by treatment, we should differenciate with other skin diseases. A 21 years old woman had multiple crusted, eroded or ulcerated lesions on the arms, trunk that look like ecthyma. And single lesion on the left chest showed scanty scaly lesion. M. canis was caltivated from the ecthyma like lesion and a cat of the patient. We report a patient with T. corporis by M. canis infection occurred to ecthyma like lesion after topical treatment for 3 months.

BACKGROUND: Tinea pedis and onychomycosis is a common disease and the proportion of that in the aged has been significantly increased. Although there have been many reports about tinea pedis and onychomycosis, very few studies about that in the aged have yet been conducted. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and clinical features of tinea pedis and onychomycosis in the aged. METHODS: One hundred twenty-six persons over 65 years old who visited the Daegu public aged welfare center (57 persons), Seongju public health center (38 persons) and hospitalized Yeungnam University Yeongcheon hospital (31 persons) from September 20, 2005 to October 7, 2005 were examined clinically and evaluated tinea pedis and onychomycosis. Their clinical lesions were confirmed by KOH preparation and fungal culture. RESULT: Among 126 examined, 62 persons (49.2%) had tinea pedis and/or onychomycosis. Prevalence of the tinea pedis and/or onychomycosis of male (53.2%) was higher than that of female (38.2%). There was no difference in the prevalence between the living area or age. Most common clinical type of tinea pedis was hyperkeratotic type (n=21/66.7%). All patients with onychomycosis were distal subungual onychomycosis. In this study common underlying disease was hypertension (22.6%), diabetes mellitus (8.1%) and cerebrovascular accident (8.1%), however, there was no correlation between underlying diseases and the prevalence of tinea pedis and/or onychomycosis. Among 87 persons, 21 strains of dermatophytes were isolated. They were 19 strains of Trichophyton(T.) rubrum, 2 strains of T. mentagrophytes. The rate of previous treatment for this problem was 32.6%. CONCLUSIONS: All this finding suggest that the prevalence of tinea pedis and/or onychomycosis in the aged was high and they did not know about the disease. Tinea pedis and/or onychomycosis in the aged could become a source of infection and complication. Therefore, it is necessary to educate them and support to treat the disease effectively. Future studies including a large number of examinee and correlation of other diseases will be needed.

Syringocystadenocarcinoma papilliferum (SCACP) is a rare form of adenocarcinoma of the skin. This is the malignant counterpart of syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) and usually develops on the scalp in a long-standing lesion identified clinically as SCAP. We describe a 65-yr-old Korean man with a nodule on the right supra-pubic area with a 2-yr duration. Histologically this tumor had a similar overall configuration as in SCAP, but the tumor was asymmetric and poorly circumscribed, extending into the deep dermis and showed cytologic atypia. The tumor cells showed positive reaction to GCDFP-15, but negative reaction to CEA and HMFG-1. We established the diagnosis of SCACP in the patient, and a wide excision was performed to remove the tumor. The patient has been well without relapse or metastasis for 2 yr.

Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma is a rare cutaneous hamartoma comprising follicular, sebaceous, and mesenchymal elements. This tumor usually presents during adulthood as an exophytic papule or nodule on the scalp or central area of the face. Histopathologic features are central cystic structures lined with infundibular epithelium, numerous sebaceous gland lobules radiating from cystic structures, and surrounding stroma composed of fibrillary bundles of collagen, small vessels, neural tissue and occasionally mucin deposits. We herein report a case of folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma in a 21-year-old man who presented with a skin-colored, dome-shaped papule on the scalp.
