PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate nursing students' knowledge and beliefs about Kangaroo care (KC). METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. Undergraduate students enrolled in departments of nursing (n=322) from three universities in D city participated. Knowledge and beliefs about KC were measured using the Kangaroo Care Questionnaire (KCQ). RESULTS: The overall level of nursing students' knowledge about KC was very low with a mean score of 6.9 out of 17. The mean score for nursing students' beliefs about KC was 87.4 out of 100, indicating relatively positive beliefs. The students who had both education and exposure to KC had higher scores for knowledge and more positive beliefs about KC compared to students with no experience or exposure to KC. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and beliefs about KC (r=.371, p<.001). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that there is a need to develop educational programs for nursing students in order to increase their knowledge and develop positive beliefs about KC.

Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease 2002;12(2):160-165
Primary bronchial neoplasms in children, especially malignant lesions, are extremely rare. We report a case of a 10-year old boy with intermediate-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the right intermediate bronchus, presenting as collapse and bronchiectasis after pneumonia. He was diagnosed by bronchoscopic biopsy. The lobectomy was performed. The patient is in good condition 1 year after operation. All reported cases of bronchial mucoepidermoid tumors in children had histologically low or intermediate grade(well differentiated) variety with a benign clinical course. The optimal surgical therapy for bronchial mucoepidermoid tumors is identical. There must be total removal of either mass with the sacrifice of as little normal lung as possible.

Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing 2007;18(2):284-292
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore and understanding the nature of the shift workers' experience in industries requiring 24 hours-a-day service provision and support. For the purpose, the present researcher made a research question, "What are workers' experience in the shift work?" METHODS: In the study, 5 male shift workers, 3 female shift worker and a woman (key informant) whose husband is a shift worker participated. Then profound interviews with the participants were made after their agreement. RESULTS: The researcher classified the significant statements under 6 theme clusters, 1) sense of difference; 2) worries about health; 3) draining of emotion; 4) anxiety; 5) sadness; and 6) being comfortable. CONCLUSIONS: Shift work which is inevitable in modern society may have severe influences on shift workers' physical, mental and psychological aspects by causing their work cycle rhythm to be unbalanced. Finally, the researcher hopes that the results of the study would help understand workers' life and increase social concern and support to the workers.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2007;37(6):924-931
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the essence of the experiences of patients in an ICU, and to understand them from the patients' point of view. METHODS: Participants in this study were six patients in P hospital. Data collection consisted of in-depth interviews and an observation method done from January to April in 2005. The method was analysis using the phenomenological method proposed by Colaizzi(1978). RESULTS: The themes were classified into eight theme clusters. The eight theme clusters were finally grouped into four categories, 'shock', 'pain', 'gratefulness' and 'pleasure of revival'. CONCLUSION: The ICU patients had negative experiences in physical.mental critical situations, but also positive experiences in consolation and nurses and families' encouragement. Therefore, ICU nurses must support patients and their families to minimize the negative experiences and maximize the positive experiences.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2007;37(3):381-390
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of mental health hospital workers. METHODS: Participants in the study were a total of 8 mental health hospital workers who consisted of nurses, social welfare workers and health managers. To prevent them from being omitted, the interviews were all recorded under the participants prior agreement. The method was analysis using the phenomenological method proposed by Colaizzi(1978). RESULTS: The experiences of the participants of this study were classified into 15 significant areas, from which 10 subjects hard work, conflicts, heavy feeling, irritability, getting familiar, changes of recognition, aptitude determination, feeling of achievement and sense of pride were drawn out. These subjects were then grouped into 5 themes. These five themes were finally grouped into 5 categories, negative emotion, depressive emotion, changes of thinking, delight and value discovery. CONCLUSIONS: The study tried to analyze the experiences of key informants like nurses, social welfare workers and health managers all of whom were serving at mental health hospitals, contribute to social recognition about the special medical establishment, promote qualitative mental health nursing and further provide educational information necessary for understanding mental health hospital workers.

Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition 2013;16(1):49-52
Antral web is a rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction in neonate. It is a 2-4 mm thin mucous membrane that can be found anywhere from 1 to 7 cm proximal to the pylorus. The baby was born at gestational age of 32(+1) weeks with 1,880 g as 2nd baby of dizygotic twin. After birth, the baby had constant non-bilious vomiting without feeding while he didn't show abdominal distension or discoloration. The infantogram showed distended stomach with distal small bowel gas. Upper gastrointestinal series revealed that the antrum was abruptly narrowed at 1 cm proximal to pylorus. We performed laparotomy at the 10th day after birth and excised the 2 mm-thick web circumferentially. He began milk feeding after 6 days and discharged uneventfully at postoperative 35 days with corrected age of 38(+4) weeks with body weight 2,420 g. The antral web should be considered in the case of non-bilious vomiting in neonate.

Journal of the Korean Association of Pediatric Surgeons 2008;14(1):21-26
There is significant morbidity and mortality associated with the combination of esophageal atresia (EA) and duodenal atresia (DA). Nevertheless, the management protocol for the combined anomalies is not well defined. The aim of this study is to review our experience with the combined anomalies of EA and DA. From May 1989 to August 2006, seven neonates were diagnosed as EA with DA at Asan Medical Center. In all cases, the type of EA was proximal EA and distal tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). The diagnosis of DA was made in theprenatal period in 1, at birth in 4, 4 days after birth in 1 (2 days after EA repair) and at postmortem autopsy in 1. Except the one case where DA was missed initially, primary simultaneous repair was attempted. DA repair with gastrostomy followed by EA repair in 2, EA repair followed by DA repair without gastrostomy in 2, and TEF ligation followed by DA repair with gastrostomy in 1. There were two deaths. One baby had a large posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia, and operative repair was not attempted. The other infant who had a TEF ligation and DA repair with gastrostomy expired from cardiac failure due to a large patent ductus arteriosus. Simultaneous repair of EA and DA appears to be an acceptable management approach for the combined anomalies, but more experience would be required for the selection of the primary repair of both anomalies.

Journal of the Korean Neurological Association 2004;22(4):396-398
Tumarkin's otolithic crisis refers to drop attacks of vestibular origins. It usually occurs without warning in patients with late or end-stage endolymphatic hydrops. However, drop attacks of vestibular origins may occur in patients without otologic deficit. We report a patient with Tumarkin's otolithic crisis from delayed endolymphatic hydrops. The careful delineation of drop attacks in patients with vertigo can provide appropriate therapeutic options for patients with this potentially dangerous condition.

Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects about 1/2,000-1/5,000 females born. The typical female with Turner syndrome has only one X chromosome in each of her cells. There are several variations on this theme as other similar chromosome anomalies occur in females with Turner syndrome. We observed a patient with short stature, abscent vagina and chromosomal abnormality. Chromosomal analysis of the patient showed 45,X/46,X, +mar. The marker chromosome was revealed as X chromosome in fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). We report a case of mos 45,X/46,X,+mar.ish der(X)(wcp X+) in Turner syndrome with a brief review of literature.

Comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) has been used to identify deletions and amplifications, particularly in neoplastic samples. CGH provides a new possibility searching genomes for imbalances of genetic material. We described the combined use of CGH and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to identify the origin of a marker chromosome in a child with mental retardation. Giemsa banding of metaphases from cultured lymphocytes showed a marker chromosome. The Karyotype was 47,XX,+mar. CGH revealed that the additional material originated from 15q. FISH confirmed this finding with whole chromosome paint for chromosome 15 and with a D15S10 (15q11-13) probe. This case demonstrates the efficient use of CGH and confirmatory FISH for the identification of chromosomal material of unknown origin.
